Michelle Branch Covers Life On Mars For Gap

The girl with the mousy hair…

Hot on the heels of the G4 release of David Bowie’s Life On Mars? as a download only single, (07.18.05 NEWS: G4 LIFE ON MARS DIGI-SINGLE OUT NOW) news reaches us of another version of the song by Michelle Branch scheduled for September 1st via a limited edition Gap stores promotional CD.

I have to admit I’m ignorant of the work of Michelle Branch, though it seems she has had massive success in the States. Whatever, here’s some stuff from Gap regarding the CD…

A limited edition CD featuring campaign artists performing their favorite songs will be available exclusively at Gap stores and Gap.com beginning September 1. The CD contains eight songs exclusively recorded for Gap by the stars of the new ad campaign, a director?s cut of the fall TV commercial and exclusive behind-the-scenes footage from the filming of the commercial. Gap customers will receive the CD, while supplies last, as a gift with any Gap purchase of $60 or more from September 1 ? September 17, 2005.

Following is a list of each of the musical artist?s favourite song as featured on the CD:

1 Alanis Morissette – ?Crazy? (Seal)
2 Joss Stone – ?God Only Knows? (Beach Boys)
3 John Legend – ?Hello It?s Me? (Isley Brothers)
4 Michelle Williams – ?Let?s Stay Together? (Al Green)
5 Jason Mraz – ?One Love? (Bob Marley)
6 Keith Urban – ?Most People I Know Think I?m Crazy? (Billy Thorpe)
7 Brandon Boyd – ?Alison? (Elvis Costello)
8 Michelle Branch – “Life On Mars?” (David Bowie)

Lulu And Ziggy Pic Raises Over A Grand

To be right in that photograph…

The photograph of David Bowie and Lulu on eBay that we told you about a few days ago (07.28.05 NEWS: LULU AUCTIONS ZIGGY ON EBAY FOR CHARITY) reached a very impressive final bid of £1,031.00 (approx. $1,827USD).

The photograph, donated and signed by Lulu, is by far and away the most successful of Nigella Lawson’s auctions, which is great news as all of the proceeds go to breast cancer charities.

While we’re talking expensive photographs, the David Bowie: Pin Up exhibition (07.02.05 SNIPPET: LAST WEEK’S BOWIENET VIEW AT REDFERNS GALLERY) has been extended until Saturday August 13th – BowieNetters can still get a 10 per cent discount off the pictures in the gallery which can be viewed here.

Also, don’t forget that the Suffragette Cities poster exhibition (07.05.05 NEWS: SUFFRAGETTE CITIES POSTER EXHIBITION AND BOOK) closes the day before on Friday August 12th.

Lulu Auctions Ziggy On Ebay For Charity

Ziggy takes the weight off his platform boots,
while Brian Jones and the lovely Lulu look on.

He said I was his friend…

With a little over 24 hours to go, a photograph of David Bowie and Lulu from 1973 has already reached the incredible sum of £840.00 (approx. $1,465USD) on eBay.

Of course, it’s no ordinary photograph, it has hung on singer Lulu’s wall at her home since she received the print over thirty years ago, and she’s signed it for good measure.

It’s no ordinary eBay auction either. Celebrity chef, Nigella Lawson, who has a new lunchtime chat show on ITV in the UK, has an eBay page for which she encourages guests on the show to donate an item for auction, the proceeds of which go to breast cancer charities.

Lulu was a recent guest, as witnessed by BowieNetter jungtheforeman, and her generous donation is easily the most successful of Nigella’s auctions so far. Long before the auction has even ended it already commands the highest price of Nigella’s dozen or so auctions to date.

The picture itself (above), is from the same session as the one at the top of this piece. Many different shots from this session (including colour ones) were used in the press around the time of the release of Lulu’s Bowie/Ronson-produced The Man Who Sold The World/Watch That Man hit single. But, without double-checking, I have a feeling that this exact eBay shot is actually unpublished.

The photograph is framed and measures approximately 29? x 23?. Ignore the cloudy blurred bits, they’re just the reflection of the chap that took the shot for the auction.

You can join in the bidding by clicking on either of the above pix. You can also read more about Nigella’s Online Auctions here.

Bowie As The Elephant Man: 25th Anniversary

I could play the wild mutation…

Today is the 25th anniversary of David Bowie’s first onstage performance as The Elephant Man, in the stage play of the same name.

He opened at Denver Center of Performing Arts on 29th July 1980 and his exceptional performance drew the following sample press comments when the show transferred to Broadway later that year:

“shockingly good” – New York Post

“piercing and haunted” – New York Daily News

“preternaturally wise” – New York Times

David himself had this to say to The Daily Mirror at the time: “It is undoubtedly the biggest single challenge of my career. Going onto Broadway is the fulfilment of a great dream.”

A trawl through futher press cuttings is a humbling experience as superlatives are rained upon his extraordinary interpretation of John Merrick without the aid of prosthetics or make-up.

David’s triumph in the part was the subject of a BowieNet special feature, compiled five years ago by BowieNet members. (12.14.2000 NEWS: BOWIENET MEMBERS SPECIAL FEATURE : DAVID BOWIE in THE ELEPHANT MAN and 01.03.2001 SNIPPET: ELEPHANT MAN)

To celebrate the anniversary today, you can look once again at those reminscences, photographs and press cuttings by clicking on David’s loincloth in either picture.

Db Will Play Fashion Rocks At Radio City

It was a day in that blue month September…

Despite reporting that David Bowie plans no live work for 2005 earlier in the year, (02.02.2005 NEWS: NO BOWIE LIVE DATES PLANNED FOR 2005) we are thrilled to confirm his return to the stage for the Fashion Rocks event that is taking place at Radio City Music Hall in New York on September 8th.

What form that performance will take has not yet been finalised, so I can’t say just yet if it will be with his band, with a band, solo or with elephants.

What I can say is that he is planning to perform just one number and that tickets go on sale for this unique appearance this coming Friday the 29th at 10:00am local time.

Apart from David Bowie the line-up so far includes: Destiny?s Child, Duran Duran, Billy Idol, Alicia Keys, Tim McGraw, Gwen Stefani, Joss Stone, Rob Thomas and many more yet to be announced.

David Live And Stage Dvd-audio Release Date

Waiting so long, I’ve been waiting so, waiting so…

As you may have noticed, we’ve been loath to give a release date for the 5:1 David Live and Stage DVD-Audios since we first announced that they would be produced almost a year ago. (08/25/04 NEWS: DAVID LIVE AND STAGE REISSUE DETAILS)

The delay has apparently been of a technical nature due to the size of the audio files which have needed very careful encoding. I guess this technology is relatively new territory, and I think you’ll agree that after waiting this long it’s best that the discs are exactly right.

At the moment both David Live (DVDA 874 3049) and Stage (DVDA 863 4369) are due for a November 14th release (15th in North America), though I wouldn’t be surprised if this date is revised by a week or two nearer the time.

I’ve not been told that any of the previous technical information has changed, so here it is again for those that missed it last time around. This is what each DVD-A will contain…

~ MLP 5.1 (for playing on DVD-A players) 48kHz 24 bit
~ DTS 5.1 (for playing on DVD-A and DVD-V players) 48kHz 24 bit
~ Stereo (new mix as per released CD’s playable on DVD-A and DVD-V players) 48kHz 24 bit
~ Photo gallery which will include images used on packaging, and scans of related record sleeves, press adverts and memorabilia.

So here’s to November, when you too can experience exactly what it was those lucky listeners got to hear at Abbey Road back in February. (02.14.05 NEWS: ABBEY ROAD PLAYBACK…BOWIENETTERS REPORT)

Happy Birthday To Iman From Bowienet

Forget that I’m fifty…

While it ill-becomes a gentleman to reveal a lady’s age, I know you’ll understand that I’m clearly no gentleman and it’s hardly a secret that the incredibly youthful Iman is fifty today.

I’m nervous about making too much of a fuss about it though, after reading this exchange in a recent interview

Q: In July, you will turn 50. How do you feel about getting your AARP card?

A: Turning 50 seems to be more of a milestone for the people around me than it is for me! My life has never been more rich and exciting, and the good things in my life give me the energy of a 25-year-old.

Regardless, I know you’ll all want to join me in wishing Iman a very special day, which shouldn’t be too hard when you look and feel like that and you have the company of such a wonderful family.

Happy birthday Iman, with much love from everybody at BowieNet.

(NB: I’d like to use this opportunity to thank all of those who pointed out via e-mail and the like that color is in fact the American spelling of the more correct colour. Well I never! (07.20.05 NEWS: NEW IMAN BEAUTY GUIDE DUE IN THE AUTUMN) More importantly, I’d like to thank those that didn’t e-mail me!)

New Iman Beauty Guide Due In The Autumn

While colour lights up your face…

Iman has a brand new beauty guide for girls (and boys) of colour which is due to go on sale in the US on October 11th and in Europe on November 17th.

The 176 page hardcover published by Putnam Adult is called: The Beauty of Color: The Ultimate Beauty Guide for Skin of Color and is available for pre-order through all decent online outlets such as BARNES&NOBLE and amazon.

Here’s the press release for those of you that have had your fancy tickled thus far…

————————————————————————————————————-

From the beloved fashion icon and cosmetics entrepreneur, the first book to embrace global beauty and women of all ethnicities.

Few faces are as instantly recognizable as that of Iman’s. She’s been a groundbreaking supermodel for the world’s top designers and a muse for photographers, and she is the founder of the world’s most popular cosmetic brand for skin of color.

Now, in an era when the face of beauty has changed-and the most celebrated women in Hollywood include such stars as Halle Berry, Jennifer Lopez, and Lucy Liu – Iman delivers a new approach to makeup and skin care. With The Beauty of Color, she revolutionizes the way women of color can think about the way they look and feel.

Iman resists categorizing people according to ethnicity, and instead embraces the whole range of skin color-light to dark. This is the first beauty and makeup book to truly address skin tones across the spectrum-Latina, Black, Asian, Indian, Native American, Mediterranean, Middle Eastern, as well as women of mixed ethnicities.

Inspired by her two illustrious careers-first as a world-class supermodel and then as founder of two of the world’s top cosmetics lines – Iman is uniquely aware of the difficulties women of color have always had with skin care and makeup. In The Beauty of Color, Iman teaches readers how to work with skin care regimens and palettes targeted to their exact skin tone and type.

With stunning color photographs and images on every page, the book itself is a work of beauty, featuring Salma Hayek, Tyra Banks, Venus and Serena Williams, and other celebrities, as well as ordinary women of all ages. Unique, informative, and creative, The Beauty of Color is not only the first book to show women of every shade how to look their very best, but is also a landmark celebration of global beauty.

Something I feel duty-bound to point out if you’re reading this Iman…and please don’t shoot the messenger…But, it looks like they spelt colour wrong on the cover, twice! };-)

New Mix Of Fame On Hip Hop Roots Cd

“Is she or isn’t she?” DB favours a spray of Harmony between
takes during the recording of Fame on Soul Train, November 1975.

Fame, fame, fame, fame, fame, fame, fame, fame, fame, fame, fame, etc….

You may have heard about the forthcoming 12-track compilation CD due next month called: Tommy Boy Presents: Hip Hop Roots. The album contains David Bowie’s classic track, Fame, from Young Americans just in time for the 30th anniversary of the release of the single.

Compiled by Tom Silverman, founder and CEO of Tommy Boy, the release features: “twelve of the most sampled tracks that would become building blocks of Hip Hop music.”

I was surprised to see Fame clocking in at four minutes and fifty seconds on the promo CD. (The normal album version is 4:12 while the single edit is just 3:25)

I think a clue to this different edit lays in the press release, which states: “Legendary DJ and producer, Jazzy Jay, added his extra special flavor to the compilation by editing a few tracks the way he would have done live in 1980, at the T-Connection.” So I’m guessing that Fame is one of the tracks that received this treatment.

It seems that after the familiar intro, the extra 25 seconds or so are spliced in so that the descending “Fame, fame, fame, fame…” hook is included before the main vocal starts…which now doesn’t come in for a minute and a quarter.

While it doesn’t sound a big deal, it actually works really well and I don’t think people who aren’t as familiar with the song as you or I would necessarily notice. It’s just a great way of getting a longer version of the track without it being a nasty remix.

As I’m sure you all know, Fame was David’s first US #1 and it probably helped secure him a place as one of the first white musicians to appear on Soul Train (see pic above) on which he also performed Golden Years from the forthcoming Station To Station album.

I’ll leave you with the press release, followed by the CD cover and track listing…

Tommy Boy Presents: Hip Hop Roots

Tom Silverman, founder and CEO of Tommy Boy announces the release of HIP HOP ROOTS on both CD and double vinyl. Personally selected and compiled by Silverman, this collection features twelve of the most sampled tracks that would become building blocks of Hip Hop music.

From Rock hits like Billy Squier’s “The Big Beat” most recently featured on Jay Z’s “99 Problems” to Bob James’ “Take Me to the Mardi Gras” sampled by Run DMC for “Peter Piper” and LL Cool J on “Rock the Bells”…From Cymande’s “Bra” most popularly used in DJ Kool’s “Let Me Clear My Throat” to outerspace hits like UFO by ESG heard in Man Parrish’s electro hit, “Boogie Down Bronx”…. From David Bowie’s Rock/Funk hit “Fame” lifted by Public Enemy for “Night of the Living Baseheads” to the Monkees’ “Mary Mary” quoted by Run DMC for their hit of the same title…Disco, Funk, Soul, Rock, Jazz, Pop and Reggae were united and extended under the DJs hands to mold into Hip Hop.

In his liner notes, Silverman hearkens back to 1980, in the “Breaks Room”, at Downstairs Records, where a “music revolution was being born.” In this room, one could buy vinyl by artists such as “Dennis Coffey, Bob James, Jimmy Castor, The Eagles, Incredible Bongo Band, Herman Kelly and Life, The Monkees and so many more that seemingly had nothing to do with each other” except for the fact that the founding fathers of Hip Hop, were digging them up and rocking them in the Bronx.

He also recounts, in 1980, going to the legendary T-Connection, in the Bronx, to see Afrika Bambaataa spin. “There, working the turntables, was Afrika Bambaataa… To his left and right were Jazzy Jay and Red Alert waiting for their turn to mix… Some of the records had the label steamed off so other DJs would not know what he was playing. Evidently his efforts were in vain because 25 years later, DJs and producers are still relying on the beats that he, Kool Herc and Grandmaster Flash discovered.”

Legendary DJ and producer, Jazzy Jay, added his extra special flavor to the compilation by editing a few tracks the way he would have done live in 1980, at the T-Connection.

Tom Silverman summarizes, “I believe that the strength of Hip Hop over 26 years unlike any other kind of music has been its inclusive nature. Rather than be elitist or separatist, Hip Hop is accepting and absorbing of outside influences. African, Latin, Disco, Funk, or the corniest Pop or soundtracks were accepted and made the genre stronger just as America is made strong by its confluence of cultures and rainbow of peoples.”

G4 Life On Mars Digi-single Out Now

Oh man! Look at those cavemen go, It’s the freakiest show…

The popular X Factor vocal quartet, G4, release their version of David Bowie’s Life On Mars? as a download only single today.

The track is taken from the group’s self-titled debut album, which also contains a cover version of My Way. Anybody who knows the history of Life On Mars? will no doubt see the irony in that.

The song is one of the most covered of Bowie tracks with at least 40 recordings existing. G4‘s version follows in the footsteps of other vocal groups’ attempts at the song, such as, Manhattan Transfer and The King Singers.

Of course, those aren’t the only artists to have murdered the Hunky Dory classic, Anni-Frid Lyngstad did her best, and when asked by Cameron Crowe in the infamous September 1976 PlayBoy interview how he felt about Barbra Streisand‘s 1974 version, DB himself famously responded thus: “Bloody awful. Sorry, Barb, but it was atrocious.”

The balance has been somewhat redressed in recent years with covers of Life On Mars? by the likes of The Flaming Lips, The Eurythmics, The Divine Comedy and Frank Sidebottom!

Anyway, fans of G4 who missed the band’s performance of the song on cd:uk yesterday, will be relieved to learn that the show is repeated on Thursday night/Friday morning on ITV in the UK at 1:55am.

STOP PRESS: G4 will also perform Life On Mars? live on ITV’s This Morning programme in the UK on Tuesday morning.
