Bowienetter Saxonny On Air Shortly

Saxonny throws a moody, in typically alternative style.

I am a DJ, I am what I play…

Ahead of David’s show in Columbus tonight, and as visitors to the BowieNet MBs are well aware, our very own Saxonny is about to bare her soul by spinning a bunch of Bowie and mainly Bowie-related discs on the #1 alternative radio station in Columbus, CD101.

Sax tells me that If you’re in the greater Columbus area you can tune in directly, (I think that may be aimed at DB) and that the rest of you can listen online by clicking on the image above and clicking on the listen live link.

The show starts at noon EST and Sax has a very special guest phone in that you’re going to want to listen to. It’s worth tuning in as soon as you’re able as they seem to be plugging Sax’s slot already. (Should I reword that?)

Anyway, good luck girl, you know we’re all behind you.

DB in Moline last night. Click on picture for more of Erik’s shots in Virtual Ticket now.

I caught Moline at the top of the hill…

The Mark Of Quad Cities in Moline was the venue for the 95th show of David Bowie’s A Reality Tour last night.

There’s one online piece that I’m aware of by Sean Leary from Quad Cities online (an edition of The Dispatch), entitled: Bowie rocks Q-C crowd with career-spanning set, which you can read here.

In the absence of reviews from any attendant BowieNetters, Zigalicious over at accomplished drag act Paul Kinder‘s quite brilliant BowieWonderWorld, has posted an excellent review on the message boards there. Today’s lyric quote is a direct reference to an observation made by Zigalicious: Another great moment was when DB said. “Moline! Sounds like a Chuck Berry song… are you a Chuck Berry song? Maybe in here right?” (patting his hand over his heart).

I’m presuming that song is Maybelline. Anyway, you can read that whole review here… Thanx to Zigalicious and PK. Hope you don’t mind us using your quote.

New Film Now In Vt: Japan Chapter 2 – Karaoke

Like some cat from Japan…

To help dull the pain for those of you not attending a Bowie show this Saturday night, (those of you going to the show at The Mark Of Quad Cities in Moline are banned from reading further) I thought I’d post the second in Anthony‘s Japanese films.

This is one of my very favourite of Ant’s contributions so far and it really highlights what a great imagination he has, not to mention brilliant editing skills. Considering the title of this episode, I’m giving nothing away when I say there is Karaoke content in this film.

Perhaps that would normally constitute a warning of some kind, but I have to be honest and say this portion of the six-minute film brought a tear to my eye… and not for the reasons you’re probably imagining. As much as there is humour in this, it’s also a moving piece that I can’t quite explain the power of, but that I’m certain you’ll all love. Boy, the years are making me soppier as I get older!

Again, these stills don’t really hint at the brilliant content of this second instalment. But, if you’re a BowieNet member you can find that out for yourself by clicking on any one of them to get to Virtual Ticket.

Thanx again Anthony, it’s clear you have a very bright future ahead of you indeed.

Milwaukee Pictures, Set List And Review

“I’m torn between the light and dark…” DB in Milwaukee

I gazed a gazely stare at all the Milwaukees here…

David Bowie played the 93rd show of his A Reality Tour at the Milwaukee Theatre in Milwaukee, WI, last night.

I’ve had no BowieNetter reviews as of yet, but there has been one online review by Dave Tianen from this morning’s Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, entitled: Entertainer Bowie wears status lightly – Songs have held up well, and, at 57, so has the singer, which you can read here.

Here’s, the officially-confirmed 25-song setlist courtesy ofHNB:

“Could I have the pleasure of the next dance, David?” Slicky turns on the charm
at the post-show backstage disco. Apparently, this is how DB and the band and
crew always unwind after a gig. You should see David do The Shag. You wish!

BowieNetter hunkydory88 did make a couple of brief observations on the MBs, primarily that after NKS David’s shoelace came untied for the first time on the tour… according to DB at least. hunkydory88 says there then followed a dramatic shoelace-tying ritual, as evidenced by one of Erik’s pictures in VT.

hunkydory88 also quoted David as saying this before the encore: “I couldn’t do three songs from Ziggy…so, I’ll do three songs from Ziggy!” He’s a one.

A Reality Tour continues tonight at the Murat Theatre in Indianapolis.

Pittsburgh Pictures, Set List And Reviews

“The paintings are all your own…” Is this girl a BowieNetter?
Step forward and identify yourself…you talented thing you.***

It’s too late – to be grateful…

David Bowie played the 92nd show of his A Reality Tour at the Benedum Centre in Pittsburgh, PA, last night.

Those of you puzzled by today’s lyric quote, above, will understand when I tell you that the encore was truncated to just one song for last night’s show, due to very strict curfew rules. By all accounts David made up for it with a highly-charged Ziggy Stardust.

Here’s, the officially-confirmed 26-song setlist courtesy of HNB:

Pittsburgh May 17th 2004

“Gimme your hands ‘cos you’re wonderful…” Just look at the excitement of those watching!

BowieNetter NAZZZ66 posted a great review on the MBs which members can read here, and from which also, this snippet:

By Now I am sure you have seen the Set list from last night’s show in Pittsburgh…and there is little that I can add in regards to the performance, other than I thought it would’ve been difficult to top the show In Hershey. Well, once again I am wrong! 😛 Last night’s show was pretty intense and David was confidently focused on the Delivery of the material.

Biiiiig Stand out was Station To Station! Oh My God! The Duke was back for an instant, only to be dispatched to the de-contamination chamber of David’s soul, once the song ended and the next began.

Three Hunky Dory songs back to back! YAY! Not in order but there was Quicksand, Life On Mars, (incredible Mike/David duet beginning, would love to see Mike Garson and David Bowie Cabaret tour!) and Changes. David Turns to Gail and says “Ch Ch Ch.. You know THAT one?” with a teasing wicked grin on his face.

————————————————————————————————————-

Also from BowieNetter stevevolk is this marvellous review worth posting here in its entirety… particularly as he didn’t post it on the boards…

Well, that may have been the best I’ve ever seen him–and oh, have I seen him.

I’m from Pittsburgh, originally, but this was the first time I ever caught the Dame in my hometown, and I’m pleased to say it was like a home crowd for David Bowie.

Bowie changed my life, early, giving me an influence at a tender age that was so profound that it would be hard for me to sort out all the ways it altered my course. Anyway, last night’s crowd in Pittsburgh slathered DB in hot buttered love after nearly every song and he seemed genuinely disappointed when the curfew imposed by management proved unshakeable. Last night was one of those 30-plus song nights in his heart, I think, but we didn’t quite make it that far.

I took an ex and maybe future girlfriend to the show–her first ever Bowie concert, which for me was an exercise in opening up a big part of my own life to someone very special to me. She is so removed from all things Bowie that afterward she made observations like, “I think he might be from outer space” without realizing that particular observation has been made before. What a moment!

DB is 57 now, yet the same thoughts people had when they saw him appear as Ziggy Stardust are evidently still being had today–and by Bowie virgins at that. “I think he might be from outer space,” she said, which about sums him up, doesn’t it? That voice, really the sheer audacity to sing like that–so dramatic, so emotional, so Anthony Newley, so rock and roll supper club.

“It feels good just to look at him, doesn’t it?” she asked. Yeah, “Moondust will cover you” offers two promises–obliteration and benediction, the saving grace of moondust. Somehow just looking at him does suggest such things are possible.

I looked over at her during “Under Pressure” right after Bowie pointed toward the ceiling (excuse me, the sky) with both hands and jabbed his fingers upward, punctuating every time Gail shouted “Love, love, love.” Bowie mouthed the words, too. Such a genuine moment: When I looked at my girl she was swooning, eyes closed, her face tilted up toward the sky.

Bowie showed off last night. Close fans know the way he will, every so often, during “Changes,” sing “Time– Ti -hi – hi- hime!” his voice suddenly ascending it’s own stairway to heaven and hitting an impossibly high note. He did it last night, and God how I hate to dwell on this man’s age–but he is 57! Jesus God he is 57 and would you just watch him go.

I’ve seen him enough now to know that often his physicality dictates how great a night it will be, and last night’s show was intensely physical from the jump. He stared into the palm of his hand as if it were a mirror, preening during “Fame” and I knew he was locked into the words of his songs and was gonna give ’em to us like little jewels from his pocket. I had told this girl that, hey, there is a particularly spiritual section of the show I think you’ll enjoy, which to me meant the “Sunday,” “Heathen,” “Under Pressure” triumvirate. But fuck me if all of it isn’t spiritual–if the whole damn show doesn’t offer up nourishment for the ghosts we are.

“I thought the whole show was spiritual,” she told me afterward, “but I thought maybe it was just me.” Nah, it’s not just you.

He can sing “Heroes” a thousand times more and it will still offer catharsis. I hope he sings “The Loneliest Guy” for years to come–that may have been the most intimate moment I’ve ever had with David Bowie. My oh my if it didn’t feel like he was singing to each of us individually. I hope I’m not giving anything away, but the critic from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette walked over to me and said, “That was awesome–so chilly and dramatic.”

Yeah, I think they turned up the air-conditioning for that tune.

Well, I could go on and on, and I’m afraid I have. If I had the time I’d make it shorter.

————————————————————————————————————-

Thanx for sharing, Steve. You write very well indeed… but, I guess you know that.

I’ll leave you all with links to a couple of great online reviews from the Pittsburgh Tribune and the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

A Reality Tour continues tomorrow at the Milwaukee Theatre.

***Well, I’ll be Damned. The talented lady holding her painting of David turns out to be none other than BowieNetter strangeronthetown, aka April. Members can view a larger version of her painting, plus some of her shots from the show and a brief review by clicking here.

Fairfax Pictures, Set List And Reviews

DB throws another Rock God shape in Faifax last night.

And here are we, At the Patriot Centre of it all…

David Bowie played what was officially the 91st show of A Reality Tour at the Patriot Centre in Faifax, Washington, VA, last night.

Inseparable BowieNetters, Saxonny and Gwnavere, sent in a couple of brief impressions. Firstly, Sax’s review concerns itself mainly with the title track from Station To Station, a track she claims never to have heard, to the point of not knowing what album it’s from! I’m sure this is a humorous wind-up aimed at Keiths or somebody, otherwise she has just been awarded the BowieNet dunce cap! Kids eh? Must try harder!

First off, DC is a gorgeous town. I believe that Washington designed it to humble foreign dignitaries when they first arrived, and it did that. White marble abound EVERYWHERE. The concert was right over the Potomac in Virginia.

My main comments have to do with Station to Station. Last night was the first time I have ever heard that song and WOW! (do NOT ask me what album it’s on cause I DON’T KNOW!) But the band just came aLIVE during the song. Everyone on stage looked like they were having SO MUCH FUN PLAYING IT! David let loose, I have NEVER seen Cat groove harder and I swear she was laughing for half the song, Gail was rolling her head gracefully which if I tried that I would fall over dizzy. Earl and Gerry were swaying and being total rock stars and Mike Garson was being…Mike Garson. Just…what an amazing song. Again, I am blown away by the revamped versions of the old classics. The Supermen: wow. Quicksand: wow. Panic In Detroit: eh. Not one of my faves, but whatever.

Seeing the show with a best friend who is 1) a Bowie virgin 2) new to Bowienet (Nuclear Baby) made my evening. Three six foot tall girls rocking out at a concert. And I’m blown away by Gwn: we were 30 rows back, kind of at the back of the floor, and somehow she manages to catch Bowie’s attention and get a wave and a wink. It’s like Where’s Waldo? How the hell does she DO that???

Heh heh… good stuff Sax. Before Gwn has her say, here’s, the officially-confirmed 27-song setlist courtesy of HNB:

Fairfax May 16th 2004

01 Rebel Rebel
02 Fashion
03 New Killer Star
04 Cactus
05 Sister Midnight
06 Hang On To Yourself
07 All The Young Dudes
08 Fame
09 China Girl
10 The Loneliest Guy
11 The Man Who Sold The World
12 Panic In Detroit
13 Hallo Spaceboy
14 Sunday
15 Heathen (The Rays)
16 Under Pressure
17 Station To Station
18 Ashes To Ashes
19 Quicksand
20 The Supermen
21 Loving The Alien
22 Modern Love
23 White Light, White Heat
24 I’m Afraid Of Americans
25 “Heroes”

(Encore)
26 Suffragette City
27 Ziggy Stardust

OK, on to Gwn’s piece… so to speak:

“Some Cat was layin’ down some rock ‘n’ roll…” Cat and DB in full flight last night.

Fairfax review by Gwnavere

This is short and sweet. We had an excellent pre-meet up with a mix of all ages and types of fans. So many familiar faces, so many wonderful new ones, and lots of those answering to “I’m new to Bnet…hi.” Sax, NuclearBaby and myself made it on over to the venue early and caught the full Stereophonics set. They were great – kind of a garage band rock sound and they were totally groovin. Very humble and really held onto that “old fashioned” style of performance.

The show…sitting around row 25 didn’t stop the 3 of us from having a good time (like we’d ever not have fun?). Standing through the show, David and the band came out with all smiles. Quite another Chatty Cathy from our man, Gail in excellent duds, Kat’s great hair, Earl’s forever coolness, steadfast Mike, good ole Green Flagged Gerry and a steady Sterling kept us totally enthralled. The standard set list with another great healthy dose of Quicksand and The Superman with a totally orgasmic rendition of Station To Station.

I’ll tell you what, for a song that hit it’s peak before I was even thought of, it still holds a special place in my heart and I’d never ever thought I’d hear it in my lifetime – only envy all those before me that were able to hear it on it’s first run. Rock on to those that have already run their Bowie gauntlet!!

But, the tissues were about to come out when David broke out the lyrics (complete with music stand) for something we hadn’t heard in the US (at least, I don’t believe) since Carnegie Hall: Loving the Alien (acoustic). Tore down the house as the older yuppie crowd cheered on (many saying that they hadn’t seen him since Serious Moonlight) saying that he was BETTER than ever. All in all, a fantastic concert…..ROLL ON COLUMBUS!!

————————————————————————————————————-

Thanx ladies, very kind of you to fight your morning after conditions to get these pieces to us. I’ll leave you with links to a couple of great online reviews from the Washington Times and the Washington Post.

A Reality Tour continues tomorrow at the Benedum Centre in Pittsburgh.

Vieilles Charrues Festival Tickets On Sale Now

It’s happening now…

Just a quick reminder to tell you that tickets for the Vieilles Charrues Festival on Friday July 23 are on sale today, as we told you recently. (05.06.04 NEWS: BOWIE CONFIRMED FOR VIEILLES CHARRUES FESTIVAL)

Tickets are available via fnac.com and you can reach the relevant online page by clicking on the image above.

By my reckoning, that just leaves tickets for the Dragon Festival in Portugal to go, and as I said a couple of days ago, this sale has been delayed until next week.
