Reality In London…one Year Ago Tonight!

It was a day in that blue month September…

As I post this, it is exactly a year since David Bowie took to the stage at the Riverside Studios in London’s Hammersmith to present his Reality album.

Despite playing to a small audience of fans and friends at the actual venue, many more would witness the event via a live feed to cinemas around the globe… not to mention later broadcasts and the fact that the Reality section of the show became available on disc.

Well, I’m sure you’ve all seen a recording of the show by now, even if you weren’t actually present on the day. But, you won’t have seen these unpublished pictures I present here in celebration of the event, as I haven’t posted them before.

Neither will you have seen the pictures I’ll be posting over the next couple of days from that beautiful night exactly one year ago. Enjoy!

Five Ultra-rare Signed Tour Prints To Be Won

You never know you might find it here…

I noticed a recent debate on the MBs regarding the origin of the picture that Rex Ray used in the design above. As you may or may not know, it’s a picture that I took and I certainly made no secret of at the time.

Rexy used the image to advertise three shows back in January and I managed to get a handful of these beauties signed by both Rex Ray and David Bowie himself.

Being the photographer, (and much to my embarrassment) I was persuaded to stick my moniker on the things too. But don’t worry, winners of this competition can choose to have a print with or without my scribble, but still complete with Rex Ray’s and DB’s signature.

Anyway, we have five of these highly-collectable prints (one signed by DB went in a recent charity auction for $275) to give away to the first five people drawn out of the hat with the correct answer. So, I suppose you want the question, as if you hadn’t already guessed it:

When and where was the shot above taken? You need be no more specific than the country and the date.

Send your answer to me at TotalBlamBlam@davidbowie.com with a subject line of “Signed Reality Tour Print”. Usual rules apply: You must send from your BowieNet account or at least provide your BowieNet username. Only one entry per account name.

The competition is open until midnight UK time on Friday September 17th and the five names that The Random Generator (TRG?) spits out will be announced the next day. As ever, the best of luck to each and every single one of you!

Sony Reissue Winners

You win…

This was a pretty easy one wasn’t it? A lot of BowieNetters entered and not many gave wrong answers. So, first up, here are those answers:

Q1. David himself created the painting that appears on the cover of 1. Outside. What is the name of that painting?

A1 Head of DB and The Dhead – Outside were both acceptable answers for this one. Even Head oof DB was allowed. (That last one will make perfect sense to a few of you!)

Q2. A track was released ahead of Earthling that hinted at the new direction. It was initially an internet only release, but was later issued as a legitimate 3-track 12″ vinyl and CD single. What was that track?

A2 Telling Lies

Q3. Many of the songs that ended up on ‘hours…’ started life for a different project altogether. What was that project?

A3 The Eidos Interactive computer game: Omikron: The Nomad Soul

The five BowieNetters who got all three questions right and were lucky enough to be picked from a huge bucket of correct answers by The Random Generator, are listed below:

moss
edji1
voyage
kimbaruss
fidelio

If you’re one of the above, please send me your real name and address and we”ll get these beauties out to you as soon as possible. Well done folx. That’s all.

Db In Q Top 20 All Time Best Songwriters

Wonder: “Hey Jagger, what does this Ziggy Bowie dude look like?”
Dylan: “Different each time I look, Stevie. Looked like me once!”
Bowie: “Hi, Robert Zimmerman, I wrote a song for you.”
Cobain: “DB… Didn’t you write that Lulu song? I like that one a lot.”

I wrote a song for you…

The current edition of Q magazine (October 2004) has a special on ‘The Greatest Songwriters Of All Time. Needless to say DB is among the twenty chosen and he’s represented on the cover-mounted CD by Neil Hannon & Yann Tiersen‘s brave attempt at Life On Mars?.

Here’s a bit of what Moby has to say in the half-page Bowie feature inside the mag:

“The thing that always struck me is that he sings from the perspective of an older man even when he was very young. He’s always been a wistful observer, and that’s why his best songs are ones laden with pathos and despair.”

You can read more regarding this edition at the Q website, which can be reached by clicking on David’s eye-patch in the above detail from the Q fold-out montage that graces the cover of this edition.

International Reality Dvd Viewing Party Day

Come together, party…

As regular visitors to the MBs will already know, BowieNetter RogInLA has hit upon the excellent idea of an International Reality DVD Viewing Party Day. He posted details of his simple but effective plan on the MBs a couple of weeks ago and it really seems to have taken off.

The idea is that BowieNetters from around the globe will get together on the first Saturday after the DVD’s release to view the film with like-minded people while making the day a bit of an event at the same time. (I’m praying they don’t shift that release date!)

I have to point out that, as good an idea as it is, this isn’t a BowieNet organised event and you’d be better off learning the details from RogInLA’s original post which you can reach by clicking on the image above.
