Described as a “thinking man’s Bridge on the River Kwai,” Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence is probably Oshima’s best-known film in the United states.

Two rock icons star as arch-enemies in a WWII POW camp in Java. David Bowie plays an imprisoned major and Ryuichi Sakamoto is the fanatical commandant increasingly fixated on his blond prisoner. Sakamoto also created the film’s hypnotically spare music track. (122 mins., 35mm)

Bowie Predicted Spotify And The Like Seven Years Ago

Looking For Water…

A recent piece on arcticstartup.com recalled a 2002 David Bowie interview with The New York Times in which he foresaw the arrival of the likes of Spotify with his observations that ”music itself is going to become like running water or electricity”.

I remember feeling decidedly uncomfortable with his predictions at the time, primarily because it suggested the end of the system most of us have enjoyed since our teenage years…whatever our ages.

As I sit here listening to music via Spotify (It’s bloody convenient) I realise the inevitability of those predictions, but take some small comfort in the belief that there will always be some kind of cottage industry for well-made specialist items along the lines of recent releases by Radiohead, NIN and David Byrne & Bryan Eno at least.

I’m sure the sale of music will continue to evolve for a long time to come and it’s hard to imagine now that sheet music was the most important ‘format’ when it came to selling music all those years ago.

I’ll leave you with the relevant bit from that New York Times article. It’s incredible to note just how accurate DB’s predictions were…

———————————————————————————————————————–

His deal with Sony is a short-term one while he gets his label started and watches the Internet’s effect on careers. ”I don’t even know why I would want to be on a label in a few years, because I don’t think it’s going to work by labels and by distribution systems in the same way,” he said. ”The absolute transformation of everything that we ever thought about music will take place within 10 years, and nothing is going to be able to stop it. I see absolutely no point in pretending that it’s not going to happen. I’m fully confident that copyright, for instance, will no longer exist in 10 years, and authorship and intellectual property is in for such a bashing.”

”Music itself is going to become like running water or electricity,” he added. ”So it’s like, just take advantage of these last few years because none of this is ever going to happen again. You’d better be prepared for doing a lot of touring because that’s really the only unique situation that’s going to be left. It’s terribly exciting. But on the other hand it doesn’t matter if you think it’s exciting or not; it’s what’s going to happen.”

Orange Hair? Asks Lexi…whatever Next

People stared at the make-up on his face…(Well, not everybody)

Parade magazine has published a new Iman interview with Kevin Sessums from which this priceless snippet…

————————————————————————————————————-

Was it difficult raising another baby so much later in life?

?The difference between rearing a child in your 20s and one in your 50s is one of patience,? Iman says. ?I was at the height of my career when I had my first child, and I took her with me around the world. Then I had to root her in school. It was difficult to leave her behind. Now this one thinks she has it tough because both her old parents are at home with her all the time. When Lexi was about 4, she first saw a picture of David as Ziggy Stardust [one of Bowie?s flamboyant stage personas]. ?Why is his hair orange?? she wanted to know.? Iman laughs. ?The makeup didn?t faze her.

?David certainly has more of a sense of humor than the first man I married,? Iman continues. ?With David, it?s a cabaret from morning to night. We can talk about literally anything?from fashion to religion.?

————————————————————————————————————-

Lol…well Lexi has a few more surprises to come if she hasn’t already seen them…from her father’s 1964 TV appearance on the BBC Tonight programme as the founder of The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Long-haired Men right up to his Fashion Rocks performance of Life On Mars? 41 years later. Boy, he’s got some explaining to do!

Iggy Pop Remembers Working With Bowie In The Word

I’m moved, man, I’m wigged…

The June issue of The Word magazine has a six-page cover feature and interview with Iggy Pop by Roy Wilkinson.

Inevitably, the subject gets around to David Bowie and below are just two excerpts from the piece, the first regarding the recording of Lust For Life and how easily Bowie could bash out a few classic swhen the mood took him…

If Iggy’s observations are accurate, I reckon that (using a process of elimination) the following five songs must be the ones he’s referring to: Some Weird Sin, Tonight, Success, Neighbourhood Threat and Fall In Love With Me. Not bad for five hours work!

Obviously I’m not posting all of the Bowie content here, you’ll have to buy The Word to read the rest, but I’ll leave you with Iggy’s comment on the Bowie/Pop collaborations generally and his own favourite of the songs they recorded together.

Madman Issue #15 Finally On The Shelves

Who will love Madman Sane…

We first told you about this one back in July of last year, (11.07.2008 NEWS: MR SANE MAKES COVER OF MADMAN COMIC) when we were informed that issue #15 of MADMAN comic was due for publication on New Year’s Eve.

Well it finally surfaced at the end of last month and that’s it above. And, apart from what you can see above, the Bowie connection is not particularly apparent.

However, as I’m sure you comic fans are well aware, MADMAN is drawn by Mike Allred who has never hidden his love of David Bowie’s music.

Pictured above are just two spreads from a total of seven pages of Bowie story stuff seen through the eyes of Mike Allred in chapter 7 (entitled: Put Your RayGun To My Head) of issue #4 of Red Rocket 7 originally published in 1997.

Thanx to BowieNetters dumdumboy and Lord Of The Things for the pointers.

Your Chance To Paint A Bowie Album Cover

We’re painting his faces…

Following on from last year’s Sleeveface fad, (02.13.2008 NEWS: BOWIE COVERS PROVE POPULAR ON SLEEVEFACE.COM & 11.18.2008 NEWS: BOWIE QUOTATION ON SLEEVFACE BOOK) Paint My Album looks set to capture the imaginations of budding Microsoft Paint users everywhere.

Featured last week on www.NME.com, www.paintmyalbum.net already has well over a thousand contributions, but the creators of the site have ambitions way beyond that. Here’s the blurb…

———————————————————————————————————————–

Diarmuid and Anthony like redoing classic album covers using Microsoft Paint. They started on their own in Manchester, then set up a facebook group as a bit of a joke.

Now they want 2,000 covers redone by 23rd December 2009. They desperately need your help.

Send your MS Paint album covers to paintmyalbum@gmail.com and find ‘Let’s redo classic album covers using Microsoft Paint’ on facebook.

———————————————————————————————————————–

For the record, the three Bowie sleeves at the top of this piece were created by the following: Hunky Dory by Clay McCuistion from Concord, NH, The Singles Collection by Stacy James from London and Aladdin Sane by Tim Warre.

If you get one of your creations in to the gallery, let us know and we’ll feature it here. Whose going to be brave enough to attempt Diamond Dogs?

Finally, Last Lot Of Signed Rebel Rebel Winners

Commencing countdown…Lift off!

Oops…this one should have gone live on April 27th, but I neglected to hit the live button…I wondered why the last few winners hadn’t claimed yet.

So, following bruneva‘s post on the MBs yesterday enquiring after the last winners, I realised my error…or can I say we at BowieNet realised the error, just to distance myself from this dumb mistake a little?

Looking on the positive side, and in a Schrödinger’s cat type of way, at least non-winners have been able to cling to the hope that they still might win up to this point!
