Young Americans Special Edition Contest Winners

Then you’ve never seen me hanging naked and wired…

We set this competition to win one of ten copies of the Young Americans Special Edition CD & DVD last week. (03.08.2007 NEWS: YOUNG AMERICANS SPECIAL EDITION CD/DVD CONTEST)

In it, we asked you to tell us which of the rumoured titles in the list below was never considered for the album before Young Americans was finally settled upon.

The Gouster

The ten BowieNetters below, who have been picked by The Random Generator as winners, all correctly stated that Naked and Wired (from a line in Win, see above lyric quotation) was the unconsidered title…even though it did make the grade as the name of a bootleg.

Db Recalls His Days At Furlongs In Tomorrow's Times

Another piece of teenage wildlife…

Tomorrow’s The Times (Friday’s edition) in the UK is running a full-page feature that David has written for Nokia’s Music Recommenders site about his time working in Furlongs at Bromley South as a teenager.

It’s a fascinating insight into how the power of recorded music affected the young Jones, and how he caught the recommender bug at an early age…a thrill that remains with him today, (See yesterday’s news) as confirmed in this brief excerpt:

———————————————————————————————————————–

“There really was no bigger thrill than telling somebody who needed impressing, ?You really have to hear this?, as I pulled out the latest by Nervous Norvis. I quickly realised that to recommend was an intoxicating power and it?s something that gives me a true buzz to this day.

Of course, I could only recommend when I could commandeer the shop?s state-of-the-art turntable. Vic liked to listen to his jazz ? Kid Ory and Joe ?King? Oliver were big favourites ? and he wasn?t particularly bothered if you didn?t much care for it.”

R.i.p. Russell Churney

Now I lay me down to sleep, and now I close my eyes…

Sad to report the passing of Russell Churney who finally succumbed to a 14-month battle with pancreatic cancer on 27 February 2007.

You will know Russell for his brilliant work with Des de Moor on their presentation and CD release of Darkness and Disgrace, mentioned many, many times on these pages, and good enough to draw comment from David Bowie himself.

I had the pleasure of meeting Russell a couple of times, and while apparently confident in performance, offstage he was an instantly likeable, incredibly charming and an often self-effacing man, particularly if you dared mention his name in the same breath as the likes of Mike Garson, whose work Russell did a very convincing job of imitating.

Apart from his musical abilities, Russell took on the task of speaking the Bowie quotations in the stage version of Darkness and Disgrace, and it has to be said, he had the sexiest voice this side of David Bowie.

You can read a lovely tribute to Russell from Des de Moor, a man who clearly knew him better than most, by going here.

Laminated Copy Of Hunky Dory Fetches $1,000 On Ebay!

I could do with the money…

To the amusement of normal people everywhere, a first pressing of the RCA UK Hunky Dory vinyl LP sold on eBay yesterday for almost one thousand US dollars. Five hundred and five British pounds to be precise.

You can read just why this particular copy is deemed so valuable by clicking on the image above and reading the original eBay description, but basically it’s because the sleeve is laminated instead of the far more common matt finish.

“What, an extra five hundred quid just because it’s shiny?” as my wife enquired with incredulous disbelief. Indeed yes…

This is not the first copy to surface in recent months, but the price is steadily rising, and though I have about twenty five vinyl copies from around the globe, including a couple of UK first pressings, I have to admit with some sadness that I don’t have a laminated sleeve.

Now, I’m sure I had a couple more Hunky Dorys kicking around in the loft…perhaps I just didn’t notice the shiny sleeve…see you later.

Db Pays Tribute As Bingenheimer Gets Fame Star

We’re choosing the path between the stars…

Rodney Bingenheimer was finally given the recognition he has long deserved with the 2,330th star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame yesterday.

David sent a message to his long-time friend via telegram, which read thus: “You getting a star is the high point of the season. We are all delighted for you.”

Regular visitors to these pages will know all about Rodney’s association with DB, and here are links to just two stories which highlight that association: 03.16.2004 NEWS: UNRELEASED DB ACOUSTIC TRACK OUT IN US TODAY & 02.10.2005 NEWS: SEE DB AND FRIENDS ON THE BIG SCREEN

Most online pieces seem to have used the same PA story, which I’ve posted below…

LA rock DJ Rodney Bingenheimer gets star on Walk of Fame

Dubbed the “Mayor of the Sunset Strip,” Rodney Bingenheimer launched the careers of such bands as Blondie and Blur on his long-time radio rock show. On Friday, the Los Angeles disc jockey received some glitzy gratitude: a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

“I can’t believe I started this in 1976 playing the Ramones,” said Bingenheimer in an emotional speech at the ceremony for the walk’s 2,330th star.

Guests included Brian Wilson, the Bangles, Bingenheimer’s sister and hordes of cheering fans.

“Once upon a time, three little girls pooled their daytime job money together to make a record. We have Rodney Bingenheimer to thank for playing it,” said the Bangles’ Vicki Peterson.

For 30 years, the unassuming Bingenheimer ? shy and thin, with a squeaky voice ? has hosted “Rodney on the Roq” on local radio station KROQ-FM.

He is known as the first DJ to play records by such bands as Blondie, the Ramones, the Sex Pistols, Duran Duran, the Cure, Joan Jett, No Doubt, Blur, Nirvana, Sonic Youth and Coldplay.

In the ’60s, Bingenheimer became Davy Jones’ stand-in on the TV series “The Monkees.”

His ’70s-era Hollywood nightclub Rodney’s English Disco attracted the likes of Iggy Pop and Led Zeppelin, jump-starting the L.A. glam rock movement.

In the 2003 documentary “Mayor of the Sunset Strip,” stars including Mick Jagger and David Bowie paid tribute to Bingenheimer and his journey from music fan to scene legend.

“You getting a star is the high point of the season. We are all delighted for you,” Bowie wrote in a telegram read Friday at the dedication ceremony.

————————————————————————————————————-

Well done Rodney, great to see people are finally beginning to understand just how important your contribution to music has been.

Thanx to BowieNetter mephisto for the pointer and the Documentary International magazine cover scan.

I’ll leave you with a Bowie quotation regarding Rodney from July, 1992: “Alone in L.A. Rodney seemed like myself, an island of Anglo ‘nowness’. He even knew British singles and bands that I wasn’t aware of. There was nothing about him that wasn’t ‘on’. Rodney single-handedly cut a path through the treacle of the 60’s, allowing all we ‘avants’ to parade our sounds of tomorrow, dressing in our clothes of derision.”

Extras Extras, Read All About 'em

David Bowie sniggers to himself as he spies yet another really very predictable Blammo headline.

Secrets secrets never seen…

We have more details regarding the region 2 DVD of Extras series two that we told you about last month. (02.20.2007 NEWS: EXTRAS REGION 2 DVD OUT NEXT MONTH)

It seems the extra footage that was filmed on the day that I mentioned previously, is to be included in the Backstage section of the DVD, which has specially filmed outtakes for each episode.

The Bowie interview is as funny as you would expect, in that it gives away a few of Ricky Gervais‘s comedy secrets, for which DB doesn’t mind taking credit.

Though the DVD isn’t released until March 26th through Universal Pictures Video, it seems the whole Bowie segment is already out there on popular video streaming sites.

Also, as well as the region 2 DVD of series two available on March 26th, there will be a box set of both series one and two (above) generally listed as available on March 26th. But the BBC has told me it won’t be released until April 5th, which makes more sense, and I guess they should know.

Thanx to the excellent BowieWonderWorld for the DVD trailer links below, available in Windows, Real and QuickTime movie formats.

    Windows: [Low]  [Mid]  [High]

    Real: [Low]  [Mid]  [High]

Sorry Paul, I couldn’t be arsed to code it all myself. 😉
