Spotlight On Station To Station In Clash Magazine

Does my face show some kind of glow?

Issue 58 of CLASH magazine has a full-page (and a bit) by Gareth James on Station To Station in their regular classic album spotlight feature.

I don’t think there’s an online version of the article, but I’ll leave you with an excerpt to tide you over until you can get your mitts on the magazine.

Geldof On Bowie's Live Aid Generosity At Mojo Online

We Are Publicity Hungry Men…

The advert above from the current issue (February 2011) of MOJO magazine pretty well says it all. But here’s the relevant Bowie bit from Bob’s interview in case you’re disinclined to read the full thing.

What lessons did you learn from Live Aid that you applied to Live 8?

There was no correlation. Put it in purely financial terms. Live Aid: 150 million. Live 8: 50 billion, per annum. But Live Aid had the ‘give me your fuckin’ money’ moment. And Bowie introducing the famine film. I showed that film to David at Harvey Goldsmith’s about 7.30 at night. Let’s remember for a minute that Bowie is an absolute God. I got to know him when I was a kid. I hitch-hiked to see him in Belgium on the Station To Station tour, told him I was in a band and showed him pictures of the Rats. I blagged backstage and he was so nice. Don’t forget he launched Band Aid pre-Top Of The Pops, he wore this lame T-shirt, Feed The World, looked like a doofus. But he’s the sweetest man. You just never think about David Bowie like that.

We showed him the film, famine footage cut to the Cars’ song Drive. He sat there in tears and said, ‘Right, I’m giving up a song.’ I said, ‘Hang on…’ I didn’t want David Bowie giving up a fucking song. I mean, hello? But of course he was right. That was the moment that people said, Fuck everything, take whatever you want from me.

Drive-In Saturday…

Several Bowie-themed events are taking place on David’s 64th birthday, this coming Saturday the 8th…here’s the ones we’ve been told about…in no particular order…

First up, David Brighton’s Space Oddity (that’s him above) will be performing a free tribute at 8:00pm at the Pala Casino in Pala, California. Read more about it here.

Next up, Echo Bowie

This much-loved Dutch outfit kick of a seven date tour of their homeland on January 8th. Keep an eye on echobowie.com and echobowie.nl for updates on the tour, and click on the image above for a flavour of the boys in action.

BowieNetter Daniele Pensavalle has been in touch with details of an annual Italian Bowie Bash…

Again, click on the image above to find out all you need to know about the 13th BOWIE BASH @ SHINDY CLUB (Bassano del Grappa ? VI).

Finally, we’ll leave you with a free to enter French affair also taking place on the 8th, as all of these events are.

Click on the tasty flyer above for more details regarding this one.

I’m sure many of the other tribute bands are doing something to celebrate DB’s 64th, but if you want a plug here you need to send in details, preferably with online links…hurry though, not long to go.

Scary Monsters Single Released Thirty Years Ago

She opened strange doors that we’d never close again…

January 2nd 1981 saw the release of an edited version of the glorious Britpop-blueprint title track from the Scary Monsters LP in the UK, Germany and France.

It was the third single from the album in each of the territories and the release of the track on the brand new cassette single format (now defunct) probably helped it scrape into the top 20 in the UK.

Pictured above are the German 12″ Super-Sound-Single, top left, the front and back of the UK 7″ and the front of the UK cassette single, bottom right…Please note, these items are not to scale!

The B-side was Because You’re Young in the UK and Germany and Up The Hill Backwards in France.

The latter song became the fourth A-side from the album in the UK and Germany a couple of months later…but that’s another news item.

The Voyeur Website, Revamped And Re-launched

The Voyeur Of Utter Construction (As Beauty)…

It’s been a long time since I heard from Peter Smit, especially considering how regularly he used to inform me of the latest issue of The Voyeur fanzine.

Well he’s been in touch once again to tell us that fans of the publication (which folded in July 2008) may be pleased to learn that they can now view every issue online on the re-launched and revamped Voyeur website. Here’s a bit from Peter…

———————————————————————————————————————–

Visitors to the new site can read fanclub magazines (full screen) from the December 2001 issue until the last issue, published in July 2008. There is also an archive of interviews with Bowie-related artists such as, Earl Slick, Gail Ann Dorsey, George Underwood and George Simms, among others.

This David Bowie website is a fan-to-fan website. Registered fans can publish David Bowie (related) news and videos. By letting registered fans publish their own news and videos we think we add a unique website to the existing David Bowie fansites.

Celebrate The New Year With A Signed 2011 Calendar

(St)Art Decade…

Hope you all had a good break and aren’t suffering too much today from pre-new-year’s-day-celebration after effects…or, what I call, a hangover.

Anyway, what better way to kick off the new decade than with the chance to win a an official 2011 calendar sporting a brand new 2011 Bowie signature?

As you know, the official 2011 David Bowie calendar was compiled from several sessions taken by Brian Ward. Here’s an excerpt from the blurb on the back cover to remind you…

———————————————————————————————————————–

The fourteen images of David Bowie contained within this calendar were taken from several sessions with photographer Brian Ward at his London studio over a period of less than a year in 1971 and 1972.

These sessions provided iconic images for three album covers: Hunky Dory at the close of 1971 and both The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars and the RCA reissue of The Man Who Sold The World in 1972.

Several picture sleeve 45s around the globe and an astonishing collection of press adverts and promotional material that blitzed the world?s media throughout 1972 were also sourced from these sessions.

———————————————————————————————————————–

Here’s what you have to do to be in with a chance of winning…

As mentioned in the blurb, “an astonishing collection of press adverts” were created in late 1971 through to early March 1973 that utilised pictures from these sessions.

In the above animation I have selected just eight of those adverts which appeared in the UK, US and Japanese music press during this period.

However, one of the eight is a fake that I mocked up just for this contest. I’m not saying if I created the whole thing or just a part of an already existing advert. The other seven are exactly as they appeared at the time…aside from the white letter in the red circle of course.

You’ve guessed your task…Once you’ve identified the fake advert send the corresponding letter to me here. (You need to log in for the link to work)

You have a couple of weeks to enter as the contest closes on Saturday January 15th at midnight, New York time.

Usual BowieNet rules apply: Only one entry per BowieNet account and please remember you must enter using your BowieNet e-mail or at least supply your BowieNet user name. If you do neither of these things you won’t be eligible to enter.

Good Luck and Happy New Year, kidz!
