it’s only ‘cos you’re true

A new interview with David is showing across the USA and Canada today. ‘The New Music‘ a show which describes itself as:- The mandatory media source for an intelligent take on pop culture and music will air footage shot while db was on the Area 2 tour at 9.00PM ET and 6.00PM PT. ‘The New Music’ shows on both Much Music (today) and City TV on Thursday at 11.35PM ET and 8.35PM PT.

Here is a quote from what the website has to say about their luck in obtaining an interview. He is one of the most interesting, innovative, industrial and important artists of all time. … (He) has influenced about as many people as any other artist in history. … He is a force of his own. I can only be talking about one of two people and seeing as Beethoven is dead, that leaves David Bowie. Bowie has not only invented scenes, he’s survived them. I was lucky enough to talk to one of the last true artists while he was touring with Moby’s Area Two festival and he opened up about his life, his fear, his work and his disappointments.

Do make sure to check out the link, as you can see some outtakes from the interview online.

Enjoy!

At least that’s my story, and I’m sticking to it.. 😉

Enter Bowie Radio 2 Show Competition Now

Please excuse completely gratuitous use of tasty
Bowie pic that has absolutely no connection to this
piece whatsoever! Picture by Markus Klinko & Indrani.

How Lucky You Are…

We are at last able to give a chance to 25 BowieNetters to win a place at Wednesday’s David Bowie Radio 2 performance at Maida Vale in London, that we told you about last week. (09/07/02 NEWS: BOWIE LIVE PERFORMANCE FOR RADIO 2) We were hoping to have the winners of Radio 2’s own competition for their allocation of tickets, but it seems those names aren’t yet available. All I can say to those of you that know they already have a place via the Radio 2 competition, is that it would be cool of you not to enter this competition too.

Please don’t enter this contest unless you are absolutely certain you will be able to attend. If there is any doubt that you can make it to London on the morning of Wednesday the 18th, then please do not enter.

OK same rules as usual, but here they are again just in case:

As ever, please be sure to provide proof of a BowieNet account…either e-mail your entry from your BowieNet account, or supply your BowieNet user name if you mail from a non BowieNet account.

If possible please provide a telephone number of where you can be contacted on Monday evening.

No duplicate entries please… duplicate entries will only be accepted if you are worried that a previous e-mail wasn’t sent properly.

OK, on to the competition… well it’s not so much of a competition actually. We thought the fairest way to do this one would be to randomly draw 25 names out of a list of people that can attend. So, all you need to do is send an e-mail to me at TotalBlamBlam@DavidBowie.com with a subject line of: I can attend on Wednesday the 18th.

The contest will end at midnight UK time on Sunday night, and we will notify the winners on Monday evening, after we have checked the validity of their BowieNet account. Good luck to each and every one of you.

Paris Show On 'arte' Tonight & David Answers You Via Video

I’ll spin you valentine evenings

European TV have two very cool new websites featuring areas devoted to David. Check out these pages at ARTE which give full details of the ‘David Bowie Evening’ airing tonight, which we reminded you about in BowiePhiles last Friday.

Starting at 8.45PM (France), you can see ‘Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence’, a short interview by Ray Cokes, (which you can also view streaming in the video section) as well as the hotly awaited TV showing of concert footage from the gig at Paris Olympia on 1st July this year. Among other pages, there is also a quiz with some great prizes.

tf1.fr, also has a new page devoted to David, with lots of great choices. You can enter a competition to win one of the last two pairs of tickets for the shows at the Zenith, Paris on 24th or 25th September, listen to live versions of ‘Everyone Says Hi’, and ‘Slow Burn’, see a clip from the ‘Slow Burn’ video, and also see streaming video of a section from an interview with David recorded on 7th July this year. Unfortunately, the interpreter tends to take over a bit on this last item.

You can also ask David a question, and then check back at noon tomorrow to see if he answers. The website says “The star answers your questions on video on Friday 13th September at 12.00”. Check it out!

'everyone Says 'hi'' Out Monday… Win The Set Now!

Love to know what’s what…

As we told you last month (08/22/02 NEWS: FORMATS FOR ‘EVERYONE SAYS ‘HI” CD SINGLE) the ‘Everyone Says ‘Hi’? CD set is released this coming Monday here in the UK.

Available as three different CDs, this set collects together the extra tracks that were originally intended for the withdrawn ‘Slow Burn’ UK release, plus the previously unreleased ‘Heathen’ outtake, ‘Safe’, and ‘Baby Loves That Way’, another track from the unreleased ‘Toy’ album.

These CDs normally sell for much less than the RRP in the first week of release, which means if you’re quick you can get the set for far less than the price of an album… You’re also more likely to help the single chart, which means another TOTPs appearance if it does! In other words, get out there on Monday and buy what has to be the best set of Bowie bonus tracks in a long time!

If you didn’t already buy the European ‘Slow Burn’ single, imho, ‘Shadow Man’ alone is worth the price of this set. Here’s the final breakdown for each of the formats:

‘EVERYONE SAYS ‘HI” UK CD SINGLE FORMATS

CD1
Everyone Says ‘Hi’
Safe (Outtake from ‘Heathen’ sessions)
Wood Jackson (Outtake from ‘Heathen’ sessions)

CD2
Everyone Says ‘Hi’
Baby Loves That Way (From unreleased ‘Toy’ album)
You’ve Got A Habit Of Leaving (From unreleased ‘Toy’ album)

CD3
Everyone Says ‘Hi’
When The Boys Come Marching Home (Outtake from ‘Heathen’ sessions)
Shadow Man (From unreleased ‘Toy’ album)

THE COMPETITION
OK, if that’s not enough to tempt you to your local record emporium on Monday morning, here’s a competition to win one of five sets as pictured above. Not sure how hard you’ll find this, but all I’m saying is that the Cryptogram below translates to a line from ‘Everyone Says ‘Hi’?, and you need to tell me what that line is:

Everyone Says ‘Hi’ Cryptogram

25 7 – 26 11 18 – 19 22 – 11 3 3 – 13 20 7 – 24 11 19 – 13 20 6 18 8 15

Send your answer to me at TotalBlamBlam@DavidBowie.com with a subject line of: “Everyone Says ‘Hi’ Cryptogram”. As ever, please be sure to provide proof of a BowieNet account…either e-mail your entry from your BowieNet account, or supply your BowieNet user name if you mail from a non BowieNet account.

Five runners up will receive the highly collectable, and much sought after, ‘Everyone Says ‘Hi” promo CD. See ya down the shops on Monday morning!

Bowie Satisfies Parisian Virgin

We could run when the rain slows…

The Champs Elysées Virgin Megastore in Paris was host yesterday to the second David Bowie European signing session this week. Judging by BowieNetter Simone’s report on the MBs, yesterday was even more of a rushed affair than Monday’s session in London, mainly down to the fact that there were many more people to get through…Not that that spoiled anybody’s fun by all accounts. (Actually one account, Simone’s!)

As you can see from our pictures, kindly donated by photographer Philippe Auliac, David was resplendent in another striped number, a black and green jumper this time, and possibly another Paul Smith creation? Thanx to Simone and Philippe for their generosity.

Bowie Brings A Ray Of Sunshine To London

DB listens intently to a fan at yesterday’s signing
session at HMV – Photograph by Total Blam Blam.

We could run when the rain slows…

A wet and grey Monday morning in London’s West End yesterday, did nothing to dampen the spirits of hundreds of David Bowie fans at the HMV signing session in Oxford Street. David, looking as cool as ever in a black and white striped Paul Smith shirt (see detail below), laughed and chatted with incredulous fans who couldn’t quite believe their good fortune.

Many BowieNetters have asked me to pass on their thanks to the event’s organisers for what was a most successful day. All of the 150 competition winners went away very satisfied clutching a signed copy of ‘Heathen’, and the memory of a few cherished moments with David Bowie. However, it is reported that approximately 1,000 fans that weren’t lucky enough to win a wristband, had to satisfy themselves with a distant glimpse of the man.

It wasn’t any old black and white stripe…just look at the detail in that!

The event caught the imagination of the media here in the UK, with reports throughout yesterday on news broadcasts and pieces in this morning’s tabloids…not to mention several online postings. The tabloids seemed to focus more on the fact that David had stocked up on a few DVDs more than anything else though.

Among the titles that HMV refused to take any cash for were, the very hilarious Peter Kay’s Phoenix Nights, The League of Gentleman, Morecambe and Wise, and the frankly childish Paddington Bear and Andy Pandy. David, allegedly, also showed some interest in Muffin The Mule. He rounded of his little shopping spree with the latest release by Ash, ‘Intergalactic Sonic 7″s: The Best of Ash’. What a scrounger! };-)

You can view an online version of last night’s Liquid News broadcast here, (scroll along to 17.53 minutes) and the following reports by clicking on each relevant shortcut. DotmusicAnanovaBBCITVNME

David is due to do an instore signing at the Champs Elysées Virgin Megastore today, any reports from BowieNetters present at the signing will be most welcome.

TV UPDATES: You may notice in some of the above reports that David’s appearances on Parkinson and on Later With Jools Holland have now been confirmed. The shows record on the 19th and 20th of September respectively, but unfortunately it looks like BowieNet will have no ticket allocation for either of these shows.

Tom Hanks will be the other guest on Parkinson, which will be broadcast later as the first episode of the new series. David will perform a couple of songs on the show and he’ll obviously be interviewed by Parky.
