G4 Life On Mars Digi-single Out Now

Oh man! Look at those cavemen go, It’s the freakiest show…

The popular X Factor vocal quartet, G4, release their version of David Bowie’s Life On Mars? as a download only single today.

The track is taken from the group’s self-titled debut album, which also contains a cover version of My Way. Anybody who knows the history of Life On Mars? will no doubt see the irony in that.

The song is one of the most covered of Bowie tracks with at least 40 recordings existing. G4‘s version follows in the footsteps of other vocal groups’ attempts at the song, such as, Manhattan Transfer and The King Singers.

Of course, those aren’t the only artists to have murdered the Hunky Dory classic, Anni-Frid Lyngstad did her best, and when asked by Cameron Crowe in the infamous September 1976 PlayBoy interview how he felt about Barbra Streisand‘s 1974 version, DB himself famously responded thus: “Bloody awful. Sorry, Barb, but it was atrocious.”

The balance has been somewhat redressed in recent years with covers of Life On Mars? by the likes of The Flaming Lips, The Eurythmics, The Divine Comedy and Frank Sidebottom!

Anyway, fans of G4 who missed the band’s performance of the song on cd:uk yesterday, will be relieved to learn that the show is repeated on Thursday night/Friday morning on ITV in the UK at 1:55am.

STOP PRESS: G4 will also perform Life On Mars? live on ITV’s This Morning programme in the UK on Tuesday morning.
