Boston Set List, Pictures And Reviews

DB and another splendid example of his interpretative dance.

A FleetCenter Moment…

David Bowie continued the second leg of the North American stint of his A Reality Tour with a show at the FleetCenter in Boston last night. Here are a few words from BowieNetter Gwnavere again:

David was on fire, yet again, last night! He came out doubled up with two jackets. Again…more poses than I can remember where I wanted to whip it out (the camera) and seal the moment. Boston was sooo much better than Philly, imho, and much of that is to do with audience participation…and boy, did he get a GREAT response from them last night.

Energy was as hot as the night before, but David totally worked the crowd, the chants, the screams and the reactions to MANY THRUSTIFICATION MOMENTS. Sunday to Heathen is SOOO moving. It still comes as a surprise, but it’s absolutely brilliant. The sound, the rhythm, the stage show is so amazing. I do find myself tearing up a bit. I give it 2 very enthusiastic SOX UP!!!! Roll on New Orleans for me!

And here’s a couple of online reviews which you can reach by clicking on the links:

DB blissfully unaware of the expanding cosmos in Boston last night.

Philadelphia Set List, Pictures And Mini Reviews

DB does the Polyphonic dance in Philly last night.

I’m sinking in the Quicksand…

After an absence from live performance for a whole fortnight, David Bowie last night finally managed to conquer his demons with a much-anticipated return to the stage at the Wachovia Center in Philadelphia, PA. Actually, he just had a couple of weeks between shows, but it does seem an age since Hong Kong.

It was a familiar set opening with both Rebel Rebel and the now customary greeting accusations of incest. Here are a few very brief BowieNetter impressions to give you a tiny flavour of what went on… First up is PeaceFrog33:

It was a great show especially for me, a first time Bowie concert goer. Bowie was really funny tonight , especially when he messed up the lines to Quicksand. He stopped and said “Nobody leaves until I can do a slow song right!” So he did Life On Mars? (which BTW was AMAZING!)

Then while the band was changing instruments to retry Quicksand, Bowie said “So while the band changes their instruments…..um…..How bout this election? I don’t go anywhere near elections, I just sing songs about black magic and Satan!” Also, he said he should be more like The Polyphonic Spree. “Their should be more of this.” (He then jumped side by side while clapping) It was HILARIOUS! Great show!!!!

And this from Gwnavere:

“The Polyphonic….oh my….GREAT energy… And DB? New scarf, new jacket (and he so teased us with yet ANOTHER jacket under the new one), and a smile that could crack glass. He was in excellent spirits, and even performed his own interpretation of the Polyphonic Spree’s bopping dance.

He screwed up Quicksand the first go, but he’s forgiven, just for being such a babe. The man had so much HIP ACTION you’d think he was auditioning for a dancing cabana boy, or something. The hips were crazy, the thrusts were out of control, and the way he worked the stage made me realize that he is a photographer’s whore! LOL. Me, oh my.

And here’s Saxonny:

“The concert was fabulous. What a way to kick off the second leg of the U.S. Reality tour. The band rocked and Bowie sounded completely relaxed and refreshed; the energy level on stage really filtered through the crowd. At the “Morning After Diner” at mandn’s house, we all agreed that this concert really showcased the band’s talents. Garson had a fabulous little solo during Life on Mars, and Slick and Gerry were just…stunning during their moments. Philadelphia is Gail Ann Dorsey’s hometown, and she took the crowd’s breath away during Under Pressure.

They did something new; they played Sunday and then went STRAIGHT into Heathen. (Erm… that wasn’t the first time Sax, nevertheless… Blammo) It was poignant and beautiful and the entire crowd was still as they absorbed the music. And of course, the Quicksand incident, well, I won’t bother to go into that – I’m sure its been discussed to death on the boards. The new jacket was gorgeous, wish we could get a picture of it.

Gwnavere and Saxonny are good friends.

Growl growl woof woof… The Philly Dog is gonna get ya!

Many thanx to Ant for the great shots from last night’s show… and so, on to the officially confirmed set list from HNB:

Win Diamond Dogs Abbey Road Acetate Of Your Choice

If you want it, boys, get it here thing…

Around the time of the release (June 7th) of the Diamond Dogs 30th Anniversary Edition that I’ve been telling you about, (02.09.2004 NEWS: DIAMOND DOGS 30TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION & 03/06/04 NEWS: DIAMOND DOGS RELEASE DATE AND DIGITAL DOWNLOAD) we’ll be running a competition for stock copies of the beautifully packaged double disc.

As good as that is, a far more exciting prospect to anybody out there that’s as collecting berserk as I am, is an idea that Nigel at EMI has come up with:

“Blammo, do you think the BowieNet members would enjoy a competition where the prize was a true one-off Diamond Dogs collector’s item?”
“Possibly Nigel. What is it?”
“Well, how about the winner of a competition you dream up gets a one off Abbey Road vinyl acetate of the Diamond Dogs track of their choice?”
“Erm, they would probably squabble about it mate… and I don’t think any of them have record players anymore. Just run off one for me instead!”
“No Blam. Run along and create a competition now.”

And so…

I honestly think this is a truly generous prize, obviously unique and priceless at that… I would be happy if we received no entries at all so that I could get the acetate by default! But alas, it’s not to be.

So, just to go over what the prize is once again… The winner selects their favourite track from Diamond Dogs, and from the master tape a one-off acetate will be created at the legendary Abbey Road studios in London, complete with Abbey Road label, etc. I think the prize in this case deserves to go to a true lover of all things Diamond Dogs and for that reason I had originally intended to make the competition impossibly hard. But, I’ve relented and made it extremely hard instead. Actually, it’s not that bad.

Here’s what you have to do to enter. As you’ve no doubt noticed, I’ve created a montage of Bowie 45 single sleeves above. I’ve used ten different Diamond Dogs-related sleeves from around the globe, in that the A-side in each case is a track from the album. One of the ten is a four-track EP but the first track is still a track from Diamond Dogs.

All you need to do is simply identify all ten A-sides and send me a list of each of them with the corresponding country of origin. For example if you think the sleeve at the top left is the Lithuanian issue of Chant of the Ever Circling Skeletal Family, then you should state: 1 = Chant Of The Ever-Circling Skeletal Family – Lithuania ….etc., until you have listed all ten releases in any order you like. Easy, eh?

The competition is going to run for a whole month so you’ve got plenty of time to research. If you don’t already know what the sleeves are, you should be able to find them all somewhere online. A good starting point is Chris Carter‘s excellent site: The Young American. You may not find them all there but I didn’t want to make it that easy!

Apart from the main prize which will be drawn randomly when the competition ends on April 30th, (winner to be announced May 1st) there will be six runner-up prizes for the first six correct entries. The first of these will win some appropriately doggy prize and the other five will each get one of the stock copies around the time of the CD release. All of these winners will still be eligible for the main prize too.

So get working and send your list of ten answers to me at TotalBlamBlam@davidbowie.com with a subject line of Woof Woof.

Usual rules apply. One entry only per BowieNet member, and your entry must come from your BowieNet e-mail account. The very best of luck to each and every one of you. Stay tuned for a whole load more BowieNet competitions over the coming days and weeks.

Iman On The Bbc Tonight

Switch on the TV we may pick her up on channel two…

At 7:00pm on BBC 2 here in the UK tonight, the three-part series, When Black Became Beautiful, concludes with Out of Africa. Here’s the blurb from the BBC site:

Out of Africa charts the discovery and early career of Iman, an African beauty “straight out of the bush” – or so they said. She talks candidly about rivalries between models and the sheer ignorance shown by fashion journalists about her heritage.

These themes are expanded upon in a three-page Iman feature in the current Radio Times, ( long-running TV and radio listings magazine in which the programme has received choice tag) available in all good newsagents, etc.

Iman is married to British Glam Rock legend, David Bowie.

Bowie Mash-up For New Single?

Artwork rough for the Rex Ray Rebel Never Gets Old sleeve.

Rebel where d’ya wanna go?

Many of you have already seen a TV spot for Audi directed by Lance Acord of Park Pictures, which premiered on American TV recently. McKinney + Silver’s Audi campaign features a series of visuals following the technological progression of objects including a wheel and a headlight.

Earlier this week ads for the campaign started to appear in print too, with the depiction of a wooden wheel, a bicycle wheel, an antique car wheel and finally an Audi wheel, illustrated by the legend: “Move forward. Go where no one else has gone before, with road-gripping quattro all-wheel drive.”

Another ad shows the moon, a candle, a light bulb and Audi’s speed-sensitive headlights that “pivot when you steer.” The TV spot depicts a similar series of four images… all using the tagline, “Never follow.”

“Move forward. Go where no one else has gone before…” and “Never follow.” Who better to illustrate those notions than David Bowie? The musical soundtrack for the TV ad, created by Endless Noise, continues the theme of progression. It starts out as an acoustic version of Rebel Rebel, which then morphs into the rock version of the song, which in turn segues in to Never Get Old.

Moving on from the ideas suggested by the Audi campaign, is the creation of a Bowie ‘mash-up’ called Rebel Never Gets Old. Created by Mark Vidler of Go Home Productions, the track combines Rebel Rebel with Never Get Old to magnificent effect. David himself has made no secret of his love for mash-ups, and indeed, he championed the work of the mash-up duo, 2manydjs, absolutely zonks ago.

Neither is Mark Vidler a stranger to the music of David Bowie. He created a Bowie mash-up called David X almost a year ago for the May 2003 XFM Remix Superchunk, where he combined Let’s Dance with the vocals of the Liberty X track Got To Have Your Love …Not sure how legal the whole thing was, but you can listen to it here, as long as you don’t say we sent you! He also worked on a thing called Jacko Under Pressure (combining Michael Jackson‘s Rock With You with Queen and David Bowie’s Under Pressure) which received national radio play here in the UK.

Here’s a short Q&A I did with Mark today (small world… he lives three miles down the road from me) where he mentions other Bowie mash-ups he’s worked on.

What was your very first Bowie-related mash-up?

The first mash-up that I used a David Bowie track in was “David X”, which used “Let’s Dance” as the backing and Liberty X’s “Got To Have Your Love” acapella. This was used within a 30 minute ‘superchunk’ mix for XFM’s The Remix show back in May 2003.

What other Bowie mash-ups have you worked on since then?

Around July 2003 I was approached by EMI / Virgin to produce two tracks for a Bowie ‘mash-up’ / ‘remix’ project. “I’m Afraid Of Making Plans For Americans” was a mixture of Bowie’s ‘I’m Afraid of Americans’ and XTC’s ‘Making Plans For Nigel’ and I also supplied a remix of ‘Fame’.

In November I put together a track called ‘Jacko Under Pressure’ which blends Queen & Bowie’s “Under Pressure” with Michael Jackson’s ‘Rock With You’ and must admit that it caused quite a stir as it coincided with Mr Jackon’s arrest. David Bowie’s vocals are the only other vocals left in the mix other than Michael Jackson’s and work really well after the build up of the chorus.

In January I also created a track for inclusion in a longer radio mix, that used vocal elements from David’s ‘Young Americans’, called “Cry Dub”.

How were you approached by the Bowie organisation and what was the trigger for that?

After the initial interest from EMI / Virgin last year, the Bowie organisation requested to hear my Sex Pistols vs Madonna mix ‘Ray Of Gob’ and seemed impressed enough to commission the two tracks that I mention above. I am of the understanding that they were quite ‘familiar’ with my mixes.

Were you already a fan of David’s music particularly?

To be honest I grew up with David Bowie’s music in the seventies and have been an avid fan and admirer of his work since then. I distinctly remember wearing out my uncle’s copy of ‘Low’ in the late seventies, due to my love of ‘Sound And Vision’ and the whole buzz that surrounded ‘Scary Monsters’ whilst getting into buying and collecting records, at that time. ‘Life on Mars’ remains my favourite single and ‘Aladdin Sane’ my favourite Bowie album, although I could quite easily name several.

How do you feel about the possibility of Rebel Never Gets Old receiving a release as a legitimate David Bowie single?

It’s fantastic. Very exciting. I think that being such a fan of David’s work in the first place gives it that ‘special’ meaning for me. It’s great that it is being considered and I think the track is quite unique in it’s own way, in terms of being a single. It may well surprise a few people.

How many mixes have you made for Rebel Never Gets Old?

I have produced three versions. A 3.25 ‘single’ mix that maintains the ‘rock’ feel of both ‘Rebel Rebel’ and ‘Never Get Old’. There is a 7.22 ‘Seventh Heaven Mix’ which adds contemporary ‘dance’ elements but with more of an early eighties guitar ‘edge’ to the production. Finally a 4.17 ‘Seventh Heaven Mix’ edit.

Thanx so much for that Mark…hope your wardrobe came together OK! };-)

Anyway kidz, as you just read above, the good news is that Rebel Never Gets Old is being touted as a possible single release and we’ll be posting one of the versions of it here shortly.

Also, stay tuned to BowieNet to see how you can get involved with creating a Bowie mash-up of your very own, in an exciting new competition we’ll be running in the very near future.

Bye Bye To Mark And Lard

Not only is it the last show of the week. But, it’s the last show we’ll ever do!

I think everybody here in the UK must have heard about the fact that national institution, Mark and Lard, are to go their separate ways. After several decades of working as Britain’s best-loved DJ duo on ‘The Biggest Show’ for Radio 1, the pair are to go on to bigger and better things elsewhere for the BBC. Mark Radcliffe is destined for a solo show at Radio 2 and Marc ‘The Boy Lard’ Riley has his own thing going on over at 6 Music.

Regular visitors to these pages will know just how important Mark and Lard have been in keeping the Bowie flag flying over the years… a fact not lost on David who pays his own personal tribute early in today’s show. If you read this piece too late, don’t fret, you can listen to David’s message here.

On a personal note, I’d like to say how proud I am to have Lard as one of my very dearest friends, a warmer more generous chap you couldn’t wish to meet… Anyway, before I get too emotional here, thanx for the fun, laughter, tears and absolute bollocks over the years lads, and here’s to an even brighter future for you both.

Foot Note: If you missed today’s fun, you can listen to the last ever show by clicking on Lard’s knackers in the picture above.
