Members Pages For Tibet House Benefit Updated

You’ve really made the grade

The BowieNet members pages celebrating David’s appearance at the 2002 Tibet House Benefit are ready to view. Here are one or two extracts to whet your appetite.

“Bowie… offered a sensitive new ballad titled “I Would Be Your Slave” before–in the true vision, style, and audacity that only Bowie possesses–he delivered a stunning interpretation of ‘Space Oddity'”. ( Launch)

“In my mind a rush of thoughts twist and turn as I remember all the ways David’s music has touched my life.” (Chrissy)

…. followed by Space Oddity. I just kept thinking – “This is a GIFT!” A wonderful, unexpected gift from Bowie to his fans. A treasure that I didn’t think I’d hear performed again. (cavebat)

The rest of the night I was drifting amongst the clouds, it was the happiest I had ever been. Thank you, David, for making my sixteenth birthday the best! (Alyssa)

8th Bowienet Auction Off To A Great Start

David Bowie and Tony Visconti at The Beckenham Arts Lab in
1969. Limited edition of five 9″ x 6″ prints signed by them both.

Someone has to see, a role for him and me…

As we mentioned yesterday, the eighth BowieNet eBay auction is now live. Just one item this week, and it’s the second of five signed limited edition prints of David Bowie and Tony Visconti taken at The Beckenham Arts Lab in 1969 by Arts Lab performer Stephen Roberts.

All of the proceeds from the sale of this print will go to the Chernobyl Childrens Life Line Charity. And the good news for the charity is that after just one day, and at $170.00, the bidding is already higher than the $162.50 that the last print sold for!

The seventh BowieNet eBay auction finished yesterday with a combined record high of $614, $520 of which was for the signed 7″ ‘Survive’ picture disc alone!

Beta Test Team

You can’t get enough, but enough ain’t the test…

We are looking for people to be on the BowieNet New Splash Beta test team.

That’s right, 20 members of BowieNet will be asked to be part of our testing crew for the new splash page. Check out the new features, mouse ’til you can’t swerve any more, click anything and everything you see, and most importantly, critique the page’s usability as that is the reason we are planning to replace the 2 current splash pages.

We will be asking for detailed comments via email. We need you to put the page through it’s paces. If selected, we will send you the information you need to submit your feedback.

If you’re up for this mission, simply fill out THIS FORM, and we will select 20 people to help us work out the kinks.

Moulin Rouge Out On Dvd Today

A magic day he passed my way…

Baz Luhrmann’s visual feast that is ‘Moulin Rouge’ is released as a Region 2, two-disc DVD set today. The release contains the original two hour film, plus an incredible six hours of extras! Needless to say I haven’t watched all of the extras just yet. I should warn those of you that don’t already know that there is no original David Bowie music on this release.

As with many films, the soundtrack CD bears little resemblance to the film soundtrack proper. Ewan McGregor sings ‘Nature Boy’ in the film, and he also does a bit of “Heroes” with Nicole Kidman. Beck’s version of ‘Diamond Dogs’ is also absent, though the dancing girls do sing a snatch of it when they are introduced as the Diamond Dogs themselves.

Marius de Vries (remixer of some of the ‘hours…’ single tracks) is interviewed about the construction of the film soundtrack, and boy does he look wired? This man does look intense, but with talent like that I guess he has every right to. Anyway, check out ‘Moulin Rouge’ if you haven’t already, it is a beautiful thing.

'survive' Picture Disc On Ebay Passes $500!

This record, with DB’s signature on it, is
worth more than $500! No really, it is.

Jung the foreman prayed at work…

With just over an hour left to go, the signed ‘Survive’ 7″ picture disc that we currently have up on eBay is now up to an unbeliviable $520.00! Can’t imagine it’s going to go for much more than that, but then again, I wouldn’t have thought it would go for anything like the amount it is already at either.

The next auction will be another of the signed Bowie/Visconti prints while we wait for more goodies from the vaults to be photographed. You can reach the BowieNet Auctions Page by clicking on the image above.

Bowienet News Archive Updated

News had just come over…

Busy beaver Susans has updated the BowieNet Archive to include February. She has also included a link to all of the crummies for 2001, and to those that have been posted in 2002 so far.

You can reach the BowieNet Archive by clicking on the image above, and we’ll soon be adding this valuable service to the Mutations box for ease of use.

Another Minotaur On The Loose

An image from one of the 17 inserts included in
the ‘This Minotaur’ box set © David Bowie 1994.

Then I got the small red box, And I didn’t know what to do…

While we’re on the subject of eBay, you may have noticed that there is a copy of the spectacular Minotaur box up for grabs that we mentioned in the news a couple of weeks back. (02/14/02 NEWS: ULTRA-RARE MINOTAUR BOX FOR SALE) If you haven’t seen it yet, check it out by clicking on the image above. It’s worth a look just to see the individual prints.

The seller has a ‘Buy It Now’ option for a mere $10,500.00, so I expect this copy will be sold within an hour or two of me posting this! };-)

Bowienet/ebay Bidding Goes Berserk!

This signature, (or one like it) is worth a few bob!

Who said ‘time is on my side’? *

With just two days left to go, the signed ‘Survive’ 7″ picture disc that we currently have up on eBay has reached a staggering $330.00! Not sure if the high bidder, jungtheforeman, is a BowieNetter or not (yes I know we do have one), but we’d love to hear from the eventual winner, whoever that may be.

You can reach the BowieNet Auctions Page by clicking on the image above.

Bowiephiles

It’s not the side-effects of the cocaine

Iman : The Independent : 02/13/02 In an article in The Independent discussing Naomi Campbell’s recent legal action against The Mirror, some of the most famous supermodels talk about their own experiences. Iman is quoted as saying: “I’ve done ’em all. Sex, drugs and rock’n’roll. I am doing the rock’n’roll now [she’s married to David Bowie] and some sex, but no drugs.”

Hair : The Guardian : 02/22/02 In The Guardian, Vic Reeves is interviewed at length about one of the saddest trends of the last couple of decades, the shocking downturn in decent haircuts. Brian Eno, Rod Stewart and Paul Kossof are all singled out as examples of a period of hairstyles which will never come again. Special mention goes to David. Vic says: “One of the greatest pioneers of all, both musically and follically, was David Bowie. “There was a kid at school who turned up one day with an Aladdin Sane cut dyed orange, and he got sent home immediately,” says Reeves. “And this kid was six foot when he was 13, so he stood out anyway. Kids don’t particularly copy pop stars’ hairstyles these days, but then there isn’t much to copy.”

Music : Evening Standard : 02/25/02 Closing and, by all accounts, stealing the show at London Fashion Week this year was the ‘Welsh Wonder Boy’, designer Julien Macdonald. In a story in London’s Evening Standard, the fashion reporter describes the best show he saw all week. The best is kept for last: a brilliant Julien Macdonald show – so glamorous, so thrilling I don’t even feel tired any more. The front row is stuffed with celebs and the music is Bowie – it doesn’t come much better.

Tribute : The Record : 01/18/02 Bowie tribute artist, Jean Meilleur, has been touring recently backed by the 58 piece Kitchener-Waterloo symphony orchestra, in a show called ‘Jeans ‘n’ Classics’. “When you hear a symphony play Fame by David Bowie, all of the sudden the song takes on an unbelievable atmosphere. It’s the power without the noise. And it makes classical music more accessible to the general public.’ he told ‘The Record’. They added: Certainly this was the case last night, as Peter Brennan-arranged renditions of Bowie classics like Modern Love, Let’s Dance and Rebel Rebel made it clear Meilleur’s trade-off had been a smart career move. “Rebel Rebel, how could they know,” he crooned, backed by a wall of orchestral sound. “Hot tramp, I love you so.” Hot tramp I love you so? For those who think of classical music as pompous twaddle for blueblood twits and their brandy-sniffing escorts, Jeans ‘n’ Classics forces a re-evaluation. Which, after all, is the point. “We’re trying to interpret the music as art,” pointed out Meilleur. “It’s not a clone show.” (bon)
