War Child's Heroes Album More Details

And the guns, shot above our heads…

We posted initial details about War Child‘s “Heroes” album a week or so ago, (09.21.2008 NEWS: WAR CHILD’S “HEROES” ALBUM DUE NOVEMBER) when we had agreed not to announce who was covering David Bowie for the project just yet.

My fear at the time was that the information would be leaked with so many people involved in the project…and sure enough.

I guess many people may have worked out that the Bowie track would be “Heroes” considering the album title…but how many of you guessed that the quite brilliant TV On The Radio would be recording the track for the project? Can’t wait to hear this.

Meanwhile, we can boast a world exclusive with the John Squire created album cover above…pretty good ain’t it?

“Heroes” will be released through EMI?s Parlophone label on November 24th.

Earl Slick's The Eons Debut At Woodstock Film Fest

Friday on my mind…

Earl Slick has been in touch with details regarding a show this coming Friday at The Colony Café, Woodstock, New York as part of the Woodstock Film Festival.

It’s the debut of his latest combo, The Eons, which comprises primarily of Earl Slick with Saphin on vocals.

Slicky is proud to announce that he’ll be joined on stage by Gail Ann Dorsey, Sterling Campbell and Brian Bessette for this show, which kicks off at 9.30pm.

You can purchase tickets in advance here and you can have a look and listen to the band themselves on The Eons MySpace page.

7 Bowie Albums In Rarest 200 Uk Albums Of All Time

I could do with the money…

The November issue of Record Collector magazine has a feature on the 200 rarest UK albums of all time.

David Bowie has seven entries in the list, more than any other solo artist, and here they are with what the magazine reckons the current value to be…

#169 ~ David Bowie (Deram DML/SML 1007, mono/stereo) 1967 £300/£350
#126 ~ David Bowie (Philips SBL 7912, gatefold sleeve) 1969 £400
#112 ~ The Man Who Sold The World (Mercury 6338 041, dress sleeve) 1971 £450
#91 ~ Low (RCA INTS 5065, red vinyl custom pressing) 1977 £500
#91 ~ Station To Station (RCA APL1 1327, with proof sleeve of colour cover) 1976 £500
#72 ~ Scary Monsters (RCA BOW LP 2, purple vinyl) 1980 £600
#11 ~ BOWPROMO (RCA white label promo for Hunky Dory and Dana Gillespie) 1971 £1,500

Two of the items are of dubious legitimacy and I’m sure these prices will start some kind of debate among collectors.

I’ll be doing a feature on this item shortly to correct a few misconceptions regarding a few of the above.

Finally, I have had a few e-mails asking why I didn’t mention the October issue of Record Collector, above left.

Well, it was mainly on account of the fact that it wasn’t a particularly good piece on account of it having had a “flaming butcher job” done on it, according to the author of the piece.

However, if you can still pick it up it’s worth a read for the excellent Geoff MacCormack interview regarding From Station To Station.

Sound And Vision On The Box Again

The tracks are on TV…

Following on from the use of Sound And Vision in Radio 2s Amazing Music TV ad, (09.18.2008 NEWS: SOUND AND VISION USED IN BBC TV ADVERT MASH-UP) the song is on TV again in the UK plugging The Edge Of The Seventies triple CD, above, which includes the 1977 smash hit from Low…Mixed emotions here as I originally thought it might be a compilation of U2‘s teenage guitarist’s finest moments.

Out this week, The Edge Of The Seventies is joined by another triple CD, released concurrently, The Mix Tapes, which describes itself as ‘alternative music from the late 70s and 80s’.

This CD has the 1980 dancefloor-filler Fashion kicking off proceedings, as does Sound And Vision on the other compilation…makes a nice change from Queen always being the lead-off track on these things.

Barack Obama Hooked Up To Another Bowie Tune

And the shame, was on the other side…

There’s a bit of a clue above as to the nature of this one. It follows in the footsteps of an item we posted back in January, (01.22.2008 SNIPPET: DAVID BOWIE INSPIRES US PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES) and another last month. (07.24.2008 NEWS: BARACK OBAMA ENTERS TO THE SOUND OF BOWIE)

This clever little piece perpetuates the link between David Bowie’s music and Barack Obama even further….which is no bad thing.

Ziggy Outfit For British Music Experience Exhibition

If there was only something between us, Other than our clothes…

The David Bowie archive has loaned an outfit to The British Music Experience, a permanent exhibition dedicated to the history of popular music in Britain.

Described as “David Bowie’s iconic Ziggy Stardust outfit” in news reports, we can confirm that it will actually be one of several early outfits that were made by Freddie Burretti.

The British Music Experience exhibition will open at London’s O2 Arena on the banks of the River Thames early in 2009 and it is the brainchild of music promoter Harvey Goldsmith.

You can read more about the project here.

Writing On The Edge By Jérôme Soligny

“WRITING ON THE EDGE”

Le Havre, in the early 1970s. Every month, Jérôme Soligny would buy Rock&Folk, Best and Extra from the corner newsagent?s uptown with his pocket money. And the teenager, who, as a child, had fallen into the magic potion of rock and pop would make sure to pinch at least two of those from another shop for displays on his bedroom walls. 2008; Jérôme and his family still live on the music he has loved for over forty years.

Jérôme Soligny is a musician, author, biographer, poet, translator and editorial adviser with Rock&Folk. He regularly writes about most of his favorite musicians. Through a solid prologue and forty nine chapters dealing with forty nine major rock figures with the complete text of Rock&Folk articles examined from a new viewpoint in an often vivid introduction, “Writing on the Edge” tells theOdyssey”?Philippe Man?uvre?s description of Jérôme Soligny?s career in the preface of “The history of Rock&Folk”? of the author, an avid reader of the rock press gone through the glazed paper and of the rockers that impressed him.

The book is illustrated by the author and his wife, Sophie, also a journalist and enriched with exclusive declarations by friends, either artists referred to in the articles (David Bowie, Paul McCartney, Bryan Ferry, Iggy Pop, Neil Tennant or Brett Anderson) or journalists, musicians and anonymous readers of all generations whose lives were influenced by these articles.

“Writing on the Edge” would certainly be the book of a lifetime if Jérôme Soligny had not opted for several lives.

“Jérôme is a guy who is still aware that popular music is an art form

and not a money suppository.  He writes from the heart

and is one of the last exemplars of a dying breed.

The critic, armed with intelligence and brute compulsive honesty,

as dangerous as a river.”

Iggy Pop

Jerome Soligny Book Due Before End Of The Year

Written in pain, written in awe…

Our jolly good friend and all round tophole chap, Jérôme Soligny, will be publishing Writing On The Edge before the end of the year.

In the book Jérôme talks about his career as a rock journalist with a particular slant towards his years at the hugely successful French magazine, Rock&Folk.

Naturally there will be a chapter concerning David Bowie, not to mention the collection of colourful characters who produced the music that Jérôme has loved for over forty years.

On account of the fact that Jérôme is held in such high regard by these people, many of the artists have contributed a few words for the book, among them the bloke on the cover, above.

You can read the press release in the BowieNet press release section and stay tuned for more details over the coming weeks.

Finally, I’ll leave you with a link to one of Jérôme’s own recordings, I’m Moving On, proving that he’s not just a pretty face.

See if you can spot (with your ears) who the pianist might be on the track…and if that whets your appetite, you can listen to some even better stuff on Jérôme’s myspace page.

Live 73 Db Shot In Abba…zappa Photo Book

I’d send my photograph to my honey…

Dutch photographer, Gijsbert Hanekroot, has a book of his rock photography available about now.

It’s called Abba…Zappa and it features a full page of the above Bowie shot. You can find out more about it here.

Thanx to BowieNetter 051060 for the pointer.
