Region One Zoolander Dvd Out Today

Fa-fa-fa-fa-fashion…

Ben Stiller’s comedy, Zoolander, which features a cameo from David Bowie is released on region one DVD today.

Ben Stiller is Derek Zoolander, a supermodel big on charisma, if not exactly blessed with the quickest wit. Targeted by an evil crime organisation that wants him to carry out some dangerous schemes, Zoolander has to think fast – but with his mind often elsewhere, he usually has trouble thinking at all, with frequently hilarious results.

David Bowie’s appearance is brief but very stylish, as two models, Derek and Hansel (Owen Wilson), compete on the runway under his discerning eye.

The DVD and VHS of the film will not be released in the UK until 31 May 2002, and even then these will be rental only versions priced at £50 to trade retailers. The full commercial UK release of both the DVD and VHS is likely to be two to three months later.

Emm Gryner In Chat Tomorrow

The delectable Emm Gryner, backstage at the
BBC, London 2000. Picture by Total Blam Blam.

Can’t hold my breath, Without your voice…

Just a quick reminder that the hugely talented songstress Emm Gryner will be our very special chat guest here on BowieNet tomorrow at 6pm (EST). The queen of funky modern gadgets is keen to talk about; “…indie record labels, DIY Rock ‘n’ Roll etc.”, and she also hinted that; “…we could give away some more albums etc…”

I’m pretty sure she won’t mind talking a little about the shows she performed as a backing vocalist for David Bowie in 1999/2000. See last Thursday’s news for the full malarkey.

Extra Special Item In 9th Bowienet Auction

More groovy clobber from David Bowie’s absolutely huge vault.

And so the story goes he wore the clothes…

More items from David’s very own vault of collectable doo-dahs are now available for your bidding enjoyment. We’re back to three items in this the ninth BowieNet eBay auction, one of which is particularly special. The item on the left in the picture above is not only signed by db, but it was actually worn by him too!

This beautiful olive green tailored shirt with zipper was created by French fashion designer, Agnes B of Paris, and would set you back a few bob anyway, regardless of its history. David has signed inside the collar with a Bowie 2001 signature. See below.

Erm…a bit obvious what this is really…not sure why I even started this caption.

The other two items are an XL 100%% pre-shrunk cotton, I-iman.com T-shirt, and a black bowling-style medium sized shirt with BOWIE embroidered on the left breast. View each of the items by clicking on the shortcuts below.

The second of five signed limited edition prints of David Bowie and Tony Visconti eventually went for a very generous $305! All of the proceeds from the sale of this print will go to the Chernobyl Childrens Life Line Charity. Keep an eye out for the remaining three copies over the coming weeks.

Stop Slaving, Bowie To The Rescue!

And I’m busting up my brains for the words…

Those of you reading this that still haven’t worked out that the message boards are a constant source of fun, and indeed, useful information, will be pleased to learn that David Bowie has stopped the suffering of many a curious fan by posting the correct lyrics to ‘I Would Be Your Slave’.

Now you can all stop straining to hear through the roar of background noise on the illicit recording you have of the song, and you can also ignore the brave if amusing attempts to decipher the lyrics that you may have seen posted elsewhere. These are the correct words per the studio recording, with only a couple of minor deviations from the live version performed at Carnegie Hall 2002.

—————————————————

I Would be your Slave

Walking in the snowy street
Let me understand
Drifting down a silent path
Stumbling over land
Open up your heart to me
Show me who you are
And I would be your Slave

Do you sleep in quietude
Do you walk in peace
Do you laugh out loud at me
No one else is free
Open up your heart to me
Show me all you are
And I would be your slave

I don’t sit and wait
I don’t give a damn
I don’t see the point at all
No footsteps in the sand

I bet you laugh out loud at me
A chance to strike me down
Give me peace of mind at last
Show me all you are
Open up your heart to me
I would be your slave

I don?t sit and wait
I don’t give a damn
I don’t see the point at all
No footsteps in the sand

I would give you all my love
Nothing else is free
Open up your heart to me
I would be your slave

forget your head

Best Disembodied Head (!) : Baltimore Citypaper : 09/19/01 Among the categories for Best of Baltimore 2001, as listed in the online version of the Baltimore Citypaper, is ‘Best Disembodied Head’. The title is awarded to David Bowie. They say: “Staring out from the vacant storefront is what the locals have taken to calling the “David Bowie head,” for its remarkable resemblance to the singer in his glam-rock days. It’s as if Bowie stepped off the cover of Pin Ups and was instantly decapitated, leaving only his orange hair, pursed lips, and steely eyes intact. No one knows where this sassy specter came from, or why it graces Chestnut Avenue. A totemic tribute to that long-gone era of free love and androgyny? A hairdresser’s relic from a time when the Day-Glo mullet was an acceptable look? Or is someone just trying to creep us out?” (regina)

Compilation tape for db : Play UK (TV) : 03/09/02 David is the subject of this week’s For Your Ears Only, a new TV show, exclusive to Play UK (Channel 217: Sky Digital). Each week, a celebrity guest makes a compilation tape for someone they care about. This week, Radio 1 DJ, Emma B compiles a tape for David Bowie. The show goes out at 7.30PM, Saturday 9th March.

Ashes To Ashes : Sunday Times : 03/03/02 Travis had a double page spread in last week’s Sunday Times sub-titled “for Travis, it?s all about the songs”. The interview opened with this paragraph, in which the whole band agree that Ashes To Ashes is a top ‘tune’. “We?re sitting in the back room of the Dublin Castle, one of London?s more intimate music venues. From the bar next door, a distinctive riff emerges. ?Tune,? says Neil Primrose, Travis?s drummer. ?Tune,? concurs Andy Dunlop, the band?s guitarist, as he recognises the opening bars of Bowie?s Ashes to Ashes. ?Aye, tune,? concur the singer, Fran Healy, and the bassist, Dougie Payne. And, with unanimity reached, the interview can continue.

Theatre and Rock’n’Roll : The Times : 02/02/02 The actor, Rhys Ifans (Notting Hill, Kevin and Perry Go Large), was the subject of this week’s ‘My Cultural Life’ section in The Times. When asked about his taste in music, he divulges he was the original lead singer of Super Furry Animals. He adds: “Age-wise, I saw the arse-end of punk. I loved the Sex Pistols but I also love the Rolling Stones and David Bowie. If anybody has married theatre with rock?n?roll, it is Bowie.”

Ziggy Stardust : MTV.com : Tuesday’s 10.30PM ET Ozzy Osbourne’s family are the subject of an MTV “reality-based comedy” following their lives. To accompany the show, there is an online interview with Ozzy which includes a question about his listening habits. His reply includes this: “To be perfectly honest with you, I should listen to more, but there’s nothing really that grabs me, you know? I like the older stuff [from] when I was younger like [Led] Zeppelin, the Beatles, McCartney, [John] Lennon albums. Early [David] Bowie albums like Ziggy Stardust.”

Emm Gryner In Chat

As the current Bowienet Poll indicates, the Live Chat is most desired by Bnetters. Hence, we have an old friend joining us in the Bowie ModChat next Wednesday @ 6PM EST.

As you may already know, Emm Gryner toured with David during his 1999 tour. Since then she’s been quite a busy girl and she’s at it again with her new indie album “Girl Versions”. In fact, it was recently nominated for “Best Pop Album” in Canada’s Juno Awards. (The Junos are the Canadian Grammys)

Emm gave us a call recently and asked if she could once again spend some QT with you Bnetters to give you a heads up on what she’s been doing and where she’s going.

Here’s what Emm’s thinking:
“With DB getting off Virgin, and my homemade indie album being a surprise nomination for Best Pop Album in Canada, I thought maybe it would be cool to have a chat with the theme being…indie record labels, or Do-it-yourself rock ‘n roll etc…we could give away some more albums etc…”

Sounds like it could be a really interesting event.

Click here to visit emmgryner.com, Emm’s Official Website. She’s got loads of stuff to see, hear, and read. (There are also a couple pics of DB)

Hope to see you there.

Bowie Gets Enormous Buzz!

Welcome to the world of your dreams…

Those of you that neither visit the message boards, (well, it’s possible) nor check out the ‘WHAT’S NEW’ panel, may not have noticed that a new welcome message was posted by David yesterday. Regular visitors to the MBs will have been pleased to have Roseland definitely confirmed in the new welcome, after David hinted pretty strongly about it a week or so ago in this message.

The new welcome message can be found by clicking in the first box of the ‘INFECTIOUS’ panel just above the ‘WHAT’S NEW’ panel. We have posted the message in full below for ease of reading…and what heart-warming stuff it is…

——————————————————————————————————————————

Hello there, welcome to davidbowie.com, you.

It seems it’s been this way forever…but how long have we been “us” now? I don’t remember exactly, an awfully long time…and what a royal larf it’s been so far.

There’ve been a few things happened since last I welcomed you, haven’t there? I did all that live stuff, and you did it with me…and some of it was just with you BowieNetters; Roseland, the BBC Radio Theatre and Glastonbury 2000. That was good, I liked that one. Every last person at Glasto now a fully paid-up BowieNetter, possibly. I’m about to go all live again, and I really can’t wait. The Tibet bash at Carnegie reminded me of all those faces I’ll see once more, you know the ones…they’re yours, and I’m always so very pleased to see them. So here’s to Roseland and Meltdown this year, to name but two of, hopefully, many.

I’ve also got to know a few of you even better since my last welcome here, via e-mail and the message boards. Yeah, the MBs. How good are you at luring me on to there? More than anything though, I’m still impressed by you. I sincerely love this community and I’m very proud of what we have created here. To this day, part of my daily routine is to log on to BowieNet first thing and see what’s going on. I check out what I’m meant to be doing, and sometimes I go and do it.

Seriously, I still get an enormous buzz from this place and one of the coolest things about being David Bowie, is having David Bowie fans.

See you very soon,

Thank you.

Aawwwrrrr…don’t it make you feel all warm inside. Told you he stills loves us!

25 Years Ago Today – Blammo Meets Bowie!

The late Tony Mascia nervously helps a triumphant David Bowie into
the getaway car. Picture taken by a sixteen-year-old Total Blam Blam.

The first time I saw the dum dum boys, I was fascinated…

A little bit self-indulgent this one I’m afraid. The rather blurry snap above is the very first picture I ever took of David Bowie. The shot is of him leaving through the stage door of The Rainbow in London, on March 7th 1977, after playing a gig as keyboard player with Iggy Pop. This was the last of six dates in England on ‘The Idiot’ tour, before it moved to Canada and the USA.

This was my first ever Iggy show, and I had only seen David once before as The Thin White Duke the previous year at Wembley. Earlier in the day was also the first time I had actually met David, when I and my friend, Thommo, were the only fans around to greet David as he arrived for the show. DB gracefully stopped to say hello and shake hands, and I managed to blurt “Low’s f*cking brilliant!”.

The show itself was extraordinary. Sat towards the front, in line with David, it was fascinating to witness him play and sing as a regular band member. Of course I didn’t realise at that point that I was watching two thirds of the future Tin Machine! Iggy was absolutely breathtaking, showcasing songs from the forthcoming ‘The Idiot’.

An audience made up largely of colourful London punks gave the whole thing a slightly menacing atmosphere, especially as it had been widely reported that they had “rioted” and spent much of Saturday’s show (two days earlier) screaming for Bowie. Anyway, I was hooked on Iggy from that moment on, and it wasn’t too long before I’d be watching David in his own right again at Earls Court.

We skipped the encore to re-claim my Instamatic (confiscated on the way in) before running back round to the stage door where a gaggle of fans were draped over the waiting Mercedes, doors open, engine running. The final decaying notes of the last song onstage chased Iggy past a nervous looking Tony Mascia straight into the car, (sadly to no response from the assembled mob) and then absolute chaos seconds later as David dived onto the back seat of the car which was now covered by crazed fans determined to get a closer look.

As the car sped off into the darkness I couldn’t have possibly imagined where I’d be 25 years hence. March 7th 1977 was a magical night for me that will stay etched forever on my brain.
