How Bowie Inspired Radio One Dj

I was the cosmic kid in full costume dress*…

Radio 1‘s very own Gilbert and George, the inimitable Mark and Lard, are the subject of a rather groovy six-page feature in the current edition of Later magazine (February 2001). The controversial duo, considered loose cannons in some quarters, offer up their own version of recent pop history best summed up in this opening paragraph:

“Within ten minutes of meeting Mark Radcliffe and Marc ‘Lard’ Riley, they claim to have invented Merseybeat, house music and UK garage. They also insist Eminem owes most of his success to them, and that the lead singer of Limp Bizkit was once their coalman. It’s a meandering tirade of untruths, delivered with an earnest conviction. For quite some time, they cling doggedly to their fantasy world, refusing to be dragged into reality by journalistic probings.”

Despite the claims above that Mark and Lard aren’t 100% honest, the duo have the fastest-growing audience on Radio 1, and I’m sure their listening figures are done no harm by their refreshing frankness, summed up by the fact that they often describe play-listed records as “crap”. Their recently published Records Of The Week-2000 (which contains no less than three Grandaddy singles!) is further testament to their individuality.

Go here for a description of how David Bowie played a part in Lard’s early development, but parents please be warned that the description of Lard’s…erm…undercarriage, is frighteningly graphic. If you preferred the censored sleeves of Diamond Dogs and Tin Machine II, then I suggest you don’t click-through.

* I know it’s a Bruce Springsteen lyric, but Bowie did cover it, and that counts in my book, so there! };-)

2001 : Rendezvous In Space

Under the headline SPACE ODDITIES, The Sunday Times, culture section, reports on a new show for 2001, created by Jean Michel Jarre and Arthur C. Clarke. The multi media, multi cultural £3 million project was performed for the first time on 01/01/01 for 20,000 revellers on Japan’s Okinawa beach.

Jarre filmed Arthur C Clarke at his home in Sri Lanka, answering questions about social life in space, relationships with aliens, the effects of zero gravity and others, and beamed the responses onto his trademark giant projection screens to provide the links between the songs.

Jarre joined forces with TK, a superstar Japanese musician, and Britain’s Mark Fisher, the set designer of Pink Floyd’s The Wall, establishing an “inchoate creative partnership” called The ViZitors.

Fisher said “This is a creative endeavour by four separate cultures to present one popular artistic event. I think that’s a pretty good symbol for the way things should be moving in the world.”

It seems that the production of the show has set Jarre thinking about the possibilities of music in space. “A gig on the moon? That could be a good plan for the future” he said, delighted at the suggestion.

Go here for more. (Imagine the year 2022. A 50th anniversary celebration, featuring a selection of David Bowie’s space related music, performed by Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders on Mars.)

Bowienet Messageboards To Be Cleaned

The results from last week’s poll are in – It seems that the majority of BowieNutters want to clear the boards up until one month ago and start anew, in the spirit of the new millennium. So, that is what we shall do! The boards prior to December 2000 will be cleared over the weekend to make way for fresh new Millennium Posting! Let the games begin!

Blood And Glitter…the Winners

The former Priscilla White, (with a hint of Schwarzkopf Ziggy Red perhaps?) re-enacts the front cover of Ziggy Stardust (sort of) outside the ‘Blood and Glitter’ launch party last night. Picture by Total Blam Blam.

Black Country Rock*

Don’t think we had a wrong answer on this one. But I guess it was pretty easy wasn’t it. We asked you ( 04/02/01 NEWS: WIN A SIGNED COPY OF BLOOD AND GLITTER ) to tell us when and where the shot of a young Ziggy we posted was taken, and what significance the photograph had? The answer being that the picture was taken backstage, before a show at Birmingham Town Hall, in February 1972 and it was the first or second frame Mick ever shot of David.

We also asked you the name of the first band that Mick Rock photographed, and in which year the session took place? To which you all correctly answered, The Pretty Things in 1969. Well done to the ten winners who were picked by TRS. Go here to see if you are one of them.

By the time you read this Mick will no doubt be suffering from RSI of the wrist (no, don’t be rude), from signing many thousands of books at Tower Records in London. If you didn’t make it along, then you still have a chance to get a scribble in your copy of ‘Blood and Glitter’ if you pop along to the Oxford Street branch of Borders in London at 6:30pm (GMT) tomorrow (Friday 6th April) where Mick will probably be using his other hand.

As you can’t have failed to notice, today is the official opening of the ‘Blood and Glitter’ exhibition at the Proud Galleries, 5 Buckingham Street, London WC2N 6BP. The exhibition runs for a month until May 6th (open daily between 10:00am and 7:00pm) and any one of approximately two million people at last night’s preview will tell you how good the exhibition is, not least of all Cilla Black (above) who was reportedly blown away by the great big Bowie pictured with Mick Rock, below.

*Get it? Mick Rock picture taken in Birmingham? Black Country Rock? Oh, don’t worry…

Bowie Dominates Virgin All Time Top 500

Locator for the Virgin King…

Virgin Radio published their annual New Year chart a few days ago, and David Bowie came out as a clear favourite with Virgin listeners who voted an incredible eighteen Bowie compositions into the all time Top 500. This made Bowie the most popular solo artist by a long chalk (whatever that means), and only The Beatles had more entries with twenty one places, but then again, there were four of them chipping in, well two and a half then. };-)

Go here for more, and a list of the Bowie songs that made it in.

A Good Year For The Poses

If I’m Dreaming My Life…

Finally received my copy of BowieNetter Alex Alexander’s third labour of love that is the 68-page ‘A Year In The Life’, the year being 2000 of course. Alex’s previous two efforts covering the ‘Outside’ and ‘hours…’ tours in extraordinary detail have all gone, but if you’re quick you may still be able to get one of these signed and numbered editions that are limited to 100 copies.

While the quality of reproduction is not always great, many of the 100 plus pictures are allegedly unpublished, excepting those taken by me and nicked from this site I presume. Despite claims elsewhere, the volume is photocopied in black and white throughout, aside from the four colour pages that make up the card cover. Quality aside, ‘A Year In The Life’ is a great record of David Bowie’s Y2K via press cuttings, reproductions of tickets and passes, reviews and photographs supplied by fans, including one of Master Duncan Jones and yours truly.

Other ‘treats’ include a free official Rockstyle postcard and a very, very silly paper Bowie Doll supplement, that is frankly rubbish and must have been made by Alex’s four-year-old-niece, sort of fun all the same. If your tempted to part with your hard-earned, contact Alex at alex@davidbowie.com.
