At the 51st Berlin International Film Festival last month, the film Intimacy by Patrice Chereau won the Golden Berlin Bear Award. The film features two songs by David – The Motel and Candidate. Being a big fan of the book, David gladly agreed to let these songs be used in the film.
Ziggy Firm Favourite With Radio 1 Stars
These are your favourite things, When you’re a boy…
As I skimmed through the pages of The Guardian review section this morning I very nearly choked on my coco pops, for there in glorious technocolour was a large picture of those handsome* maniacs Mark and Lard. The feature attempts to track down the recordings that the two lads enjoyed in their youth and that they feel remain special in their adult lives. Here is the first paragraph from the piece:
Luckily, Radio 1’s only double-act DJs share similar musical tastes. Especially about David Bowie. “I remember seeing Bowie doing Starman on telly at 20 past four on a Thursday afternoon,” says Marc Riley (aka Lard, at right in the picture above), “and it changed my life. I thought, ‘I don’t know what this is, but I want some of it.'”
The pair go onto discuss the physical dangers of being a Bowie fan among the “tough kids at school” and specifically being clobbered by a Slade fan. Both DJs brought in Ziggy Stardust to put on their lists and other albums that really made the grade were; Kraftwerk’s ‘Trans-Europe Express’, ‘Marquee Moon’ by Television, Captain Beefheart’s ‘Clear Spot’ and even releases by Dr Feelgood and Genesis.
Pick up a copy of the article if you get a chance, it’s a jolly funny read…and thanks to Mark and Lard for continuing to fly the flag!

Mr Rice: Why Rent When You Can Win?
…Actually the majority of you have seen ‘Mr Rice’s Secret’ (aka ‘Exhuming Mr Rice’) via satellite or scratchy third-generation copies from some European friend or other. Well the film will finally be available to rent in the UK from April 9th (through Odyssey Video Rental) and possibly sooner in other parts of Europe, but it won’t be available to buy for a further two months until it goes on sale in July. So only another five months or so to go then…Unless, of course, you are one of twenty BowieNetters who are about to win a copy.
Yes that’s right, the selfless and incredibly generous BowieNetter (and talented poet to boot), Russell Phillips, has donated twenty copies of this enchanting film to BowieNet, when he could have just knocked ’em out at his local car-boot sale over the weekend for a tidy profit. What a diamond geezer. These copies are instant collector’s item preview versions in VHS PAL format with a timecode running across the top.
Despite the collectibility (if such a word exists) of these prizes, if the format or the timecode is likely to upset you, please give others a better chance of winning by not entering yourself. Unfortunately Baby BowieNetter Steve K is disqualified from entering as the film has a 12 certificate, but not to worry my gummy little friend, a special BowieNet consolation lolly is winging its way to you. If the rest of you fancy your chances go here.

Mr Rice's Secret Is Out
It’s over now…
While I have no problem with you continuing your hunt for the elusive ‘Potion Of Life’ (see image above), I feel duty-bound to let you know the competition I set yesterday is over as we now have our twenty winners. This has been fun and it is warming to see so many e-mails from people close to taking desperate measures to retain what is left of their battered sanity and their mouse-clicking finger.
We won’t post the whereabouts of the secret hot-spot for a few days just yet, as I know that there are some of you that are determined to find it. Sometimes you just have to be cruel to be kind! Thanks again to Russell Phillips for supplying us with the videos in the first place.
