Bids For Bowie Boots Already At Two Thousand Dollars

I got seven days to place my bid…

With a mere 72 hours of the 10-day auction on eBay for a pair of David Bowie’s boots having elapsed so far, the interest in this charity donation has exceeded all expectations.

We told you about the UK size eight and a half leather-type white Chelsea boots earlier in the week, (11.28.2006 NEWS: LANDMINE CHARITY BOWIE BOOTS AUCTION NOW LIVE) when, within only a couple of hours of the boots going live on eBay, they had already received bids more than three times higher than the next closest bid.

Well now, as I write this piece, the bidding has crossed the thousand pound line and is currently at £1,020 GBP!! (Approx. $2,000 USD) The next closest bid is £275 GBP for a pair of Phil Collins‘ Puma boots, which proves that the Bowie fans bidding on these boots are either very generous, very rich or quite mental…or a combination of all these things.

With one whole week left before the auction ends, I think we may be in for more surprises yet.

Don’t forget that the Give Landmines The Boot campaign is raising money for a very worthy charity: MAG (Mines Advisory Group). Even if the Bowie boots are way out of your financial league, there are still many great bargains to be had.

Db's Arnold Layne On Radio 2 This Morning Plus Ep Update

Nothing can hide for long, We are the morning song…

As I mentioned on the MBs yesterday, David Bowie’s rendition of Pink Floyd‘s Arnold Layne that he performed with Dave Gilmour at the Royal Albert Hall in May, (05.30.2006 NEWS: DB SURPRISE GUEST AT LONDON GILMOUR GIG) is to receive its first radio play on Ken Bruce‘s show on Radio 2 this morning between 9:30am and midday…though my spies at the BBC tell me that it’s likely to be played more specifically at about 11.30am. But don’t blame me if that turns out to be inaccurate. (In the event the track was played around 11.15am for those of you that need to listen again.)

The song has already made it to the B LIST on the Radio 2 Playlist, this means that you can expect to hear it around ten times during the course of the week from Saturday. However, the more requests the track receives from listeners, (see Ken’s e-mail addy above) the bigger the chance it has of making it on to the A list where it would receive around twenty plays per week.

Don’t worry if you miss all of the live plays, you’ll still be able to use the listen again feature on Ken’s home page by clicking on the closest thing Radio 2 has to a Mike Garson look-alike, above.

Even more exciting than this radio news is the fact that you’ll be able to watch the video on David Gilmour’s site from Monday (December 4th), so be sure to log on and check it out. (Radio 2 has now scooped this exclusive, see update below.)

Continue reading for some updates regarding the release later this month of the Arnold Layne EP

As we reported last month, (11.13.2006 NEWS: DB’S ARNOLD LAYNE ISSUED ON EP IN MEMORY OF SYD) the upcoming 3-track EP (above) will be available to download from iTunes, and other digital media, from Christmas Day onwards.

The very next day, there will be a limited 7″ pressing in Europe and a 10″ version in North America, both expected to be restricted to approximately 5,000 copies based on the initial orders.

So be sure to pre-order a copy at your local record emporium to avoid disappointment, as there will most likely be just as many interested Gilmour fans as there will be Bowie fans…not to mention Richard Wright and Syd Barrett fans!

There will also be a CD single available in Europe only. You will be able to hear David Gilmour introducing DB on-stage on the vinyl versions, but not on the CD. These will all be available from Tuesday 26th December.

Here’s the tracklisting again:

The David Gilmour Syd Barrett EP

01 Arnold Layne ~ David Gilmour featuring David Bowie
02 Arnold Layne ~ David Gilmour featuring Richard Wright
03 Dark Globe ~ David Gilmour

Stay tuned for more info nearer the time, and release details of the forthcoming David Gilmour Live at The Royal Albert Hall DVD.

IMPORTANT UPDATE: After he played the track, Ken Bruce announced that the video for Arnold Layne will be exclusively revealed on the Radio 2 site from 6:00pm this evening, UK time.

Landmine Charity Bowie Boots Auction Now Live

Shoes, shoes, little white shoes…*

David Bowie has joined a whole host of celebrities who have donated items of footwear to the MAG (Mines Advisory Group) Give Landmines The Boot campaign for a 10-day auction on eBay.

David donated a pair of his own patent leather-type white Chelsea boots with black elasticated sides and thick black soles, as pictured below.

Here’s the eBay blurb regarding this rather tasty auction lot…

———————————————————————————————————————–

This is a once in a lifetime chance to bid for a sensational pair of shoes belonging to David Bowie!!!!

The iconic superstar has donated this striking pair of white ankle boots which have been WORN and SIGNED by the man himself, making this a truly unique item.

Plus: These shoes come with a certificate of authenticity, which has also been signed by Mr. Bowie.

This a wonderful opportunity to get your hands (and your feet) on David’s boots while also helping MAG rid the world of landmines.

Put yourself in David Bowie’s shoes and Give Landmines The Boot!

———————————————————————————————————————–

Within only a couple of hours of DB’s boots going live on eBay, they are already attracting far more interest than the 58 other donated items. With a current high bid of £265 GBP (approx. $516 USD), that’s more than three times higher than the next bid of £82, yet still much lower than the price I’m sure they will eventually command.

I’ll leave you with a bit from the MAG Charity’s Mission Statement…

———————————————————————————————————————–

MAG is one of the worlds leading landmine clearance organisations, currently working in 13 countries world-wide including Sudan, Angola, Lebanon, Iraq and Vietnam.

We recruit and train local staff, create multi-skilled teams, provide emergency response, promote mine risk education and are one of the few mine action organisations in the world to recruit women and mine survivors as deminers.

*Actually, they’re boots, and they’re not that small either.

Happy Thanksgiving To All Our Friends In The Usa

Thanksgiving holiday. White House photo by Paul Morse.

So we asked a simple turkey, who was happy as can be…

Some BowieNet members may have noticed things are a little quieter than normal on the MBs today. Well, that’s most likely because a sizeable portion of the membership is currently enjoying Thanksgiving celebrations.

If you’re not celebrating for one reason or another, and you’re bored by the lack of company, go here to amuse yourself with a just-for-fun caption doo dah on the MBs.

In the spirit of Thanksgiving, I’ll be ‘missing’ from tomorrow until Monday. I don’t need much of an excuse. See you on the other side.

Listen To Mint This Sunday For Tv On The Radio

Don’t forget to keep your head warm…

Man of many silly faces, Marc Riley, (08.05.06 NEWS: WIN TONS OF GREAT BOWIE STUFF ON 6 MUSIC TODAY) has yet another new look to go with his new radio show, Brain Surgery.

I’m happy to quell the rumour that the beret (see above) and the title of the new show are connected, and, despite appearances, he’s not even gone Bohemian.

In fact, he has never made secret of his love for popular singing combo, Gene, and apparently the new headgear is an affectation inspired by the band’s lead singer, Martin Rossiter.

Anyway, that’s enough of that. As you’ve no doubt already gleaned from the above headline, Tony V is featured in the regular PRODUCER SPOTLIGHT section of MINT this coming Sunday.

Tony is not actually guesting on the show, and he hasn’t contributed anything new to it, but listen out for talk of David Bowie and at least one Bowie song that Tony plays bass on.

MINT is online and on DAB radio every week at the times indicated in the station ID above. Don’t fret if you miss the initial broadcast, as you can still listen online up until the following week’s instalment.

David, Iman And Lou Attend The Fountain Screening

Then later, a movie, too…

David Bowie and Iman attended a special screening of Darren Aronofsky‘s The Fountain at the Tribeca Grand in New York on Monday evening. As evidenced in the shot above, David met up with his good friend Lou Reed at the venue.

We first mentioned David Bowie in connection with The Fountain over a year and a half ago, (04.19.05 NEWS: BOWIE FOR WATCHMEN AND THE FOUNTAIN?) when it was mooted that he might write and record a new song for the film, but sadly this never materialised.

However, despite Aronofsky’s hopes that David would create another piece in the continuing saga of Major Tom, the hapless space traveller is still present in spirit. Here’s what Aronofsky had to say regarding the final third of the film: “The space stuff I think was influenced a little bit by Space Oddity by David Bowie and that’s probably why the character was named Tom.”

For those of you not familiar with the film’s plot, here’s the official Synopsis from Warner Bros. Pictures…

“The Fountain is an odyssey about one man’s eternal struggle to save the woman he loves. His epic journey begins in 16th-century Spain, where conquistador Tomas (Hugh Jackman) commences his search for the Fountain of Youth, the legendary entity believed to grant immortality.

As modern-day scientist Tommy Creo, he desperately struggles to find a cure for the cancer that is killing his beloved wife, Isabel (Rachel Weisz). Travelling through deep space as a 26th-century astronaut, Tom begins to grasp the mysteries that have consumed him for more than a millennium. The three stories converge into one truth, as the Thomas of all periods?warrior, scientist, and explorer?comes to terms with life, love, death and rebirth.”

The Fountain goes on general release on November 22nd in the US.

Bowie And Ronson The Icons Of Rock

“When we’re down on our knees…” Ronno and Ziggy, showing how it should be done!

Till there was rock, you only had God…

Classic Rock magazine in the UK celebrates it’s 100th issue with the December edition. Apart from various free gifts with the mag, the editors have decided to mark the occasion with a list they reckon contains the of 100 Icons of Rock.

Both David Bowie and Mick Ronson made the grade, with explanations regarding why they deserve the accolade from Rick Wakeman of Yes and Billy Duffy of The Cult respectively.

Here’s what they both had to say.

———————————————————————————————————-

David Bowie by Rick Wakeman

I was very fortunate to have worked as a session musician during four of the most productive years of music: 1968-1972. In that time I worked with some of the all-time greats such as Alice Cooper, T. Rex, Elton John and Cat Stevens, to name but a few.

Of all the people I worked with, though, one person stands out a mile: David Bowie. David was the consummate professional in every respect. I can honestly say that I learned so much from him, both in the studio and just through spending time with him.

He always knew what he wanted and would not be influenced by managers, record companies or, in fact, anybody whom he thought had not get genuine musical knowledge or ability. He was always under control in the studio, and knew how to get the best out of musicians.

For me, David could well go down in rock history as the man who not only sold the world, but also bought it back in order to give it the music he’d collected along the way.

———————————————————————————————————-

Mick Ronson by Billy Duffy

I think Mick Ronson’s contribution to rock’n’roll guitar playing can never be overestimated. He’s been a huge influence on my playing, in fact I use Les Pauls that are made to look like one of his guitars.

That period, when he played on David Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust, Aladdin Sane, Pin Ups, was fantastic. Bowie was cool, but I always wanted to be a guitar player, not a singer, so he was the guy I really liked.

That band, and those songs, and that whole era wouldn’t have been the same without Mick Ronson.

I recommend that guitar players listen to some of the live recordings of Bowie in 1972 and 1973, particularly the Santa Monica Civic show, to hear a guitar player who was not scared to play a bum note in search for the ultimate fuckin’ expression.

———————————————————————————————————-

Cool stuff, though one has to wonder if Rick had enjoyed some special herbs before he composed his concluding sentence! };-)

Db And Nokia's Music Recommenders In The Press

You’ve read it in the papers, and the tracks are online too…

The press in the UK are picking up on the fact that Nokia has enlisted the services of David Bowie for their Music Recommenders campaign. (11.14.2006 NEWS: DB REVIEWS AND INTERVIEW ON NOKIA MUSIC RECOMMENDERS)

You can read most of what the Evening Standard had to say about the campaign (and The Mail On Sunday who published the same feature) by clicking on the article on the right above. The item above left was a front-page teaser for a piece inside the Guardian’s Money section on Saturday, that went a little something like this…

———————————————————————————————————————-

Ringing the changes: Now for the rock?n?roll. Mobile phone giant Nokia has recruited David Bowie to promote its new online music download service called Music Recommenders. The Thin White Duke will be acting as the service?s musical ?godfather? and will be recommending tracks and acts via regular features and podcasts. The service is aimed at the music connoisseur rather than the casual listener.

Bowie has a pretty good track record when it comes to spotting the rock stars of tomorrow. Back in 1973, he was raving about a relatively unknown New Jersey rocker by the name of Bruce Springsteen, and more recently he was championing the band Arcade Fire before they became critics? darlings.

———————————————————————————————————————-

A pretty good track record, indeed! And don’t forget you can read further evidence of that immaculate taste on the Music Recommenders site.

Pulp Man Jarvis Does Bowie For Solo Show

“Planet Earth is blue…” As is Jarvis Cocker, too.

My mother said to get things done, You’d better not mess with Major Tom…

BowieNetter chipsandbakedbeans was present at Jarvis Cocker‘s debut London show at Koko in Camden on Wednesday evening. Here’s a bit from his message board post…

———————————————————————————————————-

Space Oddity was the final song in Jarvis’s, (formerly known as Jarvis Cocker, formerly lead singer of Pulp) set at Koko in Camden and was announced as an ‘old song’, so whilst for a minute the audience expected a Pulp song after an evening of songs from his new album, what he then added was that the song was Space Oddity.

The arrangement was true to the 1969 album version and featured ex-Pulp bassist Steve Mackay and Pulp live guitarist and solo person Richard Hawley on guitar, plus some other people on drums and keyboard. Jarvis delivered the song in a manner similar to Bowie, but managed to stamp his own personality in a more subtle way than I would have expected.

It went down very well with the audience coming straight after the anthemic new song C*nts Are Still Ruling The World which had proved to be a real singalong, crowd pleaser of a song.

It was nice to see that not only a good proportion of the people near me were singing along to Space Oddity, but to also see that the handclapping bit was picked up by the audience and rounded off the evening in an almost perfect way.

———————————————————————————————————-

Thanx for that Andy, let’s hope Jarvis decides to commit a studio version of that to tape (or hard disc) so we can all have a listen.

I had to break up the band…

A little after the event, this story, but still worth reporting.

As you know, musical stars of The Hunger, the re-reformed Bauhaus, had been performing their biggest hit single, a cover of David Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust throughout their summer tour. (07.06.2006 NEWS: FUTUREHEADS, RACONTEURS, BAUHAUS AND G’N’R DO DB)

Well, it seems the London audience for their second show at The Forum (back in August) were also treated to a solo version of The Bewlay Brothers performed alone by the group’s singer, Peter Murphy.

This followed a walk out by guitarist Daniel Ash when he encountered equipment trouble, and, by all accounts, stormed off, shortly followed by the rhythm section, to leave Pete alone onstage. Apparently The Thin Dark Duke refused to let the audience down and treated them to an “absolutely stunning” version of the classic Hunky Dory closer.

Shortly the whole band returned to the stage to perform T Rex‘s Telegram Sam and aforementioned Ziggy Stardust.

According to fans that had followed the tour, though twenty minutes shorter than the normal Bauhaus set, this impromptu performance by Pete made this one of the stand out shows of the summer.
