V – The Last Word

Cover of V magazine…Ziggy’s bastard children
proving it’s OK to sport a mullet again!

It’s confusing these days…

There seems to be a tiny bit of confusion surrounding the publication that brought us David’s ‘Cosh Boys’ piece that I first mentioned on Wednesday ( 05/02/01 NEWS: BOWIE WRITES AND ROCK SHOOTS FOR ‘V’ MAG ). Firstly the publication is the bi-monthly V magazine, which should not be confused with the limited edition Visionaire that is published less frequently and costs about fifty times more than V. Secondly, V magazine isn’t themed and only David’s piece relates to gangs.

OK, so what you need to seek out is the March/April 2001 Spring edition that is Issue #10 of V magazine, pictured above, available in your local artsy type newsagent or booksellers. V magazine can be found in the right places all over the planet, but unfortunately does not have a presence on the world-wide information super highway.

The incredible Visionaire itself is also worth checking out if you can afford it. David contributed to Issue 25 (confusingly entitled ‘Visionairy’) and Iman made a particularly stunning appearance in Issue 21, ‘Deck Of Cards’. The Visionaire site can be found here. Good luck.

Bowiephiles

Ian McCulloch : The Times: 04/28/01 Ian McCulloch is lead singer for Echo and the Bunnymen. He was interviewed for a regular feature in which famous people describe their cultural life. “David Bowie?s Hunky Dory has to be one of the Top 10 albums of all time. I always find myself singing The Bewlay Brothers, Quicksand and Changes in the kitchen. I first heard it after school at a friend?s house: it was summer and I can still remember the smell of his house and the way that the light came in. I eventually saved up and bought the album on cassette for £2.50 from Rushworths in Liverpool in 1973. Hunky Dory has some great lines, probably the best he has written. ”

Charles Kennedy : The Mirror : 04/30/01 The Liberal Democrat party leader opened his home to an interviewer for the ‘Tonight’ UK TV Programme. He was surprised to find the coffee table strewn with David Bowie CD’s. “What’s your favourite Bowie album then?” he asked. “Station To Station” Charlie replied, quick as a flash.

Anggun : Reuters : 04/27/01 Anggun is an Indonesian-born, currently Paris-based singer who sold 4 million albums in Indonesia and had a hit single “Snow In The Sahara” which was distributed in 33 countries and sold a million copies. Given the chance to sing a duet with anyone, pop icon David Bowie is Anggun’s man. “He’s one of my idols. He’s everyone else’s idol in music. He’s amazing,” she said.

Rosario Dawson : Calgary Sun Rosario, star of the comedy film Josie and the Pussycats, in which she plays a small town girl who becomes a rock star and amateur sleuth, admits the film helped her live out one of her greatest fantasies. “I’ve always secretly wanted to be David Bowie. I think I was air-guitaring even in the womb — that’s how much I’ve wanted to be a rock star.”

Stephan Olsdal : Ottowa Sun Stephan, bassist for Placebo, was interviewed while on tour in Canada. “Him being a fan, that kind of gets back at that little voice inside your head that says you’re crap. So that was a special chapter in our lives,” says Olsdal, who proudly cites Placebo’s appearances at Bowie’s 50th birthday party in ’97 and a live duet of Twentieth Century Boy at the 1999 Brit Awards as career highlights thus far.

New Annie Leibovitz Show

Detail from a photograph of David Bowie
in Atlanta Georgia, 1990 by Annie Leibovitz

I keep a photograph…

Annie Leibovitz, the creator of the magnifecent portrait of David Bowie above, has a show of her most recent photographs entitled ‘Nudes’ at the Shine Gallery in London. Annie has chosen performers from renowned dance companies as her subject matter for this exhibition, and the operating theatre lights she has used to illuminate the figures have given the pictures a beautiful blue hue that lends a cold, eerie quality to the shots.

I feel duty-bound to point out to members of the NSFC that this exhibition does not contain any pictures of David Bowie himself, let alone nude ones, but is well worth a visit anyway. Pop over to Bowieart News for further details of the exhibition, and if you have plenty of cash to spare you may want to stick in a bid for the full-size original of the above photograph over on eBay right now.

Bowienetter Makes Good – Part 386

Let me sleep beside you…

While looking up a feature on ‘Britart’ at the rather good www.artbabyart.com recently, I came across a familiar face…well two actually. You may recognise the visage of BowieNetter Carla Rhodes above, who is known to most of you here as Picadilly, the girl who got her Bowie puppet (that’s him on the left) onstage with the real David Bowie at The Kit Kat Klub in New York City at the end of the last century.

Well it appears that this talented dark horse has interviewed herself in true loopy style for artbabyart – here follows an excerpt:

Carla-la-la: Well Ms. Rhodes, I also hear you?re a very accomplished painter.

Carla: That I am. I can do a painting in under 15 minutes and think nothing of it.

David Bowie figure: (interrupts) Haha! So does everyone else!

Carla-la-la: Oh please… Must you have your puppets interrupt during the interview?

As well as the interview the site also features a couple of Carla’s Bowie paintings. If this has whetted your appetite for more, then you probably need psychiatric help. However, you can get maximum Carla here. You have been warned.

How To Get Cosh Boys

V can be heroes…

Ooops…neglected to tell you that the issue of V magazine that I mentioned in yesterday’s news is the current Spring 2001 edition. Still, it’s a great excuse to post this fine Mick Rock portrait again.
