Mercury Records releases The Boat That Rocked soundtrack today, just ahead of the release of Richard Curtis? new movie which is released on April 1st. Here’s a bit of blurb…

———————————————————————————————————————–

Bringing together some of Richard Curtis? favourite songs, many of which have never been cleared for soundtrack usage before, the soundtrack to The Boat That Rocked is truly integral to the movie. Compiled by Curtis himself, The Boat That Rocked soundtrack features some of the greatest songs from the 60?s and 70?s, as well as the odd gem from the 80?s (Bowie?s Let?s Dance). A new version of Stay With Me Baby performed by Duffy, meanwhile, provides the backdrop to one of the film?s most poignant moments.

———————————————————————————————————————–

Apparently Let’s Dance is actually featured briefly in a dance sequence led by Bill Nighy during the closing credits. Sounds like fun.

Again, there is all manner of Boat Rocking stuff at the official site which is right here.

Benassi Vs Bowie 3-track Dj Promo 12 And 8-track Cdr

What do I know?

I know there are enough of you interested in this stuff to warrant a news piece…if the rest of you could just humour us for a moment it would be much appreciated.

Actually, I think you can glean all the information you need from the visual clues here. But I’ll elaborate nevertheless.

I mentioned the original two track white label of the Benny Benassi remix of DJ released via D:vision Records in my last item (03.09.2009 NEWS: BENASSI vs BOWIE DJ REMIX DUE PLUS EXCLUSIVE FIRST LOOK) and then Positiva distributed a very limited 4-track DJ only 12″ which included the following:

Extended Version
Planet Funk Remix
Mobbing Remix
Alex Gopher Remix

Next was the 3-track promo 12″, pictured above, the tracklisting of which you should be able to read from the labels.

Finally, there is an 8-track internal use CDR of which you can see the tracklisting below. This 48 minute disc wasn’t distributed publicly, but knowing the collectors among you, I’m sure that won’t hinder you from managing to track a copy down!

And all of this before the commercial release in June!

Bowie Chapter In New Radcliffe Book And More

All the days of my life…

BBC DJ Mark Radcliffe has a new book published through Simon & Schuster in April entitled: Thank You For The Days.

Described as ‘A Boy’s Own adventures in radio and beyond’ the book dedicates a whole chapter to DB with the heading: ‘The day I introduced David Bowie on stage’.

Mark asked David for a little something he could hopefully use in the book and DB responded thus…

“Having read Mark’s chapter on heroes I broke into a small sweat recalling that initially my song ‘Heroes’ had been jokingly titled ‘Herons, a song about birds and fish’. it’s the kind of info you don’t let Mark have. Do steal this book.” – David Bowie

The Daily Mail has published several edited excerpts here and I’ll leave you with the relevant Bowie bit, which is just a taster of the Bowie chapter…

My hero: Mark has worshipped Bowie since his teenage years

The day I told Bowie what to sing

I first saw David Bowie on Top Of The Pops in 1972 doing Starman. To an adolescent grammar school boy, he appeared to have arrived from another planet and it seemed like a world worth visiting.

I bought his album, The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust And The Spiders From Mars, the next day. Putting it on in my bedroom, it became clear from the opening bars of the first track, Five Years, that the future I had been waiting for had arrived.

And then there was the whole image thing. The Bowie look was intoxicatingly daring but presented problems for the pubescent imitator. Even if you were lucky enough to stumble across a Japanese-print jumpsuit in Bolton, you ran the risk of getting a good kicking if you wore it in Yates’s Wine Lodge.

I got to meet Bowie years later and found him incredibly friendly – though heaven knows what he thought of our behaviour when Marc and I compered his gig at Old Trafford cricket ground in 2002.

As 25,000 people waited in the rain for Bowie to appear, Marc and I – much the worse for wear and hardly able to string a sentence together – rambled about on stage for eight minutes.

Looking back, that was seven minutes and 45 seconds longer than we should have been there. We just kept repeating plugs for the show’s sponsor, the Manchester Evening News, and pointing out that the paper now cost just 10p every Friday.

Fortunately, Bowie forgave us because later that year he asked us to introduce him at a gig in London.

Turning up at the stage door, the signs were immediately good – among the signs was one saying ‘Mark and Lard Dressing Room’.

However, before we got to our billet, one of the greatest moments in my life occurred. As we sauntered down a gloomy corridor at the Apollo, we saw before us a figure in a cream-coloured jean jacket. David Bowie.

He greeted us as proper friends, not two drunkards who slurred their way through proceedings at Old Trafford, and invited us into his private dressing room.

In a room containing fresh flowers, lots of fruit and some mid-priced hotel furniture was Marc Riley, me and the biggest rock star in our world.

After a few moments of Bowie’s trademark joshing, he pulled a handwritten list from the pocket of his caramel-coloured trousers. ‘I was thinking of doing this tonight. What do you reckon?’

Stunned, Marc and I cast our eyes down the list, which included Life On Mars, China Girl, Rebel Rebel and Heroes. Then Bowie started to ask us about the running order: should Changes come before Starman or vice versa?

It was one of the moments where life just seemed unreal. Of course we all fantasise about meeting our idols, but to be in the same room, and for him to be genuinely interested in my opinion, was too much to take in.

That night me and Marc introduced David Bowie on stage. We didn’t say anything worth repeating, but we were sober, and we didn’t mention the Manchester Evening News or its cover price.

Thank You For The Days by Mark Radcliffe is published on April 6 by Simon & Schuster.

Two More Tmwfte Paperbacks With Bowie Covers

The solid book we found, can not be wrote today…

Following on from our recent item regarding TMWFTE paperbacks with David Bowie on the cover, (03.17.2009 NEWS: PENGUIN MODERN CLASSICS VERSION OF TMWFTE DUE) BowieNetter Rob ter Stege has kindly sent in details of the above edition following our request for non-English language versions with Bowie covers.

This is a Prisma publication from 1984 with an illustration of T J Newton by Hans Pieko and as lovely as it is I think perhaps Hans’ depiction of the loveable alien is a tad on the stocky side. Anyway, it’s great to see and many thanx to Rob for supplying it.

While trawling recently, I found the above Japanese edition from 2003. It did seem a little out of plaice among all them cods, crabs, seaweed and the like.

So, are there any more out there folx? Come on, there has to be French and Italian versions at least?

Tv On The Radio With Scary Monsters

He opened strange doors that we’d never close again…

I’m sure many of you have already heard this one. But, for those of you that haven’t, Tony Visconti has been in touch with details of a recent interview for SOUNDCHECK which you should listen to at your earliest opportunity.

It’s fascinating stuff, not least of all for before and after snippets of the track Scary Monsters. I think you’ll agree there’s a few subtle variations between the version we know and love and the basic recording that the track started out as.

If you don’t have time to listen online right now, you can download an mp3 of the show from the same page.

Emi To Release Storytellers With Bonus Tracks

Singing old songs we loved…

The David Bowie performance on VH1’s Storytellers from almost ten years ago is due to be released on CD, DVD and Digital formats on July 6th.

Originally taped in front of a small audience of lucky fans and contest winners on August 23rd 1999, the show was primarilly a showcase for a handfull of songs from ‘hours…’ with a couple of handfulls of Bowie classics thrown in.

The eight song broadcast version from October 1999 has long been a favourite among Bowie fans, not only for the great music but also for some hilarious anecdotes between the songs.

However, the good news for us is that the DVD includes four songs not originally aired which are: Survive, I Can’t Read, Always Crashing In The Same Car and If I’m Dreaming My Life.

Here’s the official doo dah from EMI…

David Bowie – VH1 Storytellers CD/DVD and Digital version
Released: 6th July 2009 – EMI

VH1 Storytellers began in 1996 with intimate TV performances by Ray Davies and Elvis Costello. Over the next few years many singer/songwriters appeared on the show, performing in front of a live audience while telling stories of their music and memories. From Garth Brooks to Smashing Pumpkins, many of the most memorable episodes featured British rock acts, and David Bowie appeared on the show on August 23rd 1999.

Bill Flanagan, Executive Producer of the show explains, “We were used to dealing with legendary musicians. Still, landing David Bowie was more than a big booking. There’s no way to say this without being corny: it was an honour. Bowie has a unique place in rock & roll. He is not only one of the most influential musicians of the era, he does nothing unless he is fully committed. He never phones it in.”

He continues, “Bowie’s STORYTELLERS was a unique theatrical event, a sort of off-Broadway “Evening with the Artist” in which a great songwriter used bits and pieces from his life and career to show us all the roads leading up to a single moment, a complement to his current album but also a performance strong enough to stand on its own: a compelling introduction to David Bowie for the uninitiated and a fresh experience for the long time fan.

It was a highlight of the series and a good lesson to those of us behind the camera who sometimes think the artist needs our help. When dealing with an artist of the stature of David Bowie, we can help best by getting out of his way.”

————————————————————————————————————-

As you can see, the four bonus tracks are also available as digital audio but aren’t included on the CD release.

Of the original songs performed, only The Pretty Things Are Going To Hell has never been aired. But, who knows…perhaps it wasn’t even taped.

Stay tuned for a BowieNet contest to win CDs and DVDs ahead of the release in July.
