“I found my thrill”

 

To celebrate STUDIOCANAL’s 40th Anniversary 4K release, UMC (Universal Music Catalogue) will be releasing for the very first time in any format, the original movie soundtrack containing music by John Phillips of The Mamas & The Papas fame (who composed specifically for the film), and Stomu Yamash’ta.

 

Back in 1976 when the Pan paperback of the Walter Tevis novel The Man Who Fell To Earth was published, the back cover stated: Album available on RCA.

 

The reason that record never came to be is a whole other story, and one that is covered in the beautiful 48-page hardback book that accompanies this upcoming deluxe double disc release. A double CD is due on September 9th with the deluxe 2CD/2LP box set due November 18th.

 

Fans have attempted to compile their own version of the soundtrack over the years (Hi Bert and Ole), but have never managed to source everything.

 

However, due to the recent discovery of lost master tapes it is now possible to present the original recordings on CD and aforementioned dual format CD/Vinyl Deluxe Box. The box features a reproduction of the original UK poster and a 48-page hardback book with rare photos and a new essay about the film from Paolo Hewitt. The book also contains enlightening notes from the movie’s editor Graeme Clifford who reveals that he used Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of The Moon as a temporary soundtrack whilst working on the film.

 

This UMC version makes available for the first time ever, all of the Stomu Yamash’ta and John Phillips compositions used in The Man Who Fell To Earth, along with many other of John Phillips’ pieces that didn’t make the final cut of the film.

“Bow-wow, woof woof, bow-wow, wow”

 

In the run up to the release of the David Bowie – Who Can I Be Now? (1974 – 1976) box set, we’re running a week by week album focus for the LPs contained within it.

This week we’re looking at Diamond Dogs and today we’re specifically looking at the version of the sleeve that some didn’t want us to see at all.

One of the plaudits received for last year’s Five Years box set was the attention to detail in the reproduction of the album covers. Generally the UK versions were the starting point, but sometimes the American versions of the sleeves had something slightly more desirable going for them.

Diamond Dogs is a case in point, as it was the US version of this particular sleeve which was withdrawn on account of the immodest prominence of the hounds doo dah.

Pictured here are the original sleeve (top) and the new Parlophone reproduction, which favours the same image as the original of the uncensored pooch, before the offending part was airbrushed out.

The sleeve art was created by Guy Peellaert, based on photographs by Terry O’Neill of Bowie’s top half and the lower half of an unnamed canine.

“Bright lights, Soho…”

 

Curzon Soho presents a special screening of The Man Who Fell To Earth on its opening night (September 9th 2016), as part of the #SaveCurzonSoho campaign.

A special guest will introduce the film and DJs will play Bowie and related music in the bar afterwards.

Early birds may wish to join the David Bowie Is Walking in Soho group beforehand.

The walk starts at 4.30pm, to end in time to catch The Man Who Fell To Earth at 6.30pm at Curzon Soho.

The tour is guided by Geoffrey Marsh, Director Of Theatre at the V&A and curator of the record-breaking 2013 David Bowie Is exhibition.

“Believing the strangest things”

 

As we told you last month, to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Nicolas Roeg’s iconic movie, The Man Who Fell To Earth, the film returns in stunning 4K to UK cinemas in September.

STUDIOCANAL announced that the restored version will be released in cinemas nationwide in the UK on 9th September by Park Circus, opening at BFI Southbank and cinemas nationwide.

The Man Who Fell To Earth will also be released on DVD and Blu-ray in the UK on 10th October by STUDIOCANAL and is part of the ‘Vintage Classics collection’ – showcasing iconic British films, all fully restored and featuring brand new extra content.

Tickets for the BFI run go on sale at 11:30 AM on Tuesday, August 9th.

It gives us much pleasure to announce that David Bowie’s ★ album has made the shortlist of twelve 2016 Hyundai Mercury Prize ‘Albums of the Year’.

The shortlist has just been revealed at a live launch by 6 Music’s Shaun Keaveny and live on Lauren Laverne’s show on BBC Radio 6 Music. Shaun said:

 

“Each year the ‘Albums of the Year’ highlight some of the best in British and Irish talent – and 2016 is already shaping up to be a brilliant year for music. It’s going to be a tough decision for the judges, so I’m glad I’m not one of them! I’m really looking forward to finding out this year’s shortlist.”
