Speaking of Mojo, MOJO COLLECTIONS (a magazine which knows very well which artists have the most avid collectors) features a section describing the most collectable records in music’s history. Fifty items are selected spanning the period from 1933 to 2000. Their choice for 1971 is that most covetable of items, The Man Who Sold The World “dress” cover. This cover was recently the subject of an in-depth analysis in Blam’s Little Spot. As well as being highly covetable, it is also often faked!
The magazine quotes it as fetching £200, but Ebay has often seen far higher prices than that!
“At a time when ‘camp’ was where Boy Scouts spent their summer holidays,…Bowie sought…his share of the limelight by packaging his third album with a cover photo in which he unashamedly wore a dress – “a man’s dress”, he hastened to add.”
Thanks, Spaceface!
