Japanese Space Oddity 45 Sets All-time Auction High

You’ve really made the grade…

An extremely rare Japanese promo of the Philips Space Oddity/Wild Eyed Boy From Freecloud 45 has sold at auction in Japan for a staggering 2,113,100 JPY, which translates to approximately 26,119.50 USD or 15,794.22 GBP! (That’s Yen, American dollars and British quids in case you’re wondering.) And it didn’t even have the inner generic Philips bag. How mental is that?

The seven-day auction which ran from April 13th to 20th took place on the Yahoo! Japan auction site, which may have actually narrowed the audience to some degree. Who knows what it might have fetched had it been listed on eBay.com.

Originally released in January 1970, surely this forty-one-year-old 7″ is now a contender for the most expensive commercially released single of all time, albeit a promo.

I think the previous record was the withdrawn Sex PistolsGod Save The Queen on A&M for £12,675 GBP. Please let us know if you contest this theory.

Thanx to BowieNetter AsianBowie for the pointer to the original Yahoo! Japan auction, which you can view here.
