Mojo Remembers The Image

David Bowie in ‘The Image’. Determined to the last.

I’m deranged…

The Enlightenment section of the October edition of MOJO magazine answers a reader’s enquiry regarding the existence of a film called ‘The Image’. Lifting their info from Ken Pitt’s ‘The Pitt Report’, reader M Fox of Doncaster and the magazine’s very own Fred Dellar describe the trauma that a 20-year-old David Bowie had to endure in the making of this classic piece of black and white celluloid history. But first ‘the plot’….

‘The Image’ is a fourteen minute short about an artist (Michael Byrne) who is haunted by ‘The Boy’ (played by Bowie), who is also the subject of the artist’s painting…even if the actual painting does look more like Iggy Pop than David Bowie. Judge for yourself…the painting was used on the cover of the aforementioned ‘The Pitt Report’, below.

Ken Pitt’s ‘David Bowie – The Pitt report.’

The dialogue-less story revolves around the artist trying to despatch the boy by clumping him around the skull with a statuette, giving him a sound beating, and stabbing him. The hapless painter obviously considers the young man a bit of a nuisance, particularly as the boy bounces back from each attempt on his life in the best tradition of later Hollywood films such as ‘Fatal Attraction’.

Filmed during September 1967, in a derelict house near London’s Paddington, the film required David to stand on a window ledge while buckets of water were thrown over him to simulate rain. Fred Dellar points out that the young actor received the princely fee of £30, “plus an extra fiver because the deluge ruined his shirt and shoes.”

While ‘The Image’ may not be remembered as making a particularly important contribution to the world of cinema, it is a great document of a very handsome young David Bowie as evidenced at the start of this piece.

If BowieNetters such as SusanS have not seen the film before, they should be warned that they could find some scenes distressing, as David does get handled rather roughly!

On a completely tenuous note…while searching for a decent grab to use for this piece I noticed a striking similarity between one particular shot and one of my very favourite self-portraits of David, ‘D Head V’. See the animation below for my easy comparison, but please be patient as it’s a big file. Are you experiencing a bit of déjà vu here?

By George, It's Ziggy

That weren’t no D.J. that was hazy cosmic jive…

This morning’s Daily Express and Daily Star have a sneak preview of popstar/DJ Boy George’s appearance this Saturday (ITV, 18:10 GMT) on Popstars in Their Eyes.

As we said back in July, (07/12/01 NEWS: BOWIE, BY GEORGE) George took the challenge seriously enough to shave off his eyebrows and have a special Ziggy wig made just for the appearance. He also employed the services of an acting coach to teach him how to talk like David, and used make-up artist Paul Starr for the finishing touches…Mr Starr is a man who has applied a bit of rouge to the chiselled Bowie cheekbones on more than one occasion.

See the animation below for the incredible transformation, but please be patient as it’s a big file.

The show, which is presented by Matthew Kelly, also stars A1, Belinda Carlisle, Claire Richards from Steps and Sonique, and as we exclusively revealed in our original piece, the song George performs is the Ziggy classic, ‘Starman’. But how well does he do? You’ll just have to tune in this Saturday to find out! Good luck George.

It’s George…no, it’s David…well it’s Ziggy anyway.
