See Labyrinth Production In London Today

We’re choosing the path between the stars…

You may have already stumbled upon this in the press release section of BowieNet, above, but If you’re in the Kennington Park area of London today or tomorrow you may want to check out what promises to be an exciting diversion for the weekend.

For this afternoon at 4:00pm, the Oval House Theatre summer school presents the first of four performances over Friday and Saturday of The Labyrinth. Here’s a bit from aforementioned press release…

If you go down to Kennington Park in south London on Friday 17th or Saturday 18th August you may see more than the usual pigeons and squirrels lurking amongst the undergrowth! Oval House Theatre is once again using the park as the backdrop to stage a stunning large-scale open air show, created by 40 local youngsters. This year?s play is based on the story of The Labyrinth, a fairytale made famous by the movie starring David Bowie, and is an enchanting tale for audiences of all ages.

Debbie from the Oval House Theatre’s press office sent me a little more detail after I asked how close this production was to the original film…

————————————————————————————————————-

Hi Blam – I’ve spoken to the Labyrinth team. Julia Cole, one of the directors, says that the play is totally based on the film, they’ve seen it many times. All the young people playing the main characters have seen it especially for this production too.

They’ve used the same scenes as the film, although adapted into a more theatrical manner and to suit the park, obviously. They use a lot of the songs: “Magic Dance”, “Underground” and “As The World Falls Down”. They’ve made a ‘Bog of Stench’ with whoopie cushions and sound effects, and they have a giant puppet playing Ludo. The character of Jareth is played by young actor Tristan Fynn-Aidenu.

————————————————————————————————————-

You’ve still got a few hours to get along to today’s performances, and plenty of time to plan ahead for tomorrow. You can find all the extra information you need regarding this event in the press release.

Thanx to Adam Dean of www.bowiedownunder.com for the pointer to this story.

Franz Ferdinand And Keane Cover Bowie For Radio 1 Cd

Waiting for the gift of Sound And Vision…

The Sun newspaper in the UK has an exclusive report today regarding an upcoming compilation CD for which artists have recorded special cover versions to celebrate Radio 1’s 40th birthday in September.

The 40-track CD, due on October 1st, will include specially recorded versions of songs which originally charted in the UK between the years 1967 to 2006.

There will be one track representing each of the forty years, including two Bowie-relevant songs: Sound And Vision (1977) by Franz Ferdinand and Under Pressure (1981) by by Keane.

Franz Ferdinand’s love of David Bowie’s music has been well-documented on these pages in recent years, (10.07.2004 NEWS: DB DIGS FRANZ – FRANZ DIGS DB & 08.21.2005 NEWS: SCISSOR SISTERS AND FRANZ FERDINAND DO BOWIE & 09.22.2005 NEWS: ALEX K ON NEW LP INSPIRATION AND DB LYRICS) with news of at least two Bowie numbers covered by different incarnations of the band. (Suffragette City and Always Crashing In The Same Car)

However, it’s good to see that Keane are also keen (sorry) to cover a Bowie track, in the shape of the Bowie/Queen-penned classic from 1981.

Go here to see the full breakdown of all forty tracks.

Tony Visconti Compilation Cd Winners…a Bit

Oh no, don’t say it’s true…

Judging by the amount of entries we received for this, I’m guessing it was perhaps a little too hard for the majority of you to even consider taking part.

We asked: How many original UK David Bowie single release A-sides bear the name Tony Visconti as producer or co-producer? (08.03.2007 NEWS: TONY VISCONTI RETROSPECTIVE COMPILATION CD COMPETITION)

Well, I calculated somewhere around twenty eight, but, as unlikely as it seems, I reckon I may be one or two out either way…so I allowed a generous margin of error for you of five either way.

That means that if you guessed anywhere between twenty three and thirty three you were in with a chance of winning. Sadly, only these three BowieNetters were close enough!

Of course, we still have seven copies to give away, and we’ll be doing precisely that this time next week.

Happy 7th Birthday To Little Lexi Jones

Growing heart and soul…

I know it’s a bit of a cliché, but it really is hard to believe that it was seven years ago today that the above bundle of contentment entered the world.

Happy 7th birthday to you, Alexandria Zahra Jones, wishing you many happy returns of the day from everybody here at BowieNet.

Hope you have a wonderful day, Lexi, and that you demand everything a young girl needs from mum and dad at this very special time.

Members can leave their own and read others’ well wishes here on the MBs.
