Space Oddity In All Time Top 10 Most Expensive Discs

Pssst… Wanna copy of the 1969 Space Oddity UK picture sleeve? That’ll be three grand to you, son.

Commencing countdown…

The current issue (December 2004) of Record Collector magazine is celebrating its 25th anniversary with a list of the 100 most valuable records of all time.

An unissued 1969 UK picture sleeve of David Bowie’s Space Oddity 45 stands at #7 in the list, commanding a cool £3,000! ($5,755USD)

Here’s an edited version of what Record Collector had to say about the disc:

**************************************************************************************************************

Space Oddity £3,000 (Philips BF 1801, 7″ in unreleased p/s, 1969)

In 1969, it was still relatively unusual to find picture sleeves with UK singles. They were very much the norm in America and across Europe, but British record companies still reckoned that it wasn’t an expense worth taking. So, when a previously undocumented picture sleeve was discovered in 1996 for David Bowie’s 1969 release, Space Oddity, even well-known Bowie collectors assumed it had to be a clever fake.

Nobody has been able to explain why the sleeve was printed and then not distributed, although, during his research for his David Bowie: World 7 Records Discography, expert Marshall Jarman was informed by a man who worked in Holland for Philips in the 60s that when Space Oddity was first released, stereo singles were still a novelty, and Philips had several stereo singles pressed up in Holland specially for the UK market as an experiment. Space Oddity would have been a likely subject for a marketing exercise of this kind, as the single made good use of effects, and was also inspired by developments in technology.

So Jarman speculates that as the UK stereo discs were pressed in Holland, there may well have been picture sleeves printed to go with them – after all, every other European country issued a picture sleeve, most utilising the same image seen here in various forms – and that for some reason the company decided not to use them after all. Just those two or three copies are known to have survived, hence the astronomical asking price.

**************************************************************************************************************

I did do a piece about this item here on BowieNet a few years ago, which I can’t locate right now. But, if memory serves, I approached the item with a little healthy suspicion. I’ll keep an open mind until the day I have a copy in my paws to inspect. There would be tell-tale signs if the item were fake, not least of all the paper stock, the way it was printed and even the design.

Another reason I haven’t been completely comfortable about this one, is the fact that all the known copies seemed to emanate from one record dealer. The fact that a limited ‘reissue’ version of the sleeve then became available at a much lower price from the same seller, did nothing to convince me of the validity of the sleeve. Anyway, as I say, I have an open mind for now.

OK, now I’m going to rant, so if you’re easily bored I’d move on if I were you.

Attempting to evaluate the price of a rare record is an almost impossible task that the likes of Record Collector can only give a vague idea of. Obviously any item for sale is worth what the last person was willing to pay for it, and if eBay is a fair marketplace to get a picture of an artist’s current worth in the record-collecting market, then the Record Collector Rare Record Price Guide is wholly inaccurate. David Bowie is a great example of that.

I bought the latest edition (2006!), the first time I’ve bothered in six years, and while I appreciate how hard it must be to compile such a tome, there are unforgivable errors in this guide…particularly considering the book is “fully revised and updated” with each new edition,

Even taking in to account that this is a UK price guide, there are still ridiculous omissions from the UK listings of many major artists. If anybody from Record Collector is reading this, yes I can give several examples.

Anyway, even though I seriously collect lots of different artists, I’m sure the majority of you only want to know about some of the Bowie inaccuracies. Here are just a handful of the more expensive recent eBay auction results with the Record Collector valuation in brackets. Prices are GBP/USD, using today’s exchange rate.

Ebay item # 4007180247 – Davy Jones – You’ve Got A Habit Of Leaving/Baby Loves That Way – Parlophone UK 7″ 45 1965 – £875.00/$1,679 (RC = £500/$960)

Ebay item # 4041148082 – David Bowie with The Lower Third – Can’t Help Thinking About Me/And I Say To Myself – Pye UK 7″ 45 1966 – £340/$653 (RC = £140/$269)

Ebay item # 4039449229 – David Bowie – Do Anything You Say/Good Morning Girl – Pye UK 7″ 45 1966 – £417/$801 (RC = £175/$336)
(NB: A white label advance promo of the above, Ebay item # 4045589853, went for £592/$1,136 last month)

Ebay item # 4043483066 – David Bowie – Scary Monsters (and Super Creeps) – RCA “Semi-official” purple vinyl “Factory custom pressing” UK LP 1980 – £3,100/$5,947 (RC = £600/$1,151)

Sometimes, (though not very often) the eBay auction and the RC list price end up in a similar area, as with this item:

Ebay item # 4053213917 – The Manish Boys – I Pity The Fool/Take My Tip – Parlophone UK 7″ 45 1965 – £548.00/$1,050 (RC = £600+/$1,151+)

Another area where I think the guide fails those shelling out £25 for it, (hardback is £40) is its lack of consistency. For example, on page 646 of the 2006 edition, the 4-track EMI 7″ EP from 1979 containing two tracks each from Davy Jones and The Lower Third and The Manish Boys is listed for £12, while the 1982 10″ issue on Charly is listed at £18. Turn to page 776 and the very same records are listed at £10 and £7 respectively. The irony being that the far rarer 1990 CD reissue of the EP isn’t even listed!

This inconsistency is highlighted in the current edition of the mag in the aforementioned 100 most valuable records of all time listing. At number 53 the magazine claims that the rarest Smiths record is an unissued live Meat Is Murder EP test pressing, valued at £1,000/$1,916.

However, earlier in the very same issue, the magazine values a Reel Around The Fountain 7″ test pressing by The Smiths at £2,000/$3,832! It gets sillier…This £2,000 test pressing is listed in the 2006 guide at just £550/$1,052.

As I say, it’s not an exact science, but that’s just sloppy. So, before you take your old vinyl collection to your local second-hand record emporium, (where you’ll probably be offered around a third of the Record Collector list price) it may be an idea to try it on eBay first.

Inspired by a recent question posed by BowieNetter tonyday on the MBs, I do intend to resurrect the collector’s corner type column thing I started here on BowieNet a few years back. The main aim of the column was to guide buyers in the right direction when it comes to buying rare David Bowie items. The need for this advice seems all the greater with the amount of counterfeits and forgeries that abound right now.

If you have any specific questions regarding any rare Bowie items, drop me a line. If I can’t answer it directly, I probably know somebody who can. Send an e-mail to me at TotalBlamBlam@davidbowie.com with a subject line of “Rare Bowie Stuff”.

Iggy Pop South Bank Show Special Tonight

Iggy and DB, Leaving the UK via Heathrow, March 10th, 1977.*

I’ll give you television…

James Newell Osterberg, aka Iggy Pop, is the subject of this evening’s South Bank Show in the UK. The hour long arts show, presented by Melvyn Bragg, will air at 22:45 on ITV1.

No self-respecting Bowie fan should be unaware of the work of Iggy Pop. But, for the novices among you, here’s a brief and very condensed history lesson:

The pair’s professional association commenced in 1972 when David mixed Iggy and the StoogesRaw Power album. (Still the best mix, IMHO)

Their friendship continued through the years with Iggy becoming The Thin White Duke‘s travelling companion during the Station To Station tour, after which they both moved to Berlin and collaborated on two classic Iggy Pop albums, The Idiot and Lust For Life. Though Iggy’s name was on the cover, to my mind these groundbreaking records were just as much David Bowie albums as Iggy Pop.

Between the recording of the The Idiot and Lust For Life, and indeed between the recording of his own Low and “Heroes” LPs, David, with no fanfare, went on the road with Iggy to play keyboards and sing backing vocals on The Idiot Tour. Some of the shows were recorded for the live album, TV Eye…and the rhythm section of Tony and Hunt Sales would go on to become half of Tin Machine.

DB was to work with Iggy once again on the latter’s 1986 LP, Blah, Blah, Blah…A more commercial affair than The Idiot or Lust For Life, and containing Iggy’s biggest UK hit to date, Real Wild Child.

As I’m sure everyone is aware, David recorded his own versions of many of Iggy’s songs during the 80s, earning Iggy a taste of his first real money from the proceeds of the 1983 world-wide smash, the Bowie/Pop composition, China Girl, from Let’s Dance.

David also recorded many other Iggy Pop related songs (most of which were Bowie/Pop compositions anyway), such as: the Sister Midnight backing track for Red Money on LodgerDon’t Look Down, Tonight, Neighbourhood Threat, Tumble And Twirl and Dancing With The Big Boys on Tonight, and Bang Bang on Never Let Me Down.

DB has performed live versions of Sister Midnight (1976 and 2004) and Lust For Life …and then there are the songs he co-wrote but didn’t record his own versions of, such as Play It Safe and many of the songs on the three studio albums they recorded together.

As I write, I keep thinking of more, but that’s a start for those of you not already familiar. Of course, Iggy has had an incredible career outside of his work with David, and it was the first couple of Stooges albums that first alerted young Mr Jones to the incredible music of Iggy Pop.

If tonight’s South Bank Show is anywhere near as good as The Velvet Underground documentary produced by the programme a few years back, you’re in for a real treat.

* The shot I’ve used above is of Iggy and David fresh from six dates of the UK leg of The Idiot tour on their way to continue the tour in Canada. Though you wouldn’t know it from David’s expression, this flight was to be the first time he had flown in years. On the pair’s arrival in New York, David said to journalist Lisa Robinson: “I flew for the first time in five or six years. I think the aeroplane is really a wonderful invention.” He’s a one.

Vote For Db In Playboy Music Hall Of Fame

Playboy, I really get around…

BowieNet message board regulars will no doubt be familiar with this one, and indeed, I’m sure there are a few members that have already been banging away. But, for those of you that missed it, you may want to take part in the Playboy Hall Of Fame Music Poll by voting for our man.

No stranger to Playboy himself, (at least he’s appeared in it more than once, most famously in 1975…an interview, not a nude session) David Bowie is summed up on the Playboy site thus:

He set the bar for sheer showmanship. Despite a string of inventive albums and three decades of worldwide hits, Bowie never stopped reworking his image and his music, making glam masterpieces, slinky faux soul, indie rock and even drum and bass. The concert tour for his latest CD, Reality, was so successful it boosted Clear Channel’s earnings and warranted its own DVD. ***

DB is up against Chuck Berry, The Pixies, Nancy Sinatra and Talking Heads all deserving of somebody’s vote, but not yours! };-)

Click on the doo dah above to get to the voting page, Hall Of Fame is at the foot of the page. I feel duty-bound to point out that there seems to be a fault with the Playboy page in that it allows you to vote as often as you like. I know BowieNetters wouldn’t take advantage of this fact, but Chuck Berry fans aren’t so scrupulous… would you trust Keith Richards?

Those of you who prefer the traditional method of postal voting can find a voting form in the current issue (December) of Playboy…apparently.

*** Speaking of the Reality DVD, here’s a brief review by David Fear from the latest edition of Filter magazine:

It’s easy to forget that a single Thin White Duke is responsible for “All The Young Dudes” and “Heroes.” And when you consider that he’s, like, 137 years old and still moves around like Ziggy Stardust was five minutes ago, it’s impossible not to give the gent props.

This Dublin concert from last year shows rock’s Dorian Gray in great form, plucking live rarities from his back catalogue (“Five Years”?!?) and mixing them in his newer material. I’ll still take a diluted “Man Who Sold The World” over a hyper version of most other artists’ work any day of the week.

Mr Fear is clearly a man of taste, and as Filter’s tagline rightly states: GOOD MUSIC WILL PREVAIL.

Bowie Not Headlining At Coachella

Spreading rumours and lies and stories they made up… (Part 382)

This is a story that has grown to silly proportions, snowballing from a single message board post to news pages the world over, including making Billboard yesterday.

It seems the rumour was started on the Coachella message boards, where a supposed two-day line-up for April 30th and May 1st 2005 was posted, before being picked up by various fans sites and news pages such as Billboard, Undercover, Pollstar, Xfm and NME.

However, there is simply no truth in the rumour that David Bowie will headline the festival. Billboard, at least, did dig a bit further. Here’s an excerpt from their story:

Event organizers tell Billboard.com the rumored bill is not correct, and that offers have only recently began going out to prospective bands. What’s more, the exact date of the 2005 show will not even be confirmed for another month or so, according to Goldenvoice president Paul Tollett, whose company promotes Coachella.

Rest assured, if there are any gig plans for next year, you will absolutely hear it first via the BowieNet news pages.

World Aids Day – Support Apalumbo

Ride on for mile after miley…

BowieNetter Floidoip has been in touch to remind me that it’s World Aids Day today and to highlight the fact that education about this relentless disease is needed more than ever before, with the news that 38 million people globally now have the virus.

Click on the image above to reach the official World Aids Day site, where it’s worth spending some time today, if you’re not already familiar with the information there.

Jim (Floidoip), above, who has lived with HIV/AIDS for the past 23 years (Read his story in this BowieNet piece from a couple of years back: 12.01.2002 NEWS: WORLD AIDS DAY – A MESSAGE FROM JIM) sent in this regarding his recent charity walk:

The picture above is from the front page of The Ocean City Gazzette, Ocean City NJ, from the JWwalk (which took place on the Ocean City boardwalk) Atlantic City’s AIDS Walk on October 8th for South Jersey AIDS Alliance and the Infectious Disease associates, Atlantic City’s clinic which treats the vast majority of AIDS patients in the area.

The people in the picture are (from left to right), my friend Mary, me, another friend called Mary (BowieNetter Mandn) and her daughter Nicole. This is a letter I recieved from the Infectiuos Disease Associates;

The South Jersey Aids Alliance and Infectious Disease Associates of Atlantic City, New Jersey, would like to thank davidbowie.com for putting JWalkin’ on the internet. Mary Durnam/Mandn and Jim Hyde/floidoip raised over $500! What a response. Overall the race raised $3,500 with more checks coming in every day. These funds will be used to provide needed services for the many HIV/AIDS clients living in Atlantic and Cape May Counties of New Jersey. A special thanks from those who will be helped, they are truly grateful for your involvement.

As many of you will already know from the MBs, BowieNetter Apalumbo has registered to take part in the Red Ribbon Ride, a three day, 300+ mile bicycle ride that will take place next July in Minnesota. Here’s some info from Apalumbo, (real name Andrea Palumbo)

The ride benefits some fantastic AIDS service organizations here in Minnesota, all of which provide needed services to people living with HIV and AIDS. My fundraising goal is $1500 and I’m asking for your help.

Please make a donation to help me meet my goal! Your contribution (which is tax dedectible, BTW) will fund advocacy, education and direct care services for Minnesotans affected by HIV/AIDS. You can make your donation online by visiting my personal Ride page here.

If you would prefer to mail in a donation, you can download the form from Ride’s main web page, http://www.redribbonride.org – make sure you indicate that your donation is for Rider 25 – that’s me!

Thanks so much for considering making a donation – AIDS isn’t over yet, and won’t be for a long time, and there’s still a lot of work to be done. – Andrea

Andrea’s goal is to raise $1,500.00 – She’s achieved 12% of the total so far, so there’s a long way to go before July… Let’s show how generous BowieNetters can be.

Bowienetters Shine On World Aids Day

Boy, Thanks for not hesitating…

When I said in the story below: “Let’s show how generous BowieNetters can be”, I had no idea you would come through like this. As I posted the piece, Andrea‘s fund stood at around 10%. Less than a day later, BowieNet members have boosted the fund by over 90% to reach the target with an incredible $1,505!!!

I have a sneaky feeling that Andrea’s expectations will be even further exceeded by the time she takes part in the three day, 300+ mile bicycle ride in Minnesota next July.

As you can see from the random selection of donations in the box, you can donate any amount you want to. Click on the button above if you wish to pledge some cash.

A big thank you to everybody who has donated so far from everybody involved. It’s moments like this that make me proud to be a BowieNetter.
