Ziggy Is 29 Today

The album Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars was first released on 6th June 1972, which, as Blammo points out above, makes today its 29th birthday. Only one more year to wait until our special ’30 years’ celebrations in 2002!

Check out the Bowienet Ziggy Stardust section in Chronology, for audio clips and much more, or try the Ziggy Stardust Companion website, which has just been updated for June. New features there include an original RCA promotional T shirt from 1972. I also very much enjoyed last month’s feature on fan pilgrimages to Heddon Street.

Blood And Glitter Question #8

“While ya down there”
Ronno and Ziggy, 1972 © Mick Rock.

Lord get me out of here…

Question number eight in our Blood and Glitter competition.

Question Eight:
Today is the 29th anniversary of the release of the album that started all the fuss, and the picture above is possibly the shot that started a whole lot of other fuss. This classic Mick Rock photograph is (in)famously known as the “fellatio” shot, whatever that means…but when and where was it taken? The venue, year and month will suffice.

We will post details of how to enter the competition with the final question on Friday.

9th Wedding Anniversary For Iman And David

As we promised (04/24/01 NEWS : HAPPY 9TH WEDDING ANNIVERSARY, IMAN AND DAVID) when we joined Iman and David in celebrating the 9th anniversary of their wedding in Lausanne, we have another surprise in store. Today is the 9th anniversary of the moving ceremony in Florence when they renewed their vows at St James Episcopal Church.

Our lovely susans has taken a lot of time and care, scanning in the images from two of the beautiful photo spreads which filled magazines around the world. If you haven’t seen these pictures before, prepare yourself for a huge intake of breath. If you have seen them, just take another look and then take your biggest smile into the rest of your day.

Here they are!

Our very best wishes to all the Bowie household. We hope you have a day filled with wonderful memories.

David Chats With Us Today!

All the fun begins at 6PM today! Just go to the BowieNet Chat page to jump in!

As always, please remember that this is different from the regular chat room in that it is a “moderated chat.” This means you will only see your own questions and the ones that David picks to answer, not every question and comment that comes through the room.

See you at 6!

Iman And David In People Magazine

The current edition of People magazine (USA), issue date June 11th, has a spread on His and Hers Style Secrets. Iman and David are featured and the images of the couple include one from the Tibet show in February and another from last September.

Hamish Bowles, a Vogue editor, says “David Bowie is someone who has always had the courage of his convictions.”

Iman is quoted as saying, “I’m usually quite clear about what works on me, even if its outrageous, it has a point of view. Why wear something that a flock of people are wearing?” Her own taste runs to Azzedine Alaia, John Galliano, Calvin Klein and Donna Karan. “I like very comfortable, more sensual clothes,” she explains.

David, it seems, favors British designers Alexander McQueen and Paul Smith, who, Iman says. “design clothes that are traditional but have a sense of irony.”

Together, says Bowles, Iman and David “make a staggeringly dramatic couple.”

Bowie Has Designs On Chocolate Biscuit

If you’re feeling rather peckish…
p..p..p…pick up a, pick up a rock god..

Boys, boys, it’s a sweet thing, sweet thing…

This one is a little tenuous perhaps, but if you think it’s too silly you can blame BowieNetter Charly for starting it. It seems she discovered a Ziggy inspired Penguin bar (popular biscuit here in the UK) while enjoying a cuppa the other morning. Now with my own discovery of a ‘Let’s Dance’ inspired bar, (complete with a shadow in the background) what first appeared to be pure coincidence is suddenly looking like the makings of a feasible theory. Can there really be a Bowie fan over in the art department at McVities?

Whatever, I guess it’s no real surprise, everybody knows that penguins ripped their whole look from The Thin White Duke anyway. Any more contributions to this story will be gratefully received, I’m sure we can find a suitable prize for the best of ’em. Thanx again Charly, you can go back to making arrangements for your Bowie Party now.

Blood And Glitter Question #7

…and other friends of mine…

Question number seven in our Blood and Glitter competition.

Question Seven:
“What’s most interesting about those three – The Unholy Trinity – besides the amazing careers they all have – is the fact that they are still alive.”
Who were the three people Mick Rock was talking about in the above quote from 1996?

We will post details of how to enter the competition with the final question on Friday.

Art Imitates Music

“In Galleries this weekend” is a regular section of the New York Times online, and featured on May 18th was an item on the artist Erik Hanson, who was exhibiting at the Derek Eller gallery on West 25th Street.

Erik Hanson’s quest (is) to give visual form to his listening pleasure ? call it rock ‘n’ roll Conceptualism. His work offers tangible proof that music is atmosphere ? reverie ? as well as sound.

The item mentioned that one of Mr Hanson’s listening pleasures is the work of David Bowie. Enquiries of the gallery told us more :-

Since 1997 Erik has been making work that aims to translate his experience of listening to music into visual documentation. David Bowie has been the subject of numerous works that have taken the form of painting, drawing, photography, needlepoint, and sculpture. Bowie related works were recently shown at the Contemporary Arts Center in New Orleans. Work has also been exhibited in England, Belgium, and throughout the United States.

The Derek Eller gallery was also kind enough to send us some images which you can see here.

You can contact Erik Hanson, via Derek Eller, here.

I found the secrets, I found gold…

Scheduled for release on Virgin records a week from now, (Monday 11th June) is the double CD, 42-track, ‘Capital Gold Legends’. Capital Radio is a popular Bowie-friendly London based radio station here in the UK, and this CD reflects the sort of music the station plays. The full length version of ‘Space Oddity’ is the song representing David Bowie on this compilation. Go here to pre-order the CD for a very reasonable £11.99, and check out the full track-listing while you’re there.
