Untitled Tribute To David Bowie Put Back Three Months

Strange games for May…

We told you very little about this album back in July (07.16.2009 NEWS: UNTITLED TRIBUTE TO DAVID BOWIE DUE NEXT YEAR) and I can’t really see any reason for that lack of new information to change aside from the fact that the Untitled Tribute To David Bowie has been put back to May with the full line-up being announced in January.

Having said that, from what I’ve seen of the line-up so far, it’s definitely going to be worth the wait. Meanwhile, check out the Manimal Vinyl Records label MySpace for a flavour of what they’re about.

Lemon Heroes Signed Copies – Lemonland.net Winners

LEMON in the bag…

LEMON has announced the two winners of their signed copies that they set a contest for back in May. (05.28.2009 NEWS: LEMON HEROES IS OUT NOW – WIN SIGNED COPIES)

For their chance to win, readers had to identify the chrome blob on the left-hand page, above. Not too hard, and it seems two BowieNetters would agree with that as these members were the winners…

Johnnie Seven from Eugene, Oregon and Michael Erla from Wayne, New Jersey.

Well done to the both of you, your signed LEMON “Heroes” should be with you shortly.

The publication also ran a contest to win three copies of Criterion Collection?s DVD issue of The Man Who Fell To Earth. (06.04.2009 NEWS: WIN CRITERION TMWFTE DVDs FROM WORLD ENTERPRISES)

It seems these winners were also BowieNetters and it honestly wasn’t fixed! Here they are just the same…Maarten Kwant from Amsterdam, The Netherlands, Mikael Soderholm of Stockholm, Sweden and Lisa Stanley from Houston, Texas, USA.

These three pointed out an error in an advert in LEMON for www.water.org wherein it was stated that David Bowie plays Walter Tevis in the film!

Check out www.LemonLand.net for more on both these contests and details of recent praise for the LEMON “Heroes” issue in the media.

We will be running our own contest for five signed copies shortly, but with two contests already in progress (10.07.2009 NEWS: ‘hours…’ IS TEN – WIN SIGNED PRESS FOLDER AND PROMO CDs & 10.12.2009 NEWS: SPACE ODDITY 40TH ANNIVERSARY EDITION CDs TO BE WON) and a third about go to live, we thought we’d give it another week or so.

David And Iman Attend 6th Annual Black Ball

For my child and your child too…

David Bowie and Iman are pictured above at the Hammerstein Ballroom during Keep A Child Alive‘s 6th Annual Black Ball hosted by Alicia Keys and Padma Lakshmi on October 15, 2009 in New York City.

The do was populated by many a recognisable visage, including this bunch: Gabriel Aubry, Swizz Beatz, Tyson Beckford, Halle Berry, Mary J. Blige, Sir Richard Branson, Nick Cannon, Stephen Dorff, Estelle, Adrian Grenier, Tommy Hilfiger, Rachel Hunter, Samuel L Jackson, Gayle King, Queen Latifa, Spike Lee, Roland Martin, Londell McMillan, Dee Ocleppo, Tyler Perry, Antonio “L.A.” Reid, Erica Reid, Deborah Roberts, Al Roker, Robin Thicke, Usher and Kerry Washington.

Aside from Alicia Keys, the musical guests for the evening were the African Children’s Choir, Chris Martin of Coldplay, John Mayer and Youssou N’Dour all of whom performed with Alicia as well as doing their own thing.

Iman’s dress for the evening was created by Thai-American designer, Thakoon Panichgul. Bowie was comfortable in his favoured Aquascutum shirt and suit with Yves Saint Laurent pocket handkerchief and boots by Dior.

Chris Martin wore an approximate version of The Thin White Duke, circa The 1976 World Tour…an outfit you can see for yourself on the WireImage.com the WireImage.com Keep A Child Alive’s 6th Annual Black Ball page .

As ever, thanx to Kevin Mazur and WireImage.com for the use of exclusive pictures.

Duffy Talks About Aladdin Sane Shoot On Bbc

Lightning Frightening…

The BBC’s Finlo Rohrer has interviewed photographer Brian Duffy for the BBC News Magazine, ahead of a Duffy retrospective at the Chris Beetles gallery in London which opens to the public today, October 15th.

As you know, Brian is the man responsible for the brilliant photographic images of DB that adorn the Lodger, Scary Monsters and Ashes To Ashes covers…not to mention the image above.

The BBC item first appeared over a week ago. However, I didn’t post it initially as I’m not sure how accurate Duffy’s claims regarding the inspiration for the Aladdin Sane lightning bolt are.

I’m no surer about them now, but here’s what he said either way…

————————————————————————————————————–

Perhaps his best known image remains the cover of the David Bowie album Aladdin Sane. Today, the image might have been produced with a generous sprinkling of Photoshop trickery. Then, everything was a bit more manual.

“Bowie was interested in the Elvis ring which had the letters TCB [taking care of business] as well as a lightning flash.”

It was decided that Bowie would have a flash on his face. Duffy drew inspiration from the mundane objects in his studio and, along with make-up artist Pierre La Roche, copied the red and blue flash off a National Panasonic rice cooker lying nearby.

“I drew on his face the design… [we] used lipstick to fill in the red,” he says.

————————————————————————————————————–

Sadly, I haven’t managed to track down anything resembling the “red and blue flash off a National Panasonic rice cooker”, but if any of you reading this know of it, please let us know.

Duffy famously torched much of his work in 1979…not sure if it was before the Lodger shoot though. If so, then it’s possible that only the Scary Monsters session survives.

If this was the case it goes some way to explaining why we’ve never seen any outtakes from the Aladdin Sane session, aside from one alternate shot on a 1973 tour leaflet.

Fingers crossed that Duffy wasn’t quite mad enough to burn any of his Bowie stuff though.

You can read the full BBC interview here.

Beatles To Bowie Exhibition Opens Thursday

I keep a photograph, It burns my wall with time…

I attended the press preview of Beatles to Bowie: The 60s exposed at the National Portrait Gallery in London earlier today and I’m pretty sure I’ll be going back for a second browse very soon.

We first told you about the exhibition back in June (06.25.2009 NEWS: RARE BOWIE SHOTS AT NPG BEATLES TO BOWIE EXHIBITION) when we exclusively revealed three of the Bowie photographs on display.

By my reckoning, there are at least seven Bowie portraits now, not to mention a few colour magazine spreads with Bowie features from the period…this includes what must be the very first full page colour Bowie pin-up from a September issue of Fabulous 208.

I’ll hopefully reproduce some of those articles here or on the MBs in the not too distant future as I have them all in my own collection.

As you can see from the snap above, the press pack featured Bowie pretty heavily, with the A4+ format folder revealing a David Wedgbury 1966 shot on the inside cover (along with postcard of same) and a colour David Bebbington photo from 1969 on one of the leaflets inside.

I’m hoping to receive a couple of these for a BowieNet contest along with the exhibition catalogue which includes every image in the exhibition as a full-page reproduction. The catalogue is in fact a fully illustrated hardback book by curator Terence Pepper, with an essay by Jon Savage.

Here’s a list of all the Bowie photographers with the corresponding year of the picture on show…

Cyrus Andrews 1965
Fiona Adams 1965
David Wedgbury 1966
Peter Freeman 1967
Dubreq 1969
David Bebbington 1969
Steve Campbell 1970

For those of that can’t wait to either attend or wait for the contest, you can purchase everything Bowie-related from the online NPG store, including the exhibition poster at the top of this item. Follow the links below…

Space Oddity 40th Anniversary Edition Cds Contest

My mother said to get things done, You’d better not mess with Major Tom…

To mark today’s release of the Space Oddity 40th Anniversary Limited Edition CD and digital download in Europe, EMI has kindly donated five of the rather tasty CD packages.

Apart from the fantastic music, (which alone makes this the best repackage of Space Oddity ever released) the booklet contains excellent and informative notes by Bowie expert Kevin Cann, not to mention lots of interesting pictorial stuff.

This is all housed in a beautiful triple digi-pack which, among other things, features reproductions of David’s original roughs for George Underwood‘s The Depth Of The Circle painting that appeared on the back cover of the original album.

In the animation above, I’ve superimposed David’s original drawing with seven of the elements that George recreated from the drawing for the painting.

To be in with a chance of winning one of the CD packages, all you have to do is identify three of those seven elements that were later used again for Bowie-related stuff.

To give you a bit of a clue, one of the elements was used in a press advert for a Bowie single, one was used for an RCA promotional sheet of skin transfers (decals) and the final one was recreated in a Bowie video.

Now all you have to do to be in with a chance of winning the Space Oddity 40th Anniversary Limited Edition CD is email me here with more specific details of how each of the three elements was used.

For example, if you think the element of the two spacemen planting a flower was recreated for the Little Wonder video, then have that as one of the three…though, I can tell you that that isn’t one before you waste your time. I’m generous like that.

As this contest won’t be so easy for everybody, we’re running it until midnight New York time on Sunday October 25th, with the five winners being announced shortly thereafter.

Usual BowieNet rules apply: Only one entry per BowieNet account and please remember you must enter using your BowieNet e-mail or at least supply your BowieNet user name. If you do neither of these things you won’t be eligible to enter.

Happy spotting, kidz!

Ziggy Stardust Cover Becomes First Class British Stamp

I’ll stick with you baby for a thousand years…

Just in time to get a birthday card in the post to David Bowie for his 63rd birthday is the upcoming official stamp of the Ziggy Stardust album cover, which will be issued on January 10th, 2010.

The stamp will be of the first class variety (naturally) and it’s one of ten in a series of classic British album covers. Here’s some blurb…

Design Classics: Classic Album Covers – 7 January 2010

After the success of 2009?s British Design Classics, 2010 opens with a look at the classic art of the album cover. For decades the album sleeve has been the canvas for some of the most imaginative graphic artists in the world. This stamp issue salutes this unique art form and celebrates some of the greatest examples, used by UK artists.

This band of designers and photographers have not only reflected the visual styles of many musical cultures, but have also defined and created them, too. The stamp issue explores some of the most potent graphic images of modern times, many of which have provided a visual soundtrack to people?s lives.

This issue celebrates the work of the album sleeve designer, not the music. Royal Mail began with very extensive research of existing lists and polls of ?Greatest Album Covers? in books, music press and the web. This trawl of literally thousands of albums uncovered many that were common to most lists.

The editors of three of the UK?s most influential music publications together with a number of graphic designers and design writers were asked to independently list the most significant album sleeve artwork used on records by British artists.

Royal Mail reviewed all the research to assemble a shortlist of albums that spanned the decades from the 1960s. Some albums could not be included for operational reasons (for instance, designs that were too dark), after final deliberation the ten albums were arrived at.
