Manish Boys Photo Spread In The Word Magazine

With your long blond hair and your eyes of blue…

The February 2009 issue of The Word has the above double page spread regarding the rumpus caused by the length of the young Davy Jones‘ hair in 1965.

While it wouldn’t be fair to reproduce the whole article here with the magazine only just being published, I’m sure you’re all familiar with the story of The Manish Boys‘ public quarrel with Barry Langford, producer of Gadzooks! It’s All Happening anyway.

Langford had insisted that Jones have his hair trimmed before he would be allowed to appear on Gadzooks! to perform I Pity The Fool with his band of merry Manish Boys, to which the handsome young heart-throb retorted: “I wouldn’t have my hair cut for the prime minister, let alone the BBC.”

Check out The Word for the whole article which is a timely and fitting tribute to the late Les Conn. (12.19.2008 NEWS: LES CONN R.I.P.)

Conn apparently played a large part in setting up this stunt along with DB’s first known television interview on the BBC’s Tonight show the previous November, on which he bemoaned the hard time he had been having to Cliff Michelmore and how this had led to the formation of ‘The Prevention Of Cruelty To Long Haired Men’.

You can see that interview here.
