Hear Exclusive (she Can) Do That Snippet

Keep cool…

Some time last week we told you all about the new track on the forthcoming Stealth OST album, (She Can) Do That, by David Bowie and BT. (06.23.2005 NEWS: DB TALKS ABOUT BT AND STEALTH SOUNDTRACK)

Well, as you’ve no doubt gathered from the headline above, we have an exclusive snippet of the new collaboration which was created specifically for the soundtrack by DB and BT.

You can read a little bit about what our man had to say about the creation of the song in aforementioned news piece. In the meantime, here’s that snippet in two different formats:

Db Talks About Bt And Stealth Soundtrack

Keep going, keep going, keep going, keep going…

I know the eagle-eyed among you have spotted what appears to be a new track on the forthcoming Stealth OST album. Well you’re right. (She Can) Do That by David Bowie and BT is a new collaboration created specifically for the soundtrack.

For those of you not familiar with the name BT, he’s a famous dance/trance producer who has been releasing records since 1996. You can read more about him on the official BT site, including details of his work on lots of big film soundtracks and remixes for the likes of Madonna, Korn, Tori Amos, Depeche Mode, Lenny Kravitz, Seal and many others.

This is what DB had to say about working on (She Can) Do That with him:

“BT wanted me to write the lyrics and top line melody for a backing track that he had written and produced for the forthcoming Jamie Fox movie ‘Stealth’. I wrote my part in New York and recorded it at Looking Glass. I then sent the Pro-Tools parts back to BT in LA and he did the mix there.”

I can tell you that (She Can) Do That is a 3:15 minute dance track with an incredibly infectious chorus. Imagine if Talking Heads had contributed a song to the Labyrinth soundtrack. Well, this sounds a little bit like that…kind of…a bit, perhaps.

One thing’s for sure, once you hear that chorus it’s in your brain forever. Great stuff.

Here’s the full tracklisting for the Stealth soundtrack CD:

01 Make A Move ? Incubus

(She Can) Do That will feature on both the CD and in the film. The Stealth soundtrack CD is released through Sony on July 12th. The film itself, directed by Rob Cohen and Jamie Fox‘s first since last year’s Oscar winning Ray, is released in North America on July 29th and throughout the rest of the world over the following months.

Bowie Back In Billboard Top 10

It couldn’t be done without dogs…

Two Bowie-penned tunes, his own Suffragette City and Iggy Pop‘s Success, grace the Lords of Dogtown soundtrack album.

Already out in the US, the film is due for release around the globe over the next few months. You can see the breakdown of release dates on the official Lords of Dogtown site.

However, two weeks after the release of the CD, the album has gone top ten on the Billboard Top Soundtracks chart…and it’s no real surprise that it’s a popular purchase with a tracklisting like this:

01 Social Distortion – Death Or Glory
02 Nazareth – Hair Of The Dog
03 Foghat – I Just Want to Make Love to You
04 Sweet – Fox on the Run
05 Ted Nugent – Motor City Madhouse
06 Joe Walsh – Turn to Stone
07 The Allman Brothers Band – One Way Out
08 Jimi Hendrix – Fire
09 Deep Purple – Space Truckin’
10 Iggy Pop – Success
11 David Bowie – Suffragette City

12 Black Sabbath – Iron Man
13 Rise Against – Nervous Breakdown
14 T-Rex – 20th Century Boy
15 Rod Stewart – Maggie May
16 Sparklehorse – Wish You Were Here

Trivia buffs may like to know that not only does Suffragette City follow Success in the tracklisting above, but it does also in an alphabetic list of all the songs David has written or co-written. Now there’s one to impress the guests with at your next dinner party.

Thanx to BowieNetter Saxonny (Gwnavere‘s close friend) for pointing me in the direction of this compilation yonks ago. Woof woof!

David Bowie: Pin Up View And Buy Online Now

A London boy, oh a London boy, Your flashy clothes are your pride and joy…

Those of you that can’t physically get along to the David Bowie: Pin Up exhibition currently showing in London, will be pleased to learn that the 41 pictures that make up the show can now be viewed online.

Click on the wonderful image above of a pair of young mods by Fiona Adams to get to the online gallery where you can also purchase prints of each shot. The particular photograph above was published in a magazine in 1965 as part of a fashion spread.

As for the BowieNet only view at the gallery this coming Saturday afternoon (June 25th), there has now been a slight change of plan as I announced on the MBs a couple of days ago. For those of you that missed that post, here’s the gist of it again…

The event has been extended by an hour and now runs from noon until six. Though Redferns is happy to admit 60 of us at one time, I personally feel it will be a little uncomfortable if this horribly humid weather we’re having lasts until the weekend.

If you want to be there for six hours, then you’re welcome to get there at noon and stay for the duration. But, for the more sane among you, you might want to attend during just one of three two hour shifts.

To this end, I have created a poll on the MBs in the hope that I can get a rough idea of how many are likely to attend during each time period. Of the 60 BowieNetters attending, 25 have voted so far, 64 per cent of whom intend to be there for the middle slot of 2:00pm to 4:00pm. This now means that everybody who originally applied can attend, or indeed, any BowieNetter who happens to be in the area can, as it won’t be so crowded.

BowieNetter OldSalt has kindly located a good nearby public house, The Station, where I believe most of us will be repairing to, to sample the local fare (they do splendid grub apparently) and make a bit of an evening of it.

If you’d prefer not to see any more of the pictures before Saturday as you’d rather keep them a surprise, then don’t click on either of the images here on this page.

Db Explains Inspiration For Charity Artwork

I know you think you’re awful square…

You’ve most likely already heard about David and Iman‘s artwork contributions to the 21st Century Leaders charity organisation’s campaign: whateverittakes.org. If you haven’t, then as you’ve probably guessed, that’s them above.

First up in the slideshow above is a black and white enlargement of the pair’s stick figures, (more of which shortly) followed by the front and back of David and Iman’s plate designs respectively. David’s work is entitled: Peace Thru Art and Iman’s is Peace Thru Tolerance.

You can view the plate designs at your own speed via these short cuts: Peace Thru Art (Plate Reference – DBow1) and Peace Thru Tolerance (Plate Reference – Iman1).

The porcelain plates will be sold by tableware distributors in 23 countries. Other products include wristbands, T-shirts and mugs. We’ll post more details on how to buy these items as they become available. Selected wristbands are already on sale at whateverittakes.org, (the Bowie one is listed as “coming soon”) and also at Virgin Megastores from tomorrow (June 19th).

Here’s an edited excerpt from the 21st Century Leaders site explaining further what they’re about…

————————————————————————————————————-

21st Century Leaders is a unique charity artwork project. The concept is simple. We gather artworks from leaders in all fields and each ambassador donates a symbol of hope. These artworks are being used to create products for the 21CL label.

The goal of 21st Century Leaders‘ charitable brand is to sell ‘merchandise with a meaning’. All products are manufactured under fair working conditions and are sold to raise funds for charitable causes chosen by each contributing leader.

100% of net profits are donated to charity. The aim is to raise a minimum of $3 million over three years to fund charitable projects in developing countries, contribute to the protection of the environment and other charitable causes.

————————————————————————————————————-

I asked David about the similarity between his and Iman’s stick figure designs, and what the inspiration behind them was. Here’s how he very kindly elaborated just for you info-hungry BowieNetters…

————————————————————————————————————-

Two Sitting Figures On Stripes I by Lynn Chadwick, 1972.

“Iman and I based the square and triangular heads of the ‘mum and dad’ on the work of the late British sculptor Lynn Chadwick who we had met a couple of times. When I took Iman on a driving holiday of Britain in the 90’s we stopped off at his wonderful house and studio near Slough and had tea with him and his family.

Teddy Boy and Girl, 1955 by Lynn Chadwick. Patinated bronze 1900 x 700mm.

Iman had, two years before, bought me the most wonderful piece by Chadwick from the fifties called Teddy Boy and Girl so it was a treat to get to meet the guy. After he died I believe D. Hirst bought the property.”

————————————————————————————————————-

So now you know, kidz. What do you mean, you wanna know the inspiration behind David’s T-shirt design type thing on the front of the plate too? Get outta here. Enough already, etc.

Spooky Back In The Land Of The Living Room

DB and Spooky attempt to out red-eye each other backstage at the Roseland.

Won’t you play a haunting theme again to me?

Gerry Leonard has been in touch with details of a few more solo shows that should interest those of you in the Boston and New York areas over the next couple of days… and, indeed others elsewhere beyond that. So here are those very details straight from the Spooky boy himself…

So here is the thing Ghosties. Apparently Spooky Ghost will play some shows over the summer. Apparently some people were asking. Allegedly of course. Apparently something might happen. It would be great to see you all there. Love is all that separates us from the Mud. Don’t forget now…

David Bowie: Pin Up Exhibition Opens Tomorrow

And tomorrow’s of rich surprise…

If you’re in the London area and you like the look of David Bowie, then perhaps you should keep an eye on the media today (and over the next few days) for reports from this evening’s private view and tomorrow’s public opening of the David Bowie: Pin Up exhibition.

I think I’ve said enough about this fine photographic retrospective for now, as I don’t want to give any more away for those of you planning to go along. You can see my original news pieces for more. (03.30.05 NEWS: SUMMER BOWIE PHOTOGRAPHIC RETROSPECTIVE & 05.07.05 NEWS: BOWIENET DAY AT DAVID BOWIE: PIN UP EXHIBITION & 05.31.05 NEWS: LAST CHANCE TO JOIN IN PIN UP EXHIBITION BOWIENET DAY & 06.01.05 NEWS: DAVID BOWIE: PIN UP EXHIBITION BOWIENET DAY WINNERS & 06.03.05 NEWS: TIMES HAS MORE DAVID BOWIE: PIN UP EXHIBITION STUFF)

We also have four more names from the standby list for the BowieNet only view at the gallery on the afternoon of Saturday June 25th, after a similar number from the original list dropped out.

If the following four BowieNetters can confirm that they would still be able to make it, then they have a place on the 25th now too.

The Nomi Song Released On Dvd

And now he is a puppet dancer…

Andrew Horn‘s ?non-fiction film?, The Nomi Song: The Klaus Nomi Odyssey which we told you about back in February, (02.10.2005 NEWS: SEE DB AND FRIENDS ON THE BIG SCREEN) is finally released on DVD in both region 0 and 1 formats.

As I said in that earlier news piece, I’m sure everybody is aware of Klaus Nomi and Joey Arias‘ extraordinary contribution to David’s appearance on Saturday Night Live On December 19, 1979.

David performed three songs on the show: The Man Who Sold The World, Boys Keep Swinging (from which, the behind-the-scenes shot, above) and TVC15, which remain among the most bizarre television performances broadcast anywhere, ever.

I’ve not seen the DVD yet, so I’m not sure just how much of the SNL performance is represented…I have a nasty feeling it’s not very much at all. However, regardless of the Bowie content, if the little chap to David’s left in the screen grab below intrigued you during aforementioned performances to the point of wanting more, then The Nomi Song should slake your thirst.

DVD Features:

~ Available Audio Tracks: English (Dolby Digital 2.0)
~ Commentary by The Director
~ Deleted scenes
~ Behind the scenes interviews
~ 3 full length musical numbers
~ Mini-tour of the East Village
~ Two exclusive audio tracks featuring remixes of ‘Total Eclipse’
~ Theatrical trailer
~ Interviews with songwriters Kristian Hoffman, Lou Chrisitie, and other artists
~ Full performance of “The Cold Song” and “After the Fall”
~ SNL performance David Bowie and Klaus Nomi from December 15, 1979

~ How to bake the Klaus Nomi lime tart
~ Fan club mail bag

The Nomi Song: The Klaus Nomi Odyssey DVD is released through Palm Pictures on June 14th, and, as I pointed out in that February news piece, you can view a trailer, in which there are a couple of very brief snatches from Saturday Night Live, here.

Click on either of the pictures above to reach the official The Nomi Song site.

New Moonage Daydream Cover Revealed

The solid book we wrote can not be found today… (but will be available soon)

Above is a sneak preview of the striking new cover of the forthcoming commercial version of David Bowie and Mick Rock‘s Moonage Daydream: The Life & Times of Ziggy Stardust.

The 320 page hardback will be published on September 20th and will retail at the extraordinarily low price of $50, and at around thirty quid in the UK. (Amazon UK are already listing it for under £25!)

We’ll hopefully have competition copies to give away nearer the time, and we’ll definitely have one of the original Genesis Publications limited editions (retailing at £295) up for grabs, of which, you may remember, David Bowie had this to say:

“This is a book of extraordinary photographs. Ziggy Stardust blazed briefly but intensely, and I am delighted to see his life and times as a rock ‘n’ roll star immortalised in this beautiful limited edition.”
