8 Years For Mick

Eight years ago, on 29th April 1993 , Mick Ronson left us to play lead for another great band. As Def Leppard’s Joe Elliot said, “If there’s a God up there, why does he do this? It can only be because he’s trying to put together the ultimate band”.

I have often searched in vain for a good website about Mick, until I saw a new URL on the various Bowie message boards. Mick Ronson – Only After Dark, is a website which shines with love and care. Among many pages, there is a lengthy biography, some beautiful and beautifully presented images, and a page of glowing tributes from many of his colleagues, including David. One – Bobby Chen, drummer for the Mick Ronson Band, was moved to write in the guestbook :-

“Great web site! The best Ronno site on the Net by a long way. I was glued to each page. Mick WAS a great & kind person. We had many fun time’s playing together. I miss him every day. You’ve done a very special job remembering Mick to the world….”

David had this to say about Mick, in March 2000, in his BBC Radio 2 : “Golden Years – The David Bowie Story” interview ( 03/18/00 NEWS: REMINDER : RADIO 2) .“From the moment he switched his amp on, it was all over. I thought this is my Jeff Beck. This guy is REALLY hot, this is a GREAT guitar player.”

Go, check out this lovely tribute, built by Bowienetter “camy”, and remember …..

Bowiephiles

Liv Tyler (The Guardian) : “I was thinking about it the other day, how that whole period of music was so amazing, and how lucky I was, ’cause I could meet all these people – Bowie and Iggy Pop and Keith Richard and Joey. And there’s really not that many people left that I feel that way about.”

Simon Price on King Adora (The Independent) : Spite is an undervalued mood in rock. It’s Morrissey mewing “Is that the best you can do?”; it’s Bowie calling “Oh God, I could do better than that!”, and it’s King Adora’s Maxi Browne singing just about anything at all.

Hanif Kureshi (The Guardian) : “David Bowie, especially around the Berlin period of Station to Station and Low, is a continued favourite, and an influence on the writing. “I think it was very sophisticated, and knowing – it somehow encapsulated the history of music within it.” The rock star that Gabriel idolises in Gabriel’s Gift is very Bowie-like. “We (HK and DB) had lunch once and passed a building site, and all of the builders ran to the front of the site and stood there, screaming and shouting.”

Gordon Robson (The Telegraph) – is floating his telephony group Stream on Aim this month. It seems, however, that there’s something else he’d rather be doing. His passion for music extends to having a recording studio at home where he jams on guitar and keyboards, reminiscing on his musical past as a member of various bands. “I suppose if I can’t be David Bowie, then floating on Aim has got to be the next best thing,” he says.

Golden Years On New Soundtrack

Maybe, I’ll slay a dragon for you…

David Bowie’s ‘Golden Years’ makes an appearance on the soundtrack album, ‘A Knight’s Tale’, due on the Sony/Columbia label on May 8th. The rather bizarre tracklisting, considering the film’s subject matter, is listed below:

01. Queen – ‘We Will Rock You’
02. War – ‘Low Rider’
03. Bachman-Turner Overdrive – ‘Takin’ Care Of Business’
04. David Bowie – ‘Golden Years’
05. Heart – ‘Crazy On You’
06. Eric Clapton – ‘Further On Up The Road’
07. Rare Earth – ‘Get Ready’
08. Sly & The Family Stone – ‘I Want To Take You Higher’
09. Thin Lizzy – ‘The Boys Are Back In Town’
10. Carter Burwell – ‘One Of Your Own’
11. Robbie Williams and Queen – ‘We Are The Champions’
12. Dan Powell – ‘Pieces’
13. Third Eye Blind – ‘Eye Conqueror’

The film itself, due in the summer, follows the adventures of a Medieval squire, William (played by Heath Ledger), who, after his Master dies unexpectedly, decides to try jousting and hits the road with a couple of friends. An unknown writer named Chaucer agrees to forge genealogy papers to provide William with a fresh history that will pass him off as a knight. With an acceptable pedigree now in hand, the young squire sets out to prove himself at jousting competitions throughout the land. Finding time, of course, to be chivalrous on the way.

The official sitefor ‘A Knight’s Tale’ features a music station that just might be playing some Bowie, but it’s hardly worth leaving the comfort of BowieRadioto find out.

Reminder – Eve To Chat On May 1st

Just a reminder that the platinum selling artist Eve will be dropping in to chat with us here on BowieNet on Tuesday, May 1st at 7PM.

Eve, as you probably know, is a Philadelphia native who got her first big break with Dr. Dre early on when her song “Eve of Destruction” found its way onto the Bulworth soundtrack.

Most recently, Eve was joined by No Doubt’s Gwen Stefani in her video for “Let Me Blow Ya Mind.” Eve’s debut album, which debuted at US number 1 in September 1999, featured beats by Ruff Ryders’ in-house producer Swizz Beatz and guest appearances by label mates DMX and the LOX, as well as a cameo from Missy “Misdemeanor” Elliott. The assertive declaration of independence, “Gotta Man”, made it clear that the star of the show was undoubtedly Eve. Now, after topping the pop, urban and rap charts with her critically acclaimed debut album Eve: Ruff Ryder’s First Lady (which sold nearly 2 million albums), she’s back to throb your ears with SCORPION. Don’t miss this special event!

“…one would think these virtuosos take a gay cap and slippers, with a scarf and party colored gown, to be the ensigns of dignity; for the vain things approach eachother, with an air, which shows they regard one another for their vestiments.”

Mojo's 100 Sonic Visionaries

The May 2001 edition of MOJO has a special feature devoted to the 100 most important producers, engineers and studio gurus:-

“Since the dawn of recording, backroom boffins have beenas influential and eccentric as the artists they’ve taped. Ina MOJO special, we celebrate 100 stellar studio gurus.”

Three of David’s most important collaborators are among the 100.

Ken Scott (left, above) is featured as part of a storyabout the very famous Trident studios, originally located in Soho.

“Trident was the first independent studio in England tohave 8-track. Scott became so enamoured with the resulting soundthat he formed a production company with the studio owners….Scott helped to fashion Bowie’s Hunky Dory, Ziggy Stardust and Aladdin Sane. The studio’s interior now bears little trace of its illustrious history – all that is, except the massive print of Bowie which fills an entire landing wall.”

Brian Eno (centre, above), whose influence on David’s career and in particular, The Berlin Trilogy is well documented, has a double page spread devoted to him.

“His earliest forays into production involved avant-garde composers like Michael Nyman and Gavin Bryars, and pro-am classical ensemble the Portsmouth Sinfonia. But it’s the application of ideas drawn from these interests that are the root of his success as a producer, enabling him to expand his clients’ musical ambitions into uncharted areas and instil in artists a sense of the limitless possibilities of music.”

Nile Rodgers (right, above), is featured together withBernard Edwards with whom he formed Chic and later produced Diana Ross and Sister Sledge. Nile helped fashion the incredibly successful Let’s Dance.

“The Sound : Sophisticated Manhattan disco with Rodgers’ distinctive guitar chording. Much imitated, never bettered. Rodgers worked with David Bowie, Madonna, Mick Jagger, Peter Gabriel and Eric Clapton.”
