Live Kashmir Webcast Tonight

Someone passed some bliss among the crowd…

For those of you that won’t get a chance to see Kashmir live on their current tour of Europe, you may be pleased to learn that their sold out show at the Paradiso in Amsterdam tonight will be broadcast live by fabchannel.com.

Regular visitors to these news pages will know that the band covered Memory Of A Free Festival in Berlin (02.05.2006 NEWS: KASHMIR COVER BOWIE LIVE IN BERLIN) a song they’ve apparently included in their set at shows since that date.

Apart from Memory Of A Free Festival, you can also expect to hear The Cynic in tonight’s set, the song Kashmir roped David in as guest vocalist for on their No Balance Palance album. Sadly he won’t be there to sing his part, but by all accounts singer Kasper Eistrup has risen to the occasion and has handled David’s part admirably. (Oooer missus…snigger, cough, etc.)

The show is due to start at 20:30, Amsterdam time. Click on the image above to get to the fabchannel.com site. If you’re reading this after the event, don’t worry, the webcast will remain online for a time.

Thanx to BowieNetter 051060 for the pointer.

051060 also sent in the above article from his local paper, which he has very kindly translated for us…I won’t be so rude as to go through and make any corrections, as 051060’s English is a whole lot better than my Dutch will ever be. Here follows the majority of the piece…

Kashmir gets support of ‘mister Bowie’
The big break-through will be there

The best British pop music comes from Danmark. The band is called Kashmir, named after the Led Zeppelin song, the favourite song of Kasper Eistrup & co. They are very popular in Scandinavia and Germany, but the big break-through is still a dream. Now there’s not only a great new album, there’s also a seal of quality: David Bowie, Lou Reed and Tony Visconti are the world famous rockers who contributed to the Kashmir CD ‘No Balance Palace’.

Just a few days before the hectic European tour (19 concerts in 22 days) Eistrup (singer, songwriter, composer, poet, artist) tried to explain the lack of success. “We don’t have an exciting history of drugs, homosexuality, crime or whatever. We’re just guys with lovely girlfriends. That’s not interesting for press. Also our music is not hot for radio; you have to grow up with us. We’re changing all the time, but not with a strategy.

“‘No Balance Palace’ was becoming a guitar record, much noise and ambient, no ballads.” Brilliant miniatures of melodies, full of sphere and dynamics, with remembrances to bands like Sonic Youth, Smashing Pumpkins, Television, The Cure, Sigur Rós and the German electrics Neu.

The last named was in the seventies the source of inspiration to David Bowie. His albums like Low (1977) until Scary Monsters and Super Creeps (1980) are in the remembrances of Eistrup. And now he has an interesting story! He was surprised to hear that ‘mister Bowie’ was a fan of Kashmir and also ‘mister Bowie’ wanted to do a song with them, the new single ‘The cynic”. “Unbelievable, it’s an honour. I met him one and a half years ago in New York and I spoke with him. He said immediately he knew our band and also that he had bought the last two CDs (The Good Life and Zitilites). I was shaking, proud and shy, you may know.”

“The meeting was arranged by producer Tony Visconti, who was at the beginning of Bowie’s career. He was more than willing to work with Kashmir. I had bought tickets in New York to see a PJ Harvey concert when Tony rang and asked if I intended to see The Killers instead at the Irving Plaza. ‘You have to come’, Tony said with pressure on me. So I went upstairs and David was there and said: ‘Hi, hello, Kasper’. I didn’t know what to say. Later that night he gave me a lift in a luxurious Lincoln car. He’s so relaxed and interested in arts and culture. We are very glad that mister Bowie is on our album. By the way it was the first time after his heart attack that he’d sung again.”

Duncan Jones French Connection Advert On Uk Tv Sunday

He’s the savage son of the TV tube…

When Trevor Beattie of the BMB Agency predicted great things for Duncan Jones in 2006, (01.03.2006 NEWS: INDY TIPS DUNCAN JONES AS MEDIA STAR OF 2006) he stated that “He’s currently working on what I think will be one of next year’s commercials of the year”.

Well, I’m not sure if Trevor was talking about Duncan’s Fashion v Style advert for French Connection, but the film certainly fits the description.

The 90 second ad premieres on TV in the UK during the new Sky screening of 24 at 9:00pm tomorrow evening (Sunday). Then it will be on again during The Brits coverage in the week, and various other places including cinemas…and most likely even on the world-wide information super-highway too. For those of you not in the UK, we hope to have a streaming version available for BowieNetters to view shortly.

The grabs above don’t really give much of a clue to the content, suffice to say it’s a particularly classy bit of work that betrays a wonderful sense of humour on Duncan’s part. The two girls in the film, Carley Harrop (the blonde) and Talia Santoa, are incredible and could whoop the arse of even the butchest of BowieNetters, seeing as how they aren’t just pretty faces, but real life stunt girls!

The beautiful accompanying operatic music was written specifically for the advert, including lyric contributions from Duncan, even if they are sung in Italian… Any translations from Italian BowieNetters would be most welcome.

Mick Rock Update

I asked for an autograph… (Or ten)

Winners of the signed copies of David Bowie and Mick Rock‘s Moonage Daydream book (01.01.2006 NEWS: SPOT THE BALL WINNERS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR) will be pleased to learn that I finally managed to corner Mick in a room long enough yesterday to get him to sign the things. Watch out for your postperson over the coming days.

Mick also confirmed that there will be an official David Bowie/Mick Rock 2007 calendar available towards the end of the year, more details of which we’ll supply nearer the time.

Labyrinth Released On Sony Psp

I, I will be Goblin King…

I know there’s an incredibly high percentage of you reading this that are honorary members of the Labby Kids Club and Labyrinth-related events are as popular as ever. (07.04.05 NEWS: LABYRINTH OF JARETH MASQUERADE SOLD OUT)

Well, though it’s been out for a while, it seems some of you have missed the fact that the full-length widescreen film has now been released in the Region 1 territories in yet another new format, Sony’s UMD Mini For PSP, which claims to be DVD quality.

Though it seems that the public aren’t going mad for this latest format just yet, let’s hope for Sony that it endures a little better than the Digital Compact Cassette (DCC) audio format released by Philips in the early 90s…I’ve still to find somebody with a machine that I can play my Ziggy Stardust DCC on!

Kashmir Cover Bowie Live In Berlin

Someone passed some bliss among the crowd…

As many of you already know, Kashmir are currently touring Europe and BowieNetter j_lope was there to see them at Friday’s show at the Postbahnhof in Berlin…from where she kindly supplied the shot above and a brief report.

As expected, the majority of the setlist came from No Balance Palance and Zitilites, including The Cynic from the former, the song the band recorded with David Bowie as guest vocalist.

But, according to j_lope, for the song before The Cynic, singer Kasper Eistrup announced: ?The next song is not from us?maybe you know who wrote it?? as the band proceeded to perform a touching keyboard-led version of Memory Of A Free Festival that evolved into a fully-blown-rock-out by the end of the familiar refrain “The sun machine is coming down, and we’re gonna have a party”.

I’ll hand over to j_lope for the rest…

———————————————————————————————————————–

After Memory Of A Free Festival, Kasper asked the audience if they recognised the song and who wrote it. Funny what people were yelling. I think I heard The Beatles several times! Don?t know, if anybody said it right?too much chaos…So Kasper said the name: ?David Bowie!?

Afterwards they played The Cynic: ?It was impossible for him to come here…? Kasper said… (indeed *sigh*) – and so bass player Mads Tunebjerg** sang the Bowie part.

———————————————————————————————————————–

You can read j_lope’s original post by clicking on the picture she took above, and you can see the remaining Kashmir tour dates on the official site, here.

**j_lope footnote: Seems I was wrong with the Bowie-part…*cough*…the bass player just sang the background voices…and the special Bowie-verse was sung by Kasper!

Bowie Gets Done By Police Woman

If you want it, boys, get it here, thing…

Those of you that have caught Rufus Wainwright or Antony and The Johnsons in concert recently may have marvelled at the talents of a stunning blonde multi-instrumentalist, one Joan Wasser, who somehow manages to bring even more glamour to proceedings…if such a thing were possible.

Well, now Joan has moved centre stage with her latest solo project: JOAN AS POLICE WOMAN. You could be forgiven for thinking the sleeve above was a depiction of the late Mick Ronson there for a second, but look again, it’s actually Joan on the cover of her latest release: My Gurl/Sweet Thing.

The B-side of this limited edition red vinyl 7″ 45 single is a wonderful version of the first part of David Bowie’s 1974 Diamond Dogs musical triptych, Sweet Thing.

Stripped down to just guitar, piano, Joan’s voice and just the right amount of interesting noises, this understated rendition is selling fast and has already become a collector’s item for fans of David Bowie and Joan Wasser alike.

My Gurl/Sweet Thing is available now through Reveal Records and if you’re lucky you may even get a free signed Polaroid taken and signed by Joan herself.

Learn more about JOAN AS POLICE WOMAN and indeed Joan Wasser’s impressive musical past via the various shortcuts in this very news piece.

NB: If you haven’t already, you can listen to Sweet Thing via Marc Riley’s Rocket Science listen again feature, (fast forward to 2:39) or simply tune in to his other show, Mint, on Sunday evening (ten till midnight UK time) when Manchester’s most famous philatelist will be playing the song again.

Low In Top 10 Most 'sinister And Beautiful'

Talking through the gloom…

In celebration of a new Audi vehicle, the March edition of Q magazine has teamed up with the car manufacturer to choose ten albums that best some up their Heart Of Darkness theme.

As you’ve gathered from the headline and text above, David Bowie’s classic 1977 Low album sits at #6, with an appreciation of the record (which you can read for yourself above) accompanied by a great 76 shot and another of DB with Iggy Pop on The Idiot tour taken a little after the time of Low‘s release.

Elsewhere in the magazine, (illustrated with a large shot of DB with Arcade Fire in Central Park) Q recommends the David Bowie and Arcade Fire Fashion Rocks live download EP, and while their kind words about the release may come a little after the event, they are appreciated just the same.

If you fancy reading that Fashion Rocks EP review and finding out who else made that Heart Of Darkness list, I’m afraid you may have to shell out for a copy of the mag, as Q have threatened to shoot me if I completely negate the need to keep their journalists in work.
