2008 H & M High Line Festival Set for May 7- 17th!

2008 Curator To Be Announced in Coming Months

New York, NY (May 23, 2007) ? The H & M High Line Festival ? a new festival of music, performance, film, comedy and visual art that will be curated by a different world-class artist each year ? drew to a close this past weekend, ending a ten day run of once-in-a-lifetime combinations of artists, experiences and events. Curated by the legendary David Bowie and produced by festival co-founders David Binder and Josh Wood, along with Live Nation, the H & M High Line Festival showcased an impressive array of artists including:

Air, Laurie Anderson, Arcade Fire, Bang on a Can All Stars, The Bellmer Dolls, Claude Cahun, Deerhoof, Dirty Projectors, Dragons of Zynth, Mike Garson with Chris Howes, Lance Horne, Ricky Gervais, Michael Gira, Kate Havneik, Daniel Johnston, The Legendary Stardust Cowboy, Laurie McLeod, Meow Meow incited by John Cameron Mitchell, The National, Ken Nordine, The Polyphonic Spree, Robert Stillman?s Horses, School of Seven Bells, The Secret Machines, TV on the Radio, and a 100 Year Retrospective of Spanish Language Film. Slated to return to New York in 2008, the H & M High Line Festival will take place next year from May 7th-17th with a new curator to be announced in the coming months.

What began with the May 9th, sold out, festival kick-off performance by Arcade Fire which the NY Times called an “indie-rock juggernaut” and “exhilarating,” and noted that “Arcade Fire used to seem too big for the little clubs it played. And for a few moments on Wednesday night, the band seemed too big even for this room,” officially concluded on May 19th, with the American stand up debut of Ricky Gervais. Gervais? sold out show at the Theater at Madison Square Garden which the NY Post called “totally hilarious” and commented on Gervais? “quietly brilliant nature of his observations” was made all the more memorable by the introduction of Gervais by Bowie who serenaded the comedian with “Chubby Little Loser,” a song he first performed on Gervais? hit HBO comedy “Extras.”

Other festival highlights included a prime triple bill performance of The Legendary Stardust Cowboy, Bang on a Can All Stars and Daniel Johnston, the latter who Jon Pareles of the NY Times called “a tenderhearted introvert, crooning in eclectic company,” as well as an appearance by Laurie Anderson at the newly opened Highline Ballroom. Anderson, who WWD called “one of those New Yorkers who assures other Manhattanites that their city is officially cool,” said of the H& M High Line Festival to Time Out New York: “I think festivals designed by artists are so much wackier and riskier than the ones designed by institutions.”

As the festival?s co-founder and curator, David Bowie programmed the diverse array of art and music, choosing some of the most interesting and provocative work he found personally inspiring.

“I am thrilled that so many came out to see the wonderful array of talent who took part in our first High Line Festival,” said festival curator David Bowie. “I am even more pleased that people had fun and were able to experience a great cross pollination of emerging and established talent in one cohesive festival.”

In addition, the H & M High Line Festival showcased the work of ground breaking, gender bending photographer Claude Cahun who the NY Daily News called the “perfect radical artists to be part of the first High Line Festival, curated by David Bowie.” Cahun?s work was on display in the garden of the General Theological Seminary of the Episcopal Church, a venue that provided a unique backdrop for Cahun?s work which was projected in a multimedia display. This exhibit also marked the first time the Seminary was opened for a public arts project.

Taking place in venues near New York City?s High Line neighborhood ? the elevated rail structure soon to open as a public open space, running through the Meatpacking District, West Chelsea and Clinton/Hell?s Kitchen – the H & M High Line Festival was also a vehicle to raise funds and awareness for the revitalization of the High Line and surrounding neighborhoods. A portion of the proceeds was donated to Friends of the High Line, the 501(c)3 organization currently working with the City of New York to transform the 1930?s rail structure into a park, set to open in 2008.

“We are elated with the array of programming and attendance for our first H & M High Line Festival,” says the festival co-producer David Binder. “We set out to showcase all that?s culturally diverse and wonderful about New York as seen through the eyes of one curator, and we were delighted that our vision was embraced by the many who came to support the festival and the acts.”

Added co-producer Josh Wood “Moreover, we were really happy to partner with such great supporters such as H & M, Live Nation, Garnier, Grolsch, Jet Blue Airways, Time Out New York, and Time Inc. to make the festival affordable and accessible for all, and especially to Friends of the High Line whose work in the neighborhood inspired our efforts.”

About Friends of the High Line

The High Line is a 1.45-mile-long elevated rail structure running through the West Side neighborhoods of the Meatpacking District, West Chelsea and Clinton/Hell?s Kitchen. It was built in the 1930s to remove dangerous trains from Manhattan’s streets. No trains have run on it since 1980. Friends of the High Line (FHL), a community-based 501(c)(3) non-profit group, formed in 1999 when the historic structure was under threat of demolition. FHL’s mission is to preserve the structure for reuse as an elevated public open space.

FHL gained the support of the City of New York in 2002. The High Line south of 30th Street was donated to the City by CSX Transportation Inc. in 2005. The team of Field Operations and Diller Scofidio + Renfro has designed the first section of the High Line’s public landscape. Construction began in spring 2006 and the first section, from Gansevoort Street to 20th Street, is projected to open in Summer 2008.

Atlantis Square Pants To Air In November

An artist’s impression of how Lord Royal Highness
may look on his arrival in Bikini Bottom or Atlantis.

I got so lost on the shore…

David Bowie exclusively revealed details of his participation in an upcoming half hour special episode of SpongeBob SquarePants in his journal last year. (10.05.2006 NEWS: SPONGEBOB SQUAREPANTS IN NEW BOWIE JOURNAL)

Now it gives us great pleasure to be able to exclusively reveal that this episode, Atlantis Square Pants, in which he plays the part of Lord Royal Highness, will air on Nickelodeon in the USA on 11/11/07.

David completed his contribution in October last year, and, as readers of his journal will know, it’s a project he was very excited to be involved with: “Oh Yeah!! We, the family, are thrilled” …and understandably so.

I’ve also found mention of an upcoming SpongeBob SquarePants book, My Trip to Atlantis, and the following details regarding a game entitled SpongeBob?s Atlantis SquarePantis, both of which may or may not be connected to the Bowie episode, but both being released toward the end of the year too.:

SpongeBob?s Atlantis SquarePantis — The game will follow SpongeBob and the rest of the Bikini Gang as they leave Bikini Bottom and journey to the legendary city of Atlantis. Players will discover the treasures of Atlantis, while experiencing new game mechanics and multiplayer features. SpongeBob?s Atlantis SquarePantis is scheduled to release for the PlayStation 2 system, Wii, Nintendo DS and Game Boy Advance this fall. In addition, SpongeBob SquarePants: Atlantis Treasures (working title) is scheduled to release for various mobile carriers.

If there is any connection, we’ll let you know as soon as we have more details.

Edited 30 Century Man On Alan Yentob's Imagine

Love You Till Tuesday… (Well, I might stretch it till Wednesday)

The current season of Alan Yentob‘s Imagine series will be screening an edited version of Stephen Kijak‘s Scott Walker – 30 Century Man at 10.35 pm on Tuesday evening on BBC1 in the UK.

It’s worth checking out even in this form, and there is a little of David Bowie’s contribution in this edited version.

Check out previous news stories if you aren’t sure what I’m talking about (01.22.2007 NEWS: SCOTT WALKER FILM FOR FESTIVALS PLUS VIEW TRAILER & 02.07.2007 NEWS: PRE-ORDER LTD SCOTT WALKER PRINT WITH DB QUOTATION & 04.06.2007 NEWS: SCOTT WALKER FILM FOR TRIBEKA PLUS UK SCREENINGS) and check out the BBC’s Imagine page for further information on this excellent series.

That Yentob lad has come on a bit since he did that Cracked Actor documentary.

Bowie Films Part For New Austin Chick Film

Fall into pieces…

Never happy sitting still, David Bowie filmed his part as a hard-nosed British CEO of a dotcom company on location in New York earlier this week, during the madness of The High Line Festival.

It’s a suit and tie role for David, and in it he apparently plays a bit of a hard man who eats newcomers for breakfast.

Starring Josh Hartnett and Naomie Harris, August is a film about two brothers fighting to keep their dotcom company afloat in August of 2001, a month before the 9/11 attacks, and it is directed by Austin Chick (XX/XY).

The film also stars Rip Torn, an actor who played his part in the downfall of another business entrepreneur, Thomas Jerome Newton, in a film made over thirty years ago.

August isn’t due a theatrical release until 2009, but meantime you can check out full cast list (excepting DB) over on IMDB. Click on the poster above to get to a much bigger version on the BowieNet MBs.

High Line Final Night Pix And Bowienetter Reviews

This is our last dance…

David Bowie’s High Line Festival finished with an exciting climax on Saturday night, with the possibility of attending three different events for those wishing to (or four if you managed to cram the Claude Cahun exhibition in too).

We reported on the night that David had introduced Ricky Gervais with a sing-a-long version of The Little Fat Man, (05.19.2007 NEWS: BOWIE PERFORMS THE LITTLE FAT MAN AT GERVAIS SHOW) and how the audience must have had its fair show of Bowie fans considering the enthusiastic greeting he received.

Later, Secret Machines, complete with new line-up, (as below, excluding the geezer in the middle) performed an awesome version of the 1980 Scary Monsters‘ classic track, Up The Hill Backwards, in a set primarily made up of new songs.

Apparently the Bowie cover wasn’t the only way our man’s presence was felt during the show. Towards the end of the evening, after DB was spotted in the balcony, (apparently lost in the music himself) the audience spontaneously erupted into a chant of: “BOWIE, BOWIE, BOWIE, BOWIE…”

David appeared touched by the acknowledgement and smiled and waved back to the crowd as he left. It was a lovely way for an audience to express their appreciation of a hugely successful festival which has surely raised the bar for the curator of next year’s High Line.

The evening concluded, for those that had the stamina, with an intimate Mike Garson performance at the Blue Note.

One BowieNetter who did wish to attend all three shows, and managed exactly that, was Simone. She gives a great account of her evening here on the MBs.

BowieNetter members can view larger alternative versions of the pictures above from the evening by going here.

Thanx to Gary Gershoff and WireImage.com for the use of all the exclusive shots during the festival. Without them these news pages would have been pictorially dull to say the least.

Finally, I’ll leave you with an account of that Mike Garson show from BowieNetter kscnyc who kindly sent in the picture and review below…

————————————————————————————————————-

Thank you for informing us about the Mike Garson gig at the Blue Note last night. It was wonderful, and included a couple of surprises! Ratzo Harris and Billy Mintz accompanied Mike on acoustic bass and drums, respectively. Mike said that he had only met the Ratzo an hour earlier, as opposed to Billy, with whom he had met eons ago playing together in the Catskills and had played with at Bar Mitzvah’s, etc.

Incidentally, Ratzo Harris was outside in line behind me enjoying a slice of pizza when he asked my friend and I whom we were waiting to see. I told him, and said that if he were interested he would need a reservation. He then said, “Oh thanks, maybe I’ll go”, and proceeded towards the entrance. I immediately recognized the “imposter” on stage-lol. I guess he wanted to see what kind of crowd was showing up.

Back to the show- Garson’s show featured some Jazz standards, including his arrangement of “Bésame Mucho” and at least one original song that he and Mintz had composed. Additionally, Garson took on the challenging Roberta Piket arrangement of a selection from “The King And I”. This was fitting, since Mike’s backing musicians comprised two-thirds of Piket’s trio. Harris and Mintz were afforded solo time, twice during Harris’ solos, he actually played with his chin!

The first surprise came at the end of the first set, when Mike announced a guest vocalist, the multi-talented Gail Ann Dorsey. She was as brilliant as she is beautiful. She sang a truly wonderful and stirring version of “Alfie”.

Garson opened his second set with his new arrangement, “Theme and Variations on Space Oddity”. Another surprise came late in the second set when Mike introduced the very talented Roberta Piket and invited her onstage to perform with her band. After a great performance, Mike joined her trio for a “four hands” performance with the two pianists sharing the one piano. That joint performance was quite exciting and entertaining as they played several call and response riffs and traded razor-sharp runs and juicy piano licks with each other.

Mike then closed the set at around 3:15 am and thanked his band, guests, and all of us who attended. What a treat it was to see a celebrated piano virtuoso with such a great rhythm section, joined by such stellar guests in a tiny venue, such as the Blue Note. On a side note, former Bowie drummer and band mate, Zachary Alford was in attendance and sitting with Gail Ann Dorsey and her friends. Thanks for the wonderful late night entertainment Mike!

Thanks so much for that kscnyc, a lovely end to what has been a hugely successful festival and the quickest ten days of my life…and I wasn’t even there. Honest guv.

Gervais And Secret Machines Close High Line

“He’s banal and facile, he’s a fat waste of space…”

I, I will be king…

Unbelievably, today is the very last day of David Bowie’s High Line Festival, and it’s fair to say it’s been a roaring success.

Ricky Gervais is the festival’s exciting climax, and here’s a bit regarding the festival from an interview he did with the New York Daily News earlier in the week…

————————————————————————————————————-

What do you think of the High Line reinvention?

I love the idea of nature in an urban background. New York and London are great at that – eking out oases in this concrete jungle. And it’s great that David Bowie has got behind something like this. He’s always there, isn’t he? I think of him of him like this strange futuristic sort of genie in the basement – rather like “The Man Who Fell to Earth.” He knows about everything. I give him a cultural reference that David Bowie shouldn’t know about and he knows about it. He’s like “Lawnmower Man.” I think he’s plugged himself into the World Wide Web.

Good luck for your New York show. You know you’re sold out?

I know. It sold out in 24 hours. There must not be anything else on that day.

————————————————————————————————————-

RICKY GERVAIS Presented by jetBlue Airways
May 19th 8:00pm: Theatre at Madison Square Garden, 4 Penn Plaza

As Ricky says, the show is utterly sold out, but there is something else on…

“Silhouettes and shadows…” Secret Machines throw a moody on a rooftop.

Slinky Secrets, hotter than the sun…

I’m pretty sure Secret Machines have sold out too, but it’s worth checking out the venue box office just in case: 212-414-5994

THE SECRET MACHINES with Michael Gira, The Bellmer Dolls, and Dragons of Zynth

A heavily disguised Mike Garson prepares for his secret show in NYC tonight.

Friday Night Pictures And More Bowienetter Reviews

“I’m doing Little Fat Man tomorrow, Laurie. So I need to look moody to throw them off the scent.

Well, you don’t know me, but I know you…

David Bowie was present at a couple of High Line shows again last night, when he attended both the Laurie Anderson (above) and the Meow Meow shows.

BowieNetter ladyofthelake caught Meow Meow, and she was pretty well blown away by the experience, as you can read by clicking on her name…a cunning technique I will employ for the remainder of this piece.

Apparently, Meow Meow tackled a bit of Rock ‘N Roll Suicide while threatening to take her own life at one point. BowieNetter loisroma was also there, and posted some great pix of Meow Meow doing something odd.

It seems a few of you were equally impressed by Laurie Anderson, but thus far, only BowieNetter breakingglass has posted anything…and that wasn’t exactly an in-depth review. She must be forgiven for the poor recollection though, as she was out with Leeza again and they were both probably off their tits on something or other, possibly.

BowieNetter members can view larger versions of a couple of WireImage.com pictures like the one above, by clicking on David’s tie pin. Thanx to Gary Gershoff and WireImage.com for the use of these exclusive shots once again.

Bowie Performs The Little Fat Man At Gervais Show

How DB may have looked tonight…milling around a bit and generally being a bit of a nuisance.

He sold his soul for a shot at fame…

David Bowie caught the audience at Ricky Gervais‘s sell out High Line show off guard tonight, when he introduced Britain’s funniest export with a rendition of The Little Fat Man (With The Pug-Nosed Face).

Apparently the show began with Ricky introducing David from the wings, who then strolled on to be greeted by an incredibly enthusiastic crowd.

DB encouraged the audience to join in with his a cappella version of the classic Bowie/Gervais/Merchant-penned tune, and apparently they rose to the challenge and made a jolly good fist of it…an apparently word perfect one at that.

Bowie, dressed in tuxedo, as above, then introduced Gervais and exited to deafening applause.

We’ll be posting proper WireImage shots of the occasion shortly, along with, hopefully, some of David with Secret Machines too.
