David, Iman And Lou Attend The Fountain Screening

Then later, a movie, too…

David Bowie and Iman attended a special screening of Darren Aronofsky‘s The Fountain at the Tribeca Grand in New York on Monday evening. As evidenced in the shot above, David met up with his good friend Lou Reed at the venue.

We first mentioned David Bowie in connection with The Fountain over a year and a half ago, (04.19.05 NEWS: BOWIE FOR WATCHMEN AND THE FOUNTAIN?) when it was mooted that he might write and record a new song for the film, but sadly this never materialised.

However, despite Aronofsky’s hopes that David would create another piece in the continuing saga of Major Tom, the hapless space traveller is still present in spirit. Here’s what Aronofsky had to say regarding the final third of the film: “The space stuff I think was influenced a little bit by Space Oddity by David Bowie and that’s probably why the character was named Tom.”

For those of you not familiar with the film’s plot, here’s the official Synopsis from Warner Bros. Pictures…

“The Fountain is an odyssey about one man’s eternal struggle to save the woman he loves. His epic journey begins in 16th-century Spain, where conquistador Tomas (Hugh Jackman) commences his search for the Fountain of Youth, the legendary entity believed to grant immortality.

As modern-day scientist Tommy Creo, he desperately struggles to find a cure for the cancer that is killing his beloved wife, Isabel (Rachel Weisz). Travelling through deep space as a 26th-century astronaut, Tom begins to grasp the mysteries that have consumed him for more than a millennium. The three stories converge into one truth, as the Thomas of all periods?warrior, scientist, and explorer?comes to terms with life, love, death and rebirth.”

The Fountain goes on general release on November 22nd in the US.
