Uk Press Deny Kelly's Hero

Stories they made up…

The headline “Kelly Jones unimpressed with Bowie” caught my eye in a couple of recent UK news reports, particularly as I had the impression that the opposite was true.

So, without flavouring his opinion further with my reportage of it, here’s exactly what the Stereophonics‘ front man had to say regarding his time on the road with David Bowie in 2004…

———————————————————————————————————————–

“I wasn’t starstruck because Bowie wasn’t my idol. But I realised he was one of the only artists of any generation I’ve ever seen that’s still going forward.

“He’s not still harping on about some album he made in 1975.

“I thought it was amazing how somebody could still want to push themselves as an artist. That to me was a massive inspiration.”

———————————————————————————————————————–

Doesn’t sound like he was unimpressed to me…in fact, it took Scotland’s Glasgow Daily Record to report it straight, with the headline: Kelly’s Inspired.

Those of you wondering about the relevance of the picture above, well it’s of the moment that Kelly Jones had reason to feel anything approaching something negative about David Bowie.

The shot was taken at the moment a football trophy was lowered above The Stereophonics as they played a support set in Columbus back in May 2004.

The trophy was awarded to DRJ Dynamo in recognition of their absolute trouncing of Aberdare Athletico in a game of football, (or soccer as some would have it) the previous day.

Bandslam Will Rock On

BandSlam! So it wasn’t a game…

Today’s headline isn’t a statement, it’s a list of names that the film which started out as Will has had to date.

We first told you about David Bowie’s cameo in Todd Graff‘s movie in March last year, (03.23.2008 NEWS: AUGUST PIC FOR…ERM…MARCH – PLUS WILL UPDATE) when DB described his brief appearance in the film as: “a ten second scene of absolute silence”.

Will was re-titled Rock On, but it’s since changed to Bandslam which is most likely what it will remain for it’s theatrical release in the US at the end of July.

If you missed them originally, you can check out a couple of on-set pix of DB in this news story: 04.02.2008 NEWS: EXCLUSIVE BOWIE PIX FROM WILL CAMEO…HONEST GUV!

Ziggy Stardust Mixed Up, Mashed And Mgmt'd

Really quite paradise…

I was alerted to the above recording via a Google alert yesterday, as I’m sure many of you reading this were too. The alert pointed to a piece on www.prefixmag.com that said this…

———————————————————————————————————————–

ATOM, A plus D, World Famous Audio Hacker, ToToM, and dj BC have remixed and mashed-up David Bowie’s classic The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars album.

You can stream the music and watch a couple videos produced for the occasion by VJ Brewski and AJ ‘Hatperson’ Mazur online on the Ziggy Remixed website.

The results? Well, it’s a mixed bag. I could do without the mashup of “Stardust Kids,” which employs Bowie’s vocals and the music from MGMT’s “Kids.” And I suppose it depends what kind of Bowie fan you are. If you are a purist, you might want to consider ignoring this blog post altogether. However, if you are a little more open-minded, check out DJ BC’s “Sufferin’ Remix” of “Suffraggette City.” Gold dust on the disco floor brilliant.

———————————————————————————————————————–

I was saddened to read the low opinion of Stardust Kids as I rated the MGMT album one of the very best of 2008, not to mention its attendant singles…Kids being one of them.

I hopped over to the Ziggy Remixed website and thought I’d make up my own mind about Stardust Kids. It was the first track I listened to and I spent the rest of yesterday listening to that track alone…The reviewer at prefixmag can’t have been using all their ears. I think Stardust Kids is genius, mashing Kids with Lady Stardust in an exciting and convincing slice of pure pop magic.

When I finally got around to listening to the rest of the album it was pleasing to note that there were many good ideas on it. But, I have to say I don’t think anything else comes close to Stardust Kids.

Anyway, my opinion is no more valid than prefixmag’s, so it’s best you go and make up your own mind.

Mr Sane In This Week's Time Out Taxi Driver Toon

Ahhh, wham bam thank you Ma’am!

Well, all the information you need is above if you want to find out what happens in John Riordan’s excellent William Blake, Taxi driver cartoon strip in this week’s Time Out London magazine.

I’ve deleted the last two frames as it wouldn’t be fair on Time Out to give you the hilarious conclusion here for free while this issue is still on sale. Sorry.

Martin Richardson Exhibition In London Next Week

Sons of the silent age, Pace their rooms like a cell’s dimensions…

I’m sure the image above will remind you exactly who Martin Richardson is…if you even need a reminder that is.

We have posted a fair few news stories on these pages regarding his Bowie holograms, from 08.03.2005 NEWS: HOLOGRAM EXHIBITION TO INCLUDE 3D BOWIE IMAGES to 12.22.2006 NEWS: LAST CHANCE TO SEE GIANT BOWIE HOLOGRAMS and tons of items in-between.

Anyway, below is the blurb for Martin’s latest exhibition which is called DIMENSIONED and will include an improved quality print of the above Bowie hologram and much of his recent work.

The exhibition is free and BowieNetters are invited to attend either of the private views mentioned below. This is fascinating stuff that these chaps are working on and it’s worth a visit regardless of any Bowie content.

RECENT WORK by MARTIN RICHARDSON and PAUL SCATTERGOOD – FEBRUARY 12 ? 28 2009

Private Views: Thursday February 12th, 6.30 ? 8.30pm, and Sunday February 15th, 12.00 ? 3.00pm, with viewing by appointment at other times at GALLERY 286 286 EARL?S COURT ROAD LONDON SW5 9AST: 020 7370 2239 E: jross@gallery286.com

Holography is set to enter a new era as digital technology enables a far-wider range of practitioners to create full colour holographic images from 3D animations and video material.

Martin Richardson, the first artist to gain a PhD in fine art holography at the Royal College of Art in 1988, is currently professor of Modern Holography at De Montfort University, Leicester and continues to push the boundaries of the holographic arts with his students there. One of these was Paul Scattergood, recently transferred to the RCA himself and, together with Martin, showing new work at Gallery 286, the only place in England you can depend on finding the latest holographic developments.

The exhibition consists of full-colour animated digital holographic stereograms, figurative in the case of Richardson, abstract in Scattergood’s, along with lenticular images and large format paintings from another aspect of Scattergood’s practice.

Preview the show at www.gallery286.com

If you do go along to either of the private views tell ’em we sent you and you may get a free glass or two of wine just for being a BowieNetter.

David Bowie's Signed Lyric Folder Winner

Hallo Space_Girl…

Admittedly this isn’t the easiest contest we’ve set, (01.08.2009 NEWS: WIN DAVID BOWIE’S SIGNED LYRIC FOLDER) but enough people still entered to make me realise just how desirable David Bowie’s old lyric folder is!

This was your task…

———————————————————————————————————————–

Tell us how many songs David Bowie has written.

To make things easier and indeed clearer, we only want you to include songs that are credited solely to Bowie, in other words, no co-written numbers.

Also, every song you include must have been officially released and it must be a studio recording…no live songs.

Only include each song once when it has the same title. For example, there are a few released versions of Space Oddity, but you only need to count it as one song.

———————————————————————————————————————–

OK, this did create a few queries, which were generally answered in the original question…for example: “Should we include songs written by Jones?”. Sorry folx, no. We only wanted you to include songs that are ‘credited solely to Bowie’.

“Should we include acetates and the like?” Again, no. Every song you included must have been ‘officially released’.

And finally, “Should we include songs recorded by other artists?”. If they were officially released and credited solely to Bowie, then yes.

We then put all of the entries that were within 25 of the correct answer (which we estimated to be around 230) into the hat, and the name of the Lass Insane above was plucked from its depths…it’s a big hat.

And her name? It be Space_Girl.

So please send details of your habitat on Earth, Space_Girl, and we’ll have your magnificent hi-tech space age lyric folder prize thingy to you shortly.
