David Bowie will this week launch a surprise bid to steal Charles Saatchi’s crown as the art king of County Hall.
The superstar’s foundation, Bowieart, is to fund a series of major exhibitions of contemporary art over the next three years – and the first opens this Thursday. The shows, entitled Bloc, will be held in the County Hall Gallery underneath The Saatchi Gallery.
The first will present the work of 16 young artists including Doug Fishbone, famous for installing 30,000 bananas in Trafalgar Square, and Eleonora Aguiari who wrapped a statue of Lord Napier in red tape.
Beth Greenacre, who curates Bowie’s art collection and is the director of Bowieart, told the Standard: “David knows the work of all the artists. He has worked very closely with us. Bloc presents the works of tomorrow’s stars.”
