Exactly one quarter of a century ago David Bowie unleashed his latest single upon an unsuspecting world. The title track from the album that was to follow in March, ‘Young Americans‘ was the greatest shock yet for the Bowie fan who had followed David since the birth of Ziggy. This new sound, which Bowie coined his ‘plastic soul’ phase, was a huge departure from the previous year’s ‘Diamond Dogs‘, even though there were hints of what was to come via songs like the string-driven thing that was ‘1984

Movie channel FilmFour is having a Bowie Back-to-Back Day with ‘Velvet Goldmine‘ on 28 Feb 00 at 2200 hours followed by ‘Ziggy Stardust – The Movie‘ at 0005 hours.

Here is what they said about Ziggy:

“A moment in rock history ? David Bowie is caught in concert at the Hammersmith Odeon, 1973, in one of his farewell dates in the guise of Ziggy Stardust. All the classics are there, from Oh You Pretty Things to All The Young Dudes.”

Back in October there was a Bowie fan party in London between the TFI Friday and NetAid DB appearances and loads of bnetters from across the world attended. A site had been created about the event brimming with photos and journals of the party plus TFI Friday and NetAid. The site URL is:

Rock Style

The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City is hosting a special Rock N’ Roll/Fashion exhibit running from December 9, 1999 ? March 19, 2000

Here is what they had to say about our leader in the ways of both Rock and Style, Mr. DB:

“Superstars defined by their ability to hold a crowd in their sway appear in the third gallery, ‘Brilliant Disguise.’ Superstars have had a definitive impact on the creation of fashion fads and trends. David Bowie’s character of Ziggy Stardust, along with the Spiders from Mars, unleashed a fashion genie that never retreated. By the early seventies, it was not enough to go onstage and just play music. Sound, lights, choreography, and, later, video became key elements of the concert experience. A performer’s dress, designed as an integral part of a concert experience, can mesmerize an audience…”
