Black Box Recorder

The band Black Box Recorder have included their cover of David Bowie’s ‘Rock ?N? Roll Suicide‘ on CD one of ‘The Art Of Driving‘. The track, which the trio claim to be “the best song ever written”, was recorded last month for BBC Radio One’s Evening Session and is a constant feature of their live set.

Baby Shower Alternative

In lieu of bringing gifts for Iman and David’s baby-on-the-way, the expecting couple would prefer donations be made to their favorite cause, Save The Children!

Here is a bit of info from Teenage Wildlife about how this idea came to be:

About 10 days ago, fan Terri Stiffler wrote in to suggest that the upcoming New York concerts would be a good venue for fans who wanted to donate gifts for Iman and David’s imminent addition to the family. After some detective work and phone calls by Terri to the Roseland Ballroom, the head of promotions at Roseland called back yesterday with the following message:

“After checking with David Bowie’s management, we were informed that Iman is requesting that in lieu of bringing baby presents for her and David, if people would instead make donations to Save The Children, which is one of the many charitable organizations that she feels very strongly about that she is directly working with.”

There are many options to donate money or assist in other ways at the Save The Children website. Alternatively, you can make purchases via the Greater Good list of online stores with a guaranteed 5% of your cost being donated directly to Save The Children. Ed: Thanks to Terri for her idea and follow up on this cause.

Whatever Happened To Ziggy Hero?

Bowie On The Piste Again?

No he isn’t actually. The image above is a detail from one of the Bowie related publications mentioned in the ‘Icon To Icon’ article from The Independent. The book by Harland Miller brilliantly entitled ‘Slow Down Arthur, Stick To Thirty’ and published by 4thEstate should be in the shops (over here in the UK at least) now.

The title is cribbed from some dialogue between T J Newton and his driver in ‘The Man Who Fell To Earth’, and though I haven’t had the chance to read it yet myself, this is what singer of Pulp and Bowie fan, Jarvis Cocker, had to say about it: ‘Right up my strasse: thoroughly inappropriate behaviour in an urban setting. The shittier the circumstances, the bigger the dream. Smashing.

Click on the image above for a brief synopsis, and go to the 4thEstate web site for more details.

The Independent Celebrates Bowie The Icon

The culture section of the most recent Independent On Sunday had as its front page the article above entitled Icon To Icon. Inspired by recent Bowie related publications, Philip Hoare explores what would seem to be a popular topic at the moment; “…the role of style leaders and their followers in history, art and fiction…”, and he asks; “will this special relationship survive into the digital age?”

Following Wayne Hemmingway’s lead on The Big Breakfast just last week, (“…(Bowie) shows what we’re missing today…all the pop stars are manufactured.”) Philip manages to capture the feeling of belonging to something special, (“a club for which you had to have the right references”) perhaps best summed up here: “Such was Bowie’s effect on a generation; like Wilde, like Warhol, Bowie was as important for what he represented as for what he did – surely one of the functions of an icon: to instigate a cult.” and “Bowie knew what he was doing, as did Oscar Wilde, and Vaslav Nijinsky.”

Thanks again David for giving Bowie fans a reason and the confidence to wear a smug ‘we-knew-along’ grin.

Ziggy B-day

28 years ago today “The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and The Spiders From Mars” was released to the world! Here is a bit from the Ziggy Stardust Companion:

Happy 28th Birthday Ziggy Stardust! As noted in January – this year mirrors 1972 exactly – so today (6 June 2000) is a Tuesday just like it was in 1972 – and exactly 28 years to the day since the album was released back on 6 June 1972! Note: It was not released on 9 June 1972 which has mistakenly crept into some new books on David Bowie.

Q And Select Magazine On The Stands

Two UK magazines have David Bowie on their front cover this month. Select has a rather strange-looking weather-proofed Bowie looking like something from the mother ship in Close Encounters’…This is to illustrate their coverage of Glastonbury, which while it is interesting, isn’t exactly over-burdened with Bowie-related features.

The July issue of Q magazine on the other hand, has the David Bowie ‘Cash For Questions’ feature that I know you have all been waiting for. Packed with pictures over a generous six pages, including a couple of very recent shots where the Bowie tresses are under a little more control than they are in the picture above. David’s answers are absolutely hilarious, but the fun is punctuated with some serious stuff and a few misconceptions are cleared up.

Did he answer your question? I’m afraid you’ll have to buy a copy to find out. We hope to bring you the full thing once the magazine is no longer available for sale, along with even more pictures from the session. Elsewhere in the mag there is a Moby interview with a cool picture of David and the self-confessed Bowie fan. As you probably know, David was among the very first to call upon Moby’s extraordinary knob-twiddling skills. Go out and buy your copy now!
