Drop The Debt!!!

Today is the day!! The G7 conference is today, so if you have 3 spare seconds (because that’s all it takes), go to DropTheDebt.org and help the cause of the poorest nations in the world! They are fighting an uphill battle against the richest nations, so they need everyone’s support! Here is more on today’s events, and the goal of the Drop The Debt and Jubilee 2000 campaigns.

July 21 – Net the Debt Day

In 1998 and 1999, Jubilee 2000 held massive, peaceful human chains around the meetings of the G7, over 50,000 people calling on the G7 leaders to drop the debt. This year the world leaders have found an island hideaway ? far from anywhere in Okinawa, Japan, to try and escape from Jubilee 2000’s demands. So this time, we will surround them on-line, linking up in a virtual human chain around the world which the leaders cannot ignore. On this site, you can link up with what’s happening in Okinawa and the leaders’ response to your campaigning. We are going to invite Bill Clinton and his G7 colleagues to come on this site on July 21, and tell you what they are going to do to drop the debt.

Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence On Dvd

This release of the powerful wartime drama by Nagisa Oshima is in original ratio format and includes bonus features (a theatrical trailer and photo gallery of production stills and deleted scene stills).

Badder Than The Original?

That’s up to YOU to figure out! An album of cover songs released in Austria has two DB tunes!!

The cover versions of “China Girl” by The James and “Starman” by Philip Boa appear on an Austrian sampler called “Badder Than The Original“. Although the title remains a point to discuss with the Bowie tracks, it is still an interesting compilation of well known songs covered by an unlikley set of artists such as The King (“Under The Bridge” originally by Red Hot Chili Peppers), Him (“Wicked Game” by Chris Isaac), Molotov (Queens “Bohemian Rhapsody” retitled “Rap Soda Y Bohemia”), Coal Chamber (“Shock The Monkey” by Peter Gabriel) and Nick Cave & Shane McGowan (“What A Wonderful World” by Louis Armstrong). Further more U2 took on “Everlasting Love” written by Robert Knight and covered by a lot of acts, but the version probably best know ist the one by Love Affair.

The James’ version of “China Girl” first appeared on their “Sit Down – Remix”-single, which was released on December 14th 1998. “Starman” was the only “new” track on Philip Boas singles collection entitled “Fine Art On Silver”, which was released on February 3rd 1997.

Album Release And Exclusive Online Event – Bowie At The Beeb

New York, NY – July 21, 2000 – September 2000 will witness the release of a very special Limited Edition 3CD set chronicling rock legend David Bowie’s sessions at the BBC from 1968 to 1972.

In a groundbreaking on line first David Bowie has also announced that a track from this new BBC sessions package will be mixed with the help of his fans in a real time event broadcast over the Internet . On July 31st fans can log on to BowieNet (www.davidbowie.com) to select their favourite version of a track that will appear on the album.

The first two CD1s in the 3cd set are taken from BBC shows from 68-72 include rare performances of classics such as Ziggy Stardust, Starman and Space Oddity. The 3rd CD in this Limited package, will exclusively feature classic tracks and live favourites performed at the already legendary BBC Radio Theatre show this Summer following David’s triumphant return to this years Glastonbury festival where he undoubtedly stole the show.

Later in the year a 2 CD package to replace the 3cd set will be released comprising only of the 1968 1972 sessions which will also be available as a 4 LP Vinyl Limited Edition set including two bonus tracks not included on any of the CD’s.

The Limited edition 3CD set, includes tracks taken from such BBC shows as Top Gear, Sounds Of The 70’s (both presented by whispering Bob Harris) and In Concert (presented by John Peel).

The tracks from the 1968 Top Gear session have not been heard or even bootlegged since the day they were first broadcast, one track was never even aired! The tape for this particular session was supplied by David himself as the BBC had lost the original masters!

The Sunday Show tracks have been the subject of legendary bootlegging but always in very poor quality. This session was historic for the fact that it was the first time that David and Mick Ronson performed live together having literally met only days before.

The Sound Of The 70’s session tapes also include the first, and only, early Bowie BBC session recordings in stereo. It is also a valuable historical record because of the rare performances by David just accompanied by Mick Ronson.

The In Concert session (recorded June 1971) feature many of David’s friends and on the track It Ain’t Easy, Bowie shares the vocal duties with old school friend’s George Underwood (the man responsible for several of Bowies early album covers) and Warren Peace.

The cover of the album has been compiled and treated by Guy Peellaert who was responsible for the Diamond Dogs sleeve.

The exclusive 3rd CD was recorded at the BBC Radio Theatre on June 27th 2000 to an audience of specially invited fans and guests. It includes such classics as Ashes To Ashes, Fame, Cracked Actor and Let’s Dance alongside rarely performed fan favourites such as Wild Is The Wind, This Is Not America, Always Crashing In The Same Car and I’m Afraid Of Americans.
