Boston Globe’s Boston.com ran an article that basically outlined the current state of the music industry, and weighed the effects of cutting-edge software products like the infamous Napster, BowieNet was mentioned as an example of a site that has taken advantage of all of the benefits that the new technology offers.
“The music industry is trying to protect its turf and curtail progress; at the same time, artists deserve to be paid. ‘If the recording industry wins, we lose the huge social advantages,’ says Harvard Law School professor William Fisher. ‘But if the recording industry loses, artists’ rights are eroded.’”
“…artists would release their music files online in an unprotected format, offering certain services (such as advance concert tickets) to honest fans who pay as they play. David Bowie has mastered the concept at www.davidbowie.com, which offers users everything from Internet service to CDs (as in compact disc and certificates of deposit).”
