Joey Ramone Dead At 49

“Everything is Rock ‘N Roll…”

Joey Ramone, lead singer of legendary punk band the Ramones, died of lymphatic cancer at 2:40 p.m. Sunday at the age of 49. A sad day for Rock ‘N Roll, to be sure.

You may recall that we had the privilege of chatting with Joey here on BowieNet two years ago. Bowie In Top 20 Voices Of The Century

Happy at the sound of your voice…

If you haven’t an egg-rolling session planned, you could do worse than tune in to BBC Radio 2 at midday (GMT) on Easter Monday for the last part of three in the station’s countdown of the ‘Voices Of The Century’. This chart, (a poll of 44,000 Radio 2 listeners and a panel of music industry figures) has been the subject of much heated debate, as these things always are, and I’m sure that debate will continue here with our man Bowie placed at a pretty impressive number thirteen.

The aim of the chart was to find the nation’s 100 favourite singing voices, excluding classical and operatic performers. That’s a lot of singers to choose from. It does seem that death has insured the high chart placing of many of the entrants, with nine of the twelve positions before David being taken up by singers who are sadly no longer with us. I guess this information pretty much endorses Bowie’s title of ‘living legend’. Here follows the top fifteen positions:

    01. Frank Sinatra
    02. Elvis Presley
    03. Nat ‘King’ Cole
    04. Ella Fitzgerald
    05. Bing Crosby
    06. John Lennon
    07. Aretha Franklin
    08. Billie Holiday
    09. Barbra Streisand
    10. Freddie Mercury
    11. Roy Orbison
    12. Paul McCartney
    13. David Bowie
    14. Bob Dylan
    15. Ray Charles

The broadcast is available online, click on the image above for more details. Well done for the well-deserved recognition yet again David.

This Month's Bowie Picture In Q Again

Don’t you let my letter get you down…

The current edition of Q (May 2001) which we have already mentioned once this month, ( 04/02/01 NEWS: WIN A SIGNED COPY OF BLOOD AND GLITTER ) has an interesting letter from the very observant Rachel Jenkins of Middlesex, that goes like this:

Dear Q Re: The omnipresent David Bowie There has been a photo of David Bowie in every single issue of your fine magazine for the last year or so. Big or small, obvious or subtle, relevant or not, there is always an image of him (page 48 in last issue and page 14 in the one before that for example). Not that I’m complaining, it is surely a good thing to include visuals of probably the greatest musician in the world, but I was wondering – is there a Bowie-crazed photo editor? Or could it possibly be a huge conspiracy initiated by the Thin White Duke himself in order to remind us mere mortals just how great he is? Or is it some kind of crazy “Spot the Bowie” competition where I win lots of lovely prizes? Please Explain.
Rachel Jenkins, Teddington, Middlesex
No, It’s just a freaky coincidence.

The letter is accompanied by a picture of Bowie from Glastonbury last year, not that it mattered of course, the ‘Blood and Glitter’ special contained a further five pictures. Well spotted Rachel, and long may this practice continue, after all we mention Q as often as they mention DB!
