Lazarus in at #1 on Official UK Vinyl chart

“I’m so high it makes my brain whirl”

Congratulations are due to Michael C Hall (Newton), Michael Esper (Valentine) and Sophia Anne Caruso (Girl) and the New York cast of the Lazarus Musical, with the news that their Lazarus Cast Album has entered the UK’s Official Vinyl Album Chart at #1 and #10 on the Official Albums Chart Top 100 (includes all formats). The album is also #8 in the Official Physical Albums Chart (doesn’t include digital). (28 October 2016 – 03 November 2016)

We must also congratulate Henry Hey, orchestrator, arranger and musical director for Lazarus, for his brilliant work on these new arrangements of Bowie’s music.

As you know, Donny McCaslin and his band are the musicians behind the sound of David Bowie’s ★ album. They are also the band that played on the four Bowie originals, which appear on the Lazarus Cast Album as an extra disc.

Aside from Lazarus topping the chart, ★ and Hunky Dory remain in the Top 40.

Iman shares STC award with David

“Children round the world, put camel shit on the walls, They’re making carpets on treadmills, or garbage sorting. And it’s no game”

Iman received the Voice Award at the Save the Children 4th annual Illumination Gala in New York on Tuesday (October 25).

In an emotional acceptance speech, she chose to share the award and had this to say regarding David’s charitable work: “My husband, David, was also a staunch supporter of human rights and devoted an innumerable amount of time and resources, which he chose to do anonymously. I share this award with him, knowing that the fire in him lit the fire in me, and vice versa. Good partnerships have a habit of doing that. So while this work is never done, I’m grateful and humbled by this recognition.”

On the red carpet, Iman talked of the importance of Save the Children, beyond the basic needs of food, shelter and education: “When you are a refugee and you are in other places and when you’re in a war torn country, you really are stripped away of your own dignity. So with the Save the Children, that’s what you get. You get your own dignity back.”

View the speech here.

Other attendees included the evening’s host, actress Jennifer Garner, singer Jennifer Nettles and Dakota Fanning who is an artist ambassador for the organization. The annual gala raises money “to give more children a stronger start in life by helping end preventable maternal, newborn and child deaths and by supporting early childhood education.”

David Bowie is pictured here at a press conference prior to his 50th birthday party show: a sold-out concert at Madison Square Garden on January 9th, 1997. The show was filmed for pay-per-view television, with proceeds from both the concert and broadcasts benefiting Save the Children.

Silhouettes and Shadows: Dave Hogan

“See my life in a comic”

Rockarchive, in conjunction with Photofusion, launched Silhouettes and Shadows, a David Bowie photo exhibition in Brixton last month. The exhibition is free, but it closes today (October 26).

Before we miss the opportunity, here’s a final exclusive quotation from one of the photographers taking part.

Here’s Dave Hogan, regarding a little bit of silliness from 1990…

“There is a certain protocol when you work with an artist like David Bowie. You’re not there to be his new best friend, you’re there to record what’s going on. So one time on the Sound and Vision Tour we were travelling across Canada via train, rather than flying which he didn’t like, and he came and sat next to me. This put me into a state of panic because I didn’t want everybody to think I was trying to be too forward being the new guy on tour.

But it turned out the reason he came to sit next to me was because I was reading Viz. He’d heard of this new adult comic and wanted my copy to read. When my photo appeared in the papers of him reading Viz, they gave him a spoof Bowie column in the next magazine.” – Dave Hogan

Bowie and Viz in Manchester 2002

“See my life in a comic…part 382”

Following Dave Hogan’s picture of David Bowie reading Viz in 1990 that we posted earlier, here’s another shot to prove what a loyal reader David was, taken twelve years later in 2002.

The occasion was Bowie’s visit to Manchester to play the Move festival. While in town he popped into Radio 1 for an interview and bit of a lark around with Mark Radcliffe and Marc Riley.

As usual, Riley is acting the goat (or more accurately, a clown), but even his antics couldn’t distract Bowie from Viz.

As ever, there’s a limited edition version designed for the Japanese market which includes a few desirable extras. Here’s the description from a popular Japanese CD site:

Reminder: Jeremy Vine first play of No Plan

“I’m lost, In streams of sound”

Following the Shaun Keaveny show’s world exclusive first play of When I Met You on BBC Radio 6 Music this morning (http://smarturl.it/6MusicBrekky), here’s a quick reminder that No Plan has its exclusive first play on BBC Radio 2’s the Jeremy Vine show, which starts at midday.

BBC radio shows can be heard again via the BBC iPlayer.

Shaun Keaveny was so enamoured with When I Met You this morning that he played it again towards the end of the show. BBC Radio 6 Music will now be playing the track throughout the day. Indeed, it’s just been included on Lauren Laverne’s Just Added playlist.

The Lazarus Cast Album is due for release on Friday (October 21), four days before previews for the Lazarus Musical start in London.
