Keeping Up With The Joneses Part Two

Ever-Circling Skeletal* Family…

Here it is, the second part of Sindymmm’s and Blammo’s new publishing venture, HALLO! Click on the image of pages two and three above to take you to a larger version and a wholly more enjoyable viewing experience. Sindymmm turned down all sorts of offers for these pictures, just so we could enjoy them for free. Tune in this time tomorrow for the third instalment.

*OK, so Alex isn’t skeletal, what do you expect, she’s a baby for goodness sake. But David and Iman you have to admit, have never really had to worry too much about extra poundage.

Lost Hallo!* Baby Alex Session Rescued

To be right in that photograph…

You may remember a story earlier in the month about a publication produced by BowieNetter Alex Alexander (01/04/01 NEWS: A GOOD YEAR FOR THE POSES) in which I mentioned (not too favourably…gulp) a free Bowie Doll supplement. Well, after taking a second look at the black and white photocopied creation, I could see there were actually some rather charming pictures screaming through the greyness, demanding to be seen in all their original full colour glory.

I contacted the photographer of the pictures, Sindymmm, and after apologising for my earlier comments, managed to persuade her that the world should see her work. She gracefully sent me the shots, and in keeping with the spirit of how she had set the pictures up, I designed a HELLO! spoof and used the session as an eight-page bonsai version called HALLO!

Above is the front cover which you can click on for a larger printable version if you so wish. We will be posting the rest of HALLO! over the course of this week. Well done Sindymmm and thanx to Alex for bringing the pictures to the public eye in the first place.

*With apologies to HELLO!

Nme Rock Hacks Love Db

I’m just about the best you can hear

Inspired by the UK release of ‘Almost Famous’, a film about the early career of rock journalist Cameron Crowe, this week’s NME ran a spread of several pages on the career highs and lows of some of its most famous writers.

Two of the writers chose their interviews with David as their most memorable ‘good’ moment.

Steven Wells (left – 1983 – present) – “David Bowie was very, very nice. If a bit scruffy.”

Charles Shaar Murray (right – 1972 – 86) – “Good – the first time I interviewed Bowie, right at the beginning of the Ziggy era.”

Lucky, lucky things…….

Thanks, Spaceface!

Bowie To Work With Ian Mcculloch Mystery

My White Devil…

As much as David Bowie admires the work of Ian McCulloch and Echo & The Bunnymen, recent reports that he is to contribute to a new McCulloch solo project aren’t true. While Mac has made no secret of the fact that this admiration is mutual, the source of the rumour remains a mystery.

Last Chance To See David And Iman

You just look Finer*

The Painting the Century exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery in London closes next Sunday February 4th. (see: 10/18/00 NEWS: ART DECADE…WELL MONTH ACTUALLY ) Apart from Stephen Finer’s portrait; ‘David Bowie and Iman’ (you may remember Stephen also painted a portrait of David in 1994), the exhibition is well worth a visit for many of the other 100 portraits on display, some of which are quite breathtaking.

Here follows a small excerpt from the book of the exhibition which has a full page reproduction of ‘David Bowie and Iman’ and a page of text about Finer’s portraits of David:

“…Would we look at the painting in a different way if we didn’t know who they were? The fact that these questions cannot be answered confers a kind of privacy on the subjects, allowing them to remain hermetic, to preserve their identities both as individuals and as a couple, while at the same time giving the artist unlimited licence to work wonders with his paint.”

David Bowie and Iman, 1995 by Stephen Finer

If you do manage to get along to the exhibition you will most likely want to check out the shop too. Apart from postcards of Mick Rock’s Ziggy shot that was used for the Rock Style exhibition and Stephen Finer’s portrait of David Bowie, there are some items left over from the Snowdon exhibition including a large 2001 calendar and a pack of notecards that use the stunning photograph of David below, taken by Snowdon in 1978 on the front.

David Bowie, 1978 by Snowdon

*OK, I know it’s an Iggy Pop lyric, but David co-wrote the song, so ner, ner, ner, ner, ner.
