Review In People

Here is a review of “Hours…” from the October 11th People Magazine.

Hours?
David Bowie (Virgin)

During his 52 years, Bowie has been known to take a misstep or two. He once starred in a mime troupe, and his 1987 Glass Spiders tour was a tangled mess. So it seems highly probable, then, that this techno-tinged album would turn out to be another sad attempt by an aging rocker to be trendy.

Surprise: Rather than dabbling in the esoteric of pop’s outer electronic edge, Bowie surfs it with aplomb. Where others toy awkwardly with studio effects, Bowie marshals them in service of a new batch of winning songs, including standouts like “Survive” and “The Pretty Things are Going to Hell,” that will shine among his trove of rock classics. ? Bottom Line: Rock’s king of cool adds to his luster.

David Bowie Hosts Exclusive E-xhibit Of Sensation, The Controversial Showing At The Brooklyn Museum Of Art

Virtual Art Tour, Made Available by UltraStar Internet Services, Unveils at www.davidbowie.com, Simultaneous to Museum Opening, SATURDAY, October 2

NEW YORK, NY ? On yet another revolutionary journey, world-renowned musician, performer, artist and songwriter, David Bowie re-invents himself again as the master of ceremony for the exclusive virtual opening of the controversial art exhibit, “Sensation: Young British Artists From The Saatchi Collection.” Hosted on Bowie’s personal web site and ISP ? www.davidbowie.com ? this online premiere opens in conjunction with its real world display at The Brooklyn Museum of Art, SATURDAY, October 2, 1999. (BowieNet members will get a 12-hour advance preview of the online viewing.) The official guide of this headlining exhibit, Bowie provides Real Audio commentary on the pieces in the collection for both the Internet and museum visitors.

“Sensation represents some of the best, worst but definitely most extreme of the high profile work to have come out of Britain in the last ten years or so,” commented David Bowie. Bowie predicted in his private journal published on BowieNet (October 1998) that Chris Ofili was to be one of the UK’s most acclaimed young artists and the sure winner of the prestigious Turner Prize. He continued, “the work by Chris Ofili and the others is probably the most important showing since the Armory Show at the opening of this century. It’s definitely going to be as talked about.”

The Internet opening of “Sensation” is made available by the pioneering entertainment Internet Company, UltraStar Internet Services LLC. Founded in conjunction with Bowie himself, UltraStar acquired the rights to this virtual art exhibit this summer. Bowie also contributed to the U.S. opening of “Sensation” as an official sponsor of the exhibit.

This first-ever Internet display of “Sensation” offers a worldwide audience an insider’s view of this talked-about exhibit. All 141 pieces will be on virtual display, complete with artist biographies/photos and David Bowie’s descriptions of many pieces under scrutiny. Maximizing the interactive capabilities of the World Wide Web, “Sensation” online invites exhibit patrons the exclusive opportunity to chat openly with other art lovers and artists about the meaning and controversy surrounding this collection of work.
