Lemon Heroes Issue Put Back To Next Month

Lemon’s nearly in the bag…

We’ve mentioned the upcomg issue #4 of LEMON on here a couple of times, (05.08.2008 NEWS: SNEAK PREVIEW OF LEMON’S HEROES ISSUE & 09.11.2008 NEWS: DB CONTRIBUTES EXCLUSIVE ARTWORK TO LEMON #4) and though it seems to have been a protracted labour, it’s looking more and more like it will have been well worth the wait.

Here’s the blurb from the official LEMON site regarding this Bowie special…

———————————————————————————————————————–

A lad insane, a rebel?s rebel – if it broke new ground, chances are good that David Bowie got there first. Lemon?s latest masquerade party dons the makeup of pop culture?s greatest shape shifter and our prototypical Hero.

Lemon 4 features exclusive contributions from David Bowie himself, Daft Punk, Buzz Aldrin, John Hurt, Iggy Pop, Justice, Kim Hiorthoy, Keanan Duffty, Slinky Vagabond, Battles, Brian Finke, These New Puritans, Rex Ray, Niho Kozuru, Guido Vitti, Dimitri Daniloff and much more. Brought to you by World Enterprises.

———————————————————————————————————————–

Meanwhile, editor-in-chief, Kevin Grady, has an online portfolio of his work up and running and it includes a few bits from the Bowie issue.

Stay tuned for more details shortly, including news of a contest to win signed-by-Bowie copies of the magazine.

Moon To Premiere At Sundance Later This Month

Here am I sitting in a tin can…

The February 2009 issue of film magazine Empire in the UK has a 2-page spread on Duncan Jones‘ film Moon with the news that it will premiere at this year’s Sundance Film Festival within the next fortnight.

This news was also mentioned in today’s Independent in the UK and it’s confirmed on the official Sundance site.

There will be four screenings commencing Friday January 23rd and apparently Duncan is scheduled to speak about the film on Sunday, January 18th, at Sundance House.

Check out the Moon page on the Sundance site for screening details, a brief Duncan Jones biog and a description of the film.

Also, take a look at this page on www.bloody-disgusting.com for a whole bunch of quite beautiful stills from the film.

As of yet, there is no news on a general release date for Moon other than “later this year”.

Happy Birthday David Bowie

And he could have had a Cadillac, If the school had taught him right…

Many happy returns of the day to David Bowie on his 62nd birthday from everybody here at BowieNet.

Good to see that school teachers in the UK are being reminded of this important date.

My wife is a teacher and above is today’s entry from her official school planner/diary that is apparently supplied to teachers throughout the land and runs from June through to the next year’s July for obvious reasons.

I guess it would be considered inappropriate to celebrate the birth of an American singer in UK schools, (sorry Elvis) but it’s also good to see that education authorities consider David Bowie’s birth more important than the likes of Professor Stephen Hawking, to name but one other of the many luminaries born on January 8th.

Thanx to BowieNetter bruneva for being the first to start a birthday thread on the MBs which has now become THE STICKY DAVID BOWIE BIRTHDAY THREAD where members can post their own birthday greetings to David if they haven’t already done so.

Hope you have a most enjoyable day, David, filled with love, fun and loads of whatyamacallits.

Stay tuned for the final part of our five-part contest later today which is for a signed item that David Bowie actually owned!

Win David Bowie's Signed Lyric Folder

A couple of songs from your old scrapbook…

And so on to the last of our five contests to win a signed Bowie item, as promised in the birthday news item below.

As you can see from the pictures here it’s one of those folding A4 folders with the elasticised bits and DAVID BOWIE USED TO KEEP HIS LYRICS IN IT!

David signed it and kindly sent it in for a random contest in 2007 and now seems about the right time to have that contest.

I seem to remember something about him using it in the late 70s early 80s but I will double check and I’ll report back if that’s not the case.

Below is the signature that appears on the inside of the binder which I think reads “best wishes Bo 2007” – I will double check with him, etc.

Now, what do you have to do to be in with a chance of winning…well, as you might think, an item as special as this needs to be earned.

So, considering it used to contain David Bowie’s lyric sheets I thought an appropriate task would be for you to tell us how many songs David Bowie has written.

To make things easier and indeed clearer, we only want you to include songs that are credited solely to Bowie, in other words, no co-written numbers.

Also, every song you include must have been officially released and it must be a studio recording…no live songs.

Only include each song once when it has the same title. For example, there are a few released versions of Space Oddity, but you only need to count it as one song. When you think you have arrived at an accurate calculation, send that number to me here before midnight NY time on Friday January 30th.

We’ve given you a bit longer than usual as this could be a bit of a toughie for some of you. All of the entries that are within 25 of the correct answer will be put in the hat and the winner will be announced here on February 1st.

Usual BowieNet rules apply: Only one entry per BowieNet account per week, and please remember you must enter using your BowieNet e-mail or at least supply your BowieNet user name. If you do neither of these things you won’t be eligible to enter.

Good Luck, kidz…wish I could enter this one actually.

Singalonga Labyrinth In New York On Friday

Singing old songs we loved…

This is your chance to join in with 71 other nutters and sing along with the songs that populate the film Labyrinth.

Here’s a bit from the 92YTribeca site

———————————————————————————————————————–

Put on your spandex and practice your crystal ball juggling ? it is time for the Labyrinth sing-along!

David Bowie and Jennifer Connelly star along with some homely Muppets, taking us through a maze of upside down staircases and talking door-knockers. Beer will help you to admit that you know the words to the songs.

Date & Time: Fri, Jan 9, 2009, 11:00pm
Location: 92YTribeca, 200 Hudson Street Directions
Venue: 92YTribeca Screening Room
Code: T-MM5FJ04-01
Price: $13.00 ticket includes one beer.

———————————————————————————————————————–

It all looks like being too much fun. But, I have to say, the one complimentary beer probably wouldn’t be quite enough to get me to loosen up my vocal chords…unless of course local boy Bowie turns up for a post-birthday party and leads off the singing!

Three-day Bowie Birthday Bash In Italy

Thursday’s Child…

Daniele, organiser of the annual Bowie Bash in Bassano del Grappa, Italy, has been in touch with details of the 11th event which is a three-day extravaganza kicking off on David Bowie’s birthday.

Over to you Daniele…

————————————————————————————————————–

The Bowie Bash has reached its 11th year, and, we must admit that describing it in just a few words can be quite difficult.

Throughout the years we had around 8,000 people among them passionate Bowie fans and admirers coming to Bassano del Grappa to pay homage to Ziggy, the White Duke and the Dandy, spend a pleasant evening in the name of this seminal artist and find new friends during such an unusual and eclectic celebration. Many Italians artists joined our Bowie celebrations during the last eleven years, from Bluvertigo to ex Frigidaire Tango, from Super Sexy Boys to Mastica, the ever popular Piol with his acoustic sets and Jazz Jam Session, while we also organised record fairs and photographic exhibitions such as the one by Philippe Auliac, and launched the book Passenger (published by Sound & Vision Edizioni), a volume dedicated to one of the most interesting but also one of the darkest periods of Bowies career, the Thin White Duke days.

From 8th January 2009, three clubs are going to host different events: at the Rockaffè di Castelcucco (TV) Piol will present his acoustic set followed by a DJ set, while clubbers will also be able to eat and drink tasty delicacies especially made for this celebration, such as the ZiggyCake and the SpaceOddity cocktail. On 9th January at the Cacao America Bar in Crespano del Grappa (TV), Piol will entertain us with a special piano session, but there is also going to be a chance of watching rare video sessions and enjoying amazing DJ sets. Art lovers will definitely enjoy the photographic exhibition of the Thin White Duke days taken from the book Passenger which is opening on 12th December. On 10th January the closing party Lets Glam at the Shindy Club will round it all off in style: Piol will delight us with a wonderful performance! A final reminder: during the party at the Shindy a make up artist will be able to recreate for you the glammest and most Space Oddity style looks! We have what it takes to make sure you spend an amazing three days with us, so loose your inhibitions and join the Bowie Bash now! Peace & Bowie 2009

Thanks, Daniele (Sound & Vision Magazine)

Thank you Daniele. Those of you interested in attending can find more details by checking out the official site here.

Peellaert's Bowie Paintings Plus Kevin Cann Remembers

The paintings are all your own…

Back in November when we reported the death of artist Guy Peellaert we promised a post that showed the paintings he had created of interest to you the David Bowie fan…and here is that post.

First up was the front cover of Rock Dreams. The first editions of the book didn’t include Bowie, but reprints issued from 1973 considered this relative newcomer already worthy of a spot next to Presley, Lennon, Dylan and Jagger, above.

A wonderful portrait of Lou Reed and David Bowie appeared inside, see below.

On the strength of his Rock Dreams paintings, Bowie commissioned Guy to produce the cover of the 1974 RCA Diamond Dogs album with the controversial dog’s genitalia sleeve, below, which was quickly withdrawn for the offending parts to be airbrushed out before the record hit stores.

However, it seems a version of the artwork, below, (which predates the above RCA sleeve) had less obvious parts at this point. One wonders if the male member was added mischievously. If it was, it was a masterstroke as the sleeve couldn’t have got any more publicity.

Or perhaps it was just that Bowie felt he had had enough female comparisons for one career by 1974. Also note that the original artwork has ALIVE instead of Bowie.

Post-RCA versions of the sleeve reinstated the hound’s chap, but if you’re currently holding an RCA cover with the cock in your hands, it’s worth many times more than one with a bush. Which may be the origin of the saying: “A bird in the…etc.” (Sorry, couldn’t resist.)

Around the same time as the Diamond Dogs sleeve was painted, Guy also made the painting below which was only ever made available as a poster through the official fan club along with a poster of the censored front cover.

Both of the fan club posters, which each measure 39″ x 22″, turn up on eBay from time to time. But, on the rare occasions that they do these days, they command very high prices. Particularly when one considers that the set would have cost you just $5 plus shipping back in 1974!

Rumour has it that the ‘leaping dog’ painting was originally intended for the inside gatefold sleeve of Diamond Dogs.

Guy didn’t do another Bowie painting until he was commissioned for the Bowie At The Beeb cover in 2000. Below is a very limited edition promotional print signed by Guy and DB, of which I believe there were only ten copies produced…that’s one you won’t find on eBay!

I should point out that the large signatures on these works are for reasons of copyright and don’t actually appear on the original artworks.

I’ll leave you with a short bit from Bowie chronologist Kevin Cann who recalls working with Guy on Bowie At The Beeb

———————————————————————————————————————–

Working with Guy on Bowie at The Beeb was one of the highlights of recent years for me. I was a great admirer of Rock Dreams and of course the amazing Diamond Dogs sleeve, which was a brilliant collaboration between David and Guy. In the late 90s he brought out 20th-Century Dreams, with text again by Nik Cohn, and it got me thinking.

I wrote to him on the off chance when I was roughing out ideas for Bowie at The Beeb and was thrilled when he called almost straight away. He said he would do the new cover artwork “because of the history”.

I?ll never forget his studio near the Bastille in Paris. If you are interested in art and design it was a bit of a Mecca, I couldn?t get enough of it. He had a massive library of photos and images that he had collected for 50 odd years, carefully filed in these huge leather-bound, numbered volumes all around the studio and in the basement. These files were partly the resources used for his collages. That afternoon he took me to his favourite local cafe and over lunch told me about working with Scorsese on the Taxi Driver poster, like it was yesterday. He was still excited about that commission, perhaps more than anything else he had done.

He threw himself into the Bowie at The Beeb work with great enthusiasm and we had lots of fun messing about with different ideas until we settled on the final concept. I?ve never seen anyone able to manipulate images the way Guy did. He was a massive talent and a very nice man too. He spoke with the broadest French accent ever, though I know he was Belgian.

The last time we spoke was about a year ago. He called to ask if I knew how to find Kate Moss as he had an idea for a picture. I could feel that same excitement of another new idea brewing.

———————————————————————————————————————–

Thanx Kevin, and thanx to Mr Peellaert for some beautiful work and for one of the very best Bowie album covers of all time.

Manish Boys Photo Spread In The Word Magazine

With your long blond hair and your eyes of blue…

The February 2009 issue of The Word has the above double page spread regarding the rumpus caused by the length of the young Davy Jones‘ hair in 1965.

While it wouldn’t be fair to reproduce the whole article here with the magazine only just being published, I’m sure you’re all familiar with the story of The Manish Boys‘ public quarrel with Barry Langford, producer of Gadzooks! It’s All Happening anyway.

Langford had insisted that Jones have his hair trimmed before he would be allowed to appear on Gadzooks! to perform I Pity The Fool with his band of merry Manish Boys, to which the handsome young heart-throb retorted: “I wouldn’t have my hair cut for the prime minister, let alone the BBC.”

Check out The Word for the whole article which is a timely and fitting tribute to the late Les Conn. (12.19.2008 NEWS: LES CONN R.I.P.)

Conn apparently played a large part in setting up this stunt along with DB’s first known television interview on the BBC’s Tonight show the previous November, on which he bemoaned the hard time he had been having to Cliff Michelmore and how this had led to the formation of ‘The Prevention Of Cruelty To Long Haired Men’.

You can see that interview here.

War Child's 'heroes' Album Put Back To February

And the guns, shot above our heads…

The War Child “Heroes” album that we’ve been telling you about, (09.21.2008 NEWS: WAR CHILD’S “HEROES” ALBUM DUE NOVEMBER & 09.30.2008 NEWS: WAR CHILD’S “HEROES” ALBUM MORE DETAILS) has been put back due to overwhelming interest from other artists keen to be involved.

As mentioned in previous news items, TV On The Radio have covered David Bowie’s “Heroes” for the project.

The album also includes musical contributions from Scissor Sisters, Duffy, Elbow, Hot Chip, Beck, Rufus Wainwright and The Kooks.

U2, The Clash, Sir Paul McCartney, Bob Dylan, Brian Wilson, The Kinks and Joy Division are among the artists who have chosen tracks of their own to be covered.

The 15-track CD will now be released through EMI?s Parlophone label on February 16th with the final tracklisting being announced shortly.
