Described as a “thinking man’s Bridge on the River Kwai,” Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence is probably Oshima’s best-known film in the United states.

Two rock icons star as arch-enemies in a WWII POW camp in Java. David Bowie plays an imprisoned major and Ryuichi Sakamoto is the fanatical commandant increasingly fixated on his blond prisoner. Sakamoto also created the film’s hypnotically spare music track. (122 mins., 35mm)
