Art Against Addiction

I’ve had my share, I’ll help you with the pain

Sotheby’s is proud to present a unique online event: a charity auction of works by contemporary artists from around the world in aid of Action on Addiction. Founded in 1989, Action on Addiction is the UK’s only charity dedicated to the researching, education and treatment of addictions, whether it be drugs, nicotine, alcohol or tranquillisers.

The Art against Addiction committee, headed by David Bowie and Martin Maloney, has encouraged many eminent artists to create and donate new works loosely based on the theme of addiction.

The works will be on view in Sotheby’s Bond Street Galleries in London on February 14 and 15. You can also view all the lots online, here.

David has been invited to attend the reception.

Thanks, Spaceface!

Hair Is The News

And the papers want to know whose shirts you wear…

The newspapers here in the UK have picked up on the TV reports that Spaceface mentioned in the news a couple of days ago, (02/06/01 NEWS: DAVID AND IMAN AT ‘HANNIBAL’ PREMIERE) regarding David and Iman’s appearance at the Ziegfeld Theatre in New York for the première of ‘Hannibal’ on Monday night. Following the London Evening Standard’s front page colour photograph on Tuesday, Monday morning saw pieces in The Daily Telegraph, The Mirror, The Daily Star and The Daily Record.

Good to see that David’s hair is still a national obsession here, one that has endured for close on thirty years. The Daily Star however, decided that his teeth were of more interest, when in a misinformed piece they described them as “his sparkling new gnashers” which they went on to guess cost him a “reputed £20,000”. Bowie At Three Places In Uk Chart?

Just playing that latest record…

The release this week of the BBC tie-in double CD of the TV show ‘I Love The 80s’, looks set to put a third double CD compilation that contains Bowie music into the UK chart. The sublime ‘Ashes To Ashes’ kicks off the set, making it a tough act for the other artists to follow, and track fourteen of the second disc is ‘Absolute Beginners’. For your diary, this week’s instalment of the program (Sat 10th Feb, BBC2 21:05 – 22:35 GMT, 90 mins) focuses on 1983, and will surely document what must have been Bowie’s most commercially successful year.

The two other compilations currently in the chart are: ‘Top of the Pops 2 – 70’s Rock’, another BBC tie-in which was released on January 15th and contains ‘The Jean Genie’, and ‘The Greatest Number 1 Singles’, released a week earlier on David’s birthday, containing ‘Space Oddity’. Personally, I like to think that the success of these compilations is down to the astute compiler who decided to include these undisputed Bowie classics. };-)

Blood & Glitter – By Mick Rock

GLAM: AN EYEWITNESS ACCOUNT

The trendy Proud Galleries, London salutes one of the most celebrated music photographers of the last 30 years with an new exhibition Blood & Glitter which coincides with the publication of a book of the same name. It features many of his best known photographs and the forewords are by Bowie himself.

As we all know Mick was not an outsider looking in on the `Glam` rock movement, he lived it! The exhibition forms the most comprehensive eyewitness account of the 70`s musical revolution. It`s not just about the images of the Glam icons that we once wanted to imitate, but the subversive stories and figures around these music legends.

Space Oddity Performance

And there’s nothing I can do…

The February edition of Record Collector magazine has a piece about David Bowie’s performance of Space Oddity for a Top Of The Pops broadcast on October 9th 1969. Here are a few words from the piece written by Keith Badman:

“…David Bowie – clutching a Rolf Harris Stylophone and backed by the 20-piece Top Of The Pops orchestra – Performed a version of “Space Oddity”, currently at No.20 in the charts. Joining Bowie and the orchestra in the clip (which was taped a week earlier on Thursday 2nd October at Lime Grove), was the three-piece Ladybirds singing group, comprising Margaret Streckler, Gloria George and Marian Davies.

With Bowie’s clip taped in black-and-white, and Top Of The Pops set to become colour in seven weeks, there was little chance of excessive repeat screenings. After just one further airing, the tape was wiped – most probably to record a future ‘colour’ TOTP insert. I’ve said this over and over again, but …yet another piece of classic TV history gone forever.”

It would seem that nothing survives from the broadcast, not even a photograph. Something else that hasn’t survived these past 30 years is David’s own recollection of the taping. But, while David can remember absolutely NOTHING about this event, he concedes that that is not necessarily evidence of this broadcast not having taken place! In a feeble attempt to console you all after having posted such bad news, and using the most tenuous link I can imagine, the item above is a particularly rare European picture sleeve of the record that caused all the fuss in the first place.
