Bowie On Bravo

Don’t forget that tomorrow night at 8:00 p.m. EST, Bravo will air the film The Last Temptation of Christ.

Directed by Martin Scorsese, David Bowie plays the part of Pontius Pilate in this critically acclaimed masterpiece.

Willem Dafoe, Barbara Hershey and Harvey Keitel star in Martin Scorsese’s thought-provoking adaptation of Nikos Kazantzakis’ controversial novel.

Bravo will re-air this movie again at 1:30 am EST.

See 'lady' Strangled Tonight!

B>He’ll lay belief on you…

Of course that headline was meant in the nicest possible way as Paul Roberts, lead singer with The Stranglers, intends to perform his version of ‘Lady Grinning Soul’ tonight at The Monarch in London’s ‘place to be’, Camden Town. You may remember that Paul included the song on his recent album ‘Faith’, and a very good version it is too.

So if you’re kicking around North London tonight, pop along and give the man your support and tell him we sent you. For further details about tonight’s show go here: http://www.paul.roberts.cwc.net/070400.html

‘hours…’ The Bible

Superfans Alex Alexander and Pete Foulstone have compiled their follow up to Outside The Ultimate Guide with the 64-page A4 fanzine ‘hours…’ The Definitive Guide. A true labour of love, this photocopied publication is an excellent document covering the promotional work that was undertaken by David for the ‘hours…’ campaign last year. Produced in an incredibly limited edition of just 100 copies, the guide is black and white but has a colour-copied cover with a montage of relevant magazine covers on the reverse.

Packed with rare pictures, tickets, set-lists and bootlegs from every show, TV and radio appearance from last year’s mini-tour (the cheeky bootleggers have even nicked one of my photos for ‘The Twentieth Century Dies’, (a bootleg of the Copenhagen show) perhaps in revenge for ‘Blam’s Little Spot’?) ‘hours…’ The Definitive Guide manages to present the facts without ever being too fussy. If I have any minor reservations it would be that while there is a contents page, the pages themselves aren’t actually numbered, and the photographs aren’t captioned.

In an anecdote that the boys recount from the Jools Holland recording; “…David spotted someone he knew and greeted them with the middle finger salute, which raised a few laughs…” Well I was the lucky recipient of that ‘salute’, and I duly returned the compliment with a flicked V and a barrage of choice expletives…Rock ‘n’ Roll eh!…

Further details are available from Alex, if any copies remain of course.

Bowienet On The Move

As you may or may not know, BowieNet is in the process of moving our site to a new server. Our new upgraded network will allow us the flexibility to improve our services, as well as get prepare for the re-launch of the site (BowieNet v.2)

In the next few days, members might experience some unusual technical difficulties. Right now, we are working on 2 main issues: Microsoft ComicChat 2.5 client and our BowieNet UK members logins.

BowieNet UK MEMBERS
Due to the network change, our UK members will experience difficulty entering the site today. We are working on this problem and hope to have it rectified by the end of the day.

Microsoft ComicChat 2.5 client
The chat program that many of our members use to connect to the BowieNet chat room is having difficulty connecting to our new chat server. Not to worry. While we get this problem fixed, you can (temporarily) connect to the chat servers via the new java chat room.

When you log into the chatroom, you have 2 choices, BowieNet Chat and Technical Support. If you need to chat to someone about a technical issue, try it out.

Several members have found that MS ComicChat is the only chat client causing difficulty. You may want to consider downloading an alternative to MS ComicChat. Here are some IRC software you might want to try: mIRC (PC’s) and Ircle (Macs). We will be posting information about how to best connect ASAP.

If you are still having trouble please contact us via email support@davidbowie.com or call our tech support crew at 1-888-STAR-999 or (1-631-218-9090 outside US).

We are currently working on solutions for both of these technical issues.

TECHNICAL FUN:
On the fun side, last night in the chatroom, our new technical support team did some really cool “development on the fly”. The request was made for a larger chat window, and master tech Chip went to work and had it up and running in 5 minutes flat! Links to these new chat interfaces, plus tips on some of the cool features, like playing sound effects can be found on the Chat help page in the Discourse section.

American Psycho Ost Release Delayed

Hip to be where?

The release of the American Psycho soundtrack due on 4th April on Koch Records has been put back until April 14th because of legal reasons surrounding the Huey Lewis and the News’ track ‘Hip To Be Square’. Personally I feel that the song should have been outlawed in the first place, but that’s neither here nor there, and it’s removal from the soundtrack now means that the CD contains just fourteen tracks of which the third is the 6:01 Mark Plati Remix of ‘Something In The Air’.

Of course regular readers of ‘Blam’s Little Spot’ (put back this week btw, due to work on the new site) will know that this sort of thing is wonderful for us collectors, and while I realise that the inclusion of the song is purely a reference to the irony of the chapter about Mr Lewis and his friends in the book, I never thought I would be scouring my local CD emporium for a copy of the soundtrack with the aforementioned Huey track!

Bowienet On The Move – The Next Day

Just a quick update on the server migration. As of 5:00 p.m. EST yesterday, all BowieNet UK members have their access to the site once again.

As for the Microsoft ComicChat 2.5 client, we are getting closer, but still no definitive yes or no as to weather we will continue to use this chat client or not.

If you are having any trouble at all with the site, please contact us via email at support@davidbowie.com or call our tech support crew at 1-888-STAR-999 or (1-631-218-9090 outside US).

Bowie Does Beatnik

That’s right. Beatnik unveiled this ad in yesterdays Billboard to announce a new partnership with BowieNet.

As you know from the past, BowieNet and Beatnik presented the world premiere of the Beatnik Player 2.0 with the launch of the Fame ReMix project.

In the coming weeks, keep your eyes out for yet another project with Beatnik, including the complete “sonification” of the new BowieNet v2.

Chris Haskett (formally of the Rollins Band) is working together with BowieNet, putting a web-score together for the soon to be launched site (expected in May, 2000).

Until then, keep your eyes open for the next project from Beatnik and BowieNet.

Sonicnet Feature Bowie The Innovator

SonicNet are running a feature centring on the cyber innovations that David has been at the head of over the last couple of years.

From the 50th birthday performance broadcast over the Internet to the present day, SonicNet reports that Bowie is still looking for new ways to combine technology and music.

While you are there check out the ARTISTS INFO panel that includes a biography, a discography, audio clips and, by far the silliest, a ‘similar artists’ section which lists just one band. The name of that band, who I have to admit are very similar to Bowie, is…wait for it…Tin Machine!!! Future entries could include Ziggy Stardust and The Spiders From Mars, The Lower Third and The Mannish Boys among others.

Click on the logo above to take you right there.
